Continental vs Cobra

Recommended Posts

So I just purchased a 00 Continental. One of the things that drew me to it (aside from the price) was that it had the 4V 4.6. I noticed though that it was only rated at 275 hp while the Marauder and Cobra had over 300. Does anyone know what is different in the engines that accounted for the other 25+ HP? Is it just a simple tune or is there more to it? Im not looking to make crazy power or anything, but if I could make 300hp relatively easily without sacrificing much in the way of reliability then Im about it.

The biggest difference is it’s mounted sideways and uses a different tranny.

They are detuned because they are FWD. Too much power going to the front wheels will cause torque steer. Also mentioned the transmission probably couldn't handle that much more power.

I'll chime in with some limited tech, having owned both.  In case anyone bumps into this thread looking for swap info (Cobra motor, cheap!), the fwd 4-valve has different rear flange bosses drilled.  Also, the crankshaft is basically the GT version (not forged), good news there is it should be able to bolt up a GT flywheel and clutch, this should enable a SHO MTX to mate up, thought about that for a while but never actually tried it and now my dear Gen 9 Conti's are gone.  Still have a rusted SHO with a Quaiffed (and purportedly cryo'ed) 5-speed if someone wanted to try (North Central MA).

Power difference comes from the 98 Cobra style 2-stage induction and a much more limited exhaust, tune too I would expect.

I  found the weak point in the Gen 9's to be the AX4NS trans, which (for me at least) develop inside axle bearing problems.  I really liked those cars as they sat, more power always sounds great but would torch even more fuel.

Cheers,

- Jeff
