In todays business announcement, Mulally referred to the new B car as Fiesta. Sorry.

i started reading this thread a little whila ago and read the whole thing. i though fiesta is a stupid name. i likes escort better and could not think of a name on my own. verve is just plain stupid and sounds lame. after following a few links i looked up pics of the last few fiestas from around the globe. the name fits the car pretty well. the only name that i can think of that might (only might) have been better is the flex which is already taken for the vehicle that should have been named the fairlane.

A few people have said they don't like the Fiesta name on BON, if Ford bring the European Fiesta Stateside now then maybe Ford might reconsider the name Escort or Fairlane for the American Fiesta as it looks more like the old Escort than the current/new European Fiesta, you never know they might change it might be a good idea.

I had an '84 Escort that my father owned and then it went to my brother (both of whom are not particualr about maintenance and then to me. It went through a few timing belts and water pumps while I had it. In 2003 I sold it to a junk yard, not because it was not running, but I wanted a new F-150. It had over 190,000 miles on it without ever taking off the head.

Yeah, Escort would be a good name for this new car.

Ugh. I have nothing but cursed memories of the Escort. As do most Americans around my age. On the other hand, most people in the market for a B-car probably don't even remember the last Fiesta that was sold here.

LOL cursed memories Nick what were they?

It's easy to understand you only got the FWD version in the States, a lot of folk cursed Ford here for changing from what was a superb first class RWD car to a heep of FWD junk, l know all about the FWD "Escort Curse".

It wasn't just that it was FWD. Our Escort pretty much had nothing in common with yours for much of the 2nd half of its life. My perception of the Escort sold here was cheap-piece-of-trash-reskinned-cheaper-piece-of-trash-Mazda. I have no fond memories of the Escort at all. Fiesta was well before my time the last time it was sold in the US. If I were not a Ford enthusiast, I wouldn't know the damnedest thing about them.

Just to have it noted the 81-90 escorts were some of the best cars built, my 89 lasted past 150000 miles

In your opinion. My friend's sister across the street had one of those when I was little. I thought it was a heap of crap too.

Ford's Fiesta when it was launched back in 70's was percieved as the perfect Grandads car in Fords range at the time, it was a boring league of it's own the rest of Fords range at the time was simply brilliant l would have brought any car Ford made at the time everything was just so right, it's odd how things change Nick the new Fiesta is going to become FOE most exciting car its had for decades l don't know where Ford suddenly got the urge to build super boring cars for its customers in Europe. Yes l agree with you all those FWD Escorts looked like a cheap-piece-of-trash they put me right off Fords at the time.

You can't beat the old skool kool RWD Escorts they were among some the best cars Ford ever made.

I loved my 83 Escort that had EFI and a 5-speed. The only thing I didn't like about it were the TRX tires. After four years, I needed new ones and that size wasn't available. I didn't want to buy new wheels AND tires. I ended up ordering a new 87 Turbo Coupe.

I remember the Fiesta being a decent car for the few years it was available here in the States.

I think the biggest complaint here about Fiesta is that it sounds too close to Festiva, which was indeed a steaming pile. However, I barely even remember those either. Anyone under the age of 30 likely has little or no memory of either car.

No doubt you will be able to bore folk about how good Ford was in 2008 in 20 years time then Nick, you can get your own back then :hysterical:

I can just see them laughing at us, you used to drive all the way to a Shell garage to fill up your car up with smelly inflammable liquids.

Gee that must of been a risky thing to do.

Something tells me it'll be far more than 20 years before the age of gasoline ends. Even if new vehicles find some newfangled method of fueling themselves, all of the old cars aren't going to disappear.

There will still be gas stations for the next 200 years on some level.

Yeah, I think in "83 they relieved the pistons so that they did not bend the valves if the timing belt broke. My used "84 served me well.

I personally think they should keep the "VERVE" name. It's new, it's catchy, it's FORWARD, not a recall of a name from the past. Using the Escort name (while well known and fairly respected) this will be a totally new car and therefore to me deserves a new name. And it would be nice if Ford broke away from the whole "F" nomenclature once in a while.

The only place it's a brand new car though is USA and Canada. Everywhere else it's a redesign of an existing car. Why re-invent the wheel?

I'll share my Fiesta / Escort experiences...

Fiesta:

My 1st year of college I had an 85 Toyota 4-Runner that was fuel injected (22RE motor) with 4x4 and a 5 speed. Driving on rt 68 in Maryland I cut off a Ford Fiesta pretty bad to keep my momentum going. I hit the bottom of that hill, banged 4th and kept it planted to the floor because I knew I would be at 45mph by the time I got to the top. Anyway, the Fiesta driver got pissed and caught up to me. The women that was driving it was easily 375 pounds...believe it or not the Fiesta held her girth. She flipped me the bird, moved her oak tree arm...down shifted and flat blew my doors off going up the hill.

Escort:

My ex wife's 1994 Escort was purchased used with 65,000 miles while she was in school for $5,000. Ran like a champ. I replaced an alternator, water pump, timing belt, and typical replacement parts. the car never left us stranded except for a dead battery. Ran flawlessly in WV and NJ, and got an easy 35mpg. We sold it with 160,000 miles on it and got $1750 for it. How can you complain about that?

In summary..."Shamu" in Fiesta blew my doors off...Escort gave me over 100,000miles and only cost me a little more than 3 grand.

Ford need to bring back the smaller fuel efficent to it's line up and not bother with cars like another big obese overweight Taurus that does not sell well and just become a dinosaur that will get killed off anyway.

Escort is Fords best selling car of all time and 20 MILLION buyer can't all be wrong.

:blah:

Again I'll point to VW's Bug. It's their best-seller of all-time too. Should they quit making everything else they are making and instead revert back to craptastic Bug production?

You will have Deanh and all the Herbies fans after you now Nick, l like the the old classic bug rather than the new jelly bug but Hiltlers 1938 Peasant-Wagon had 3 decade head start on the the Classic 1968 Mk1 Escort, when production of the Escort finished in 2003 it outsold the bug even though the bug had 35 years more time in the market place so the 20 Million Escorts was massive success for Ford no other Ford car has sold as well. :happy feet:

Good for the Escort. It's still a silly name for a car, no matter how well it sold worldwide. Maybe the word "escort" doesn't have the same meaning elsewhere as it does in the U.S.

I remember when I was young, a neighbor across the street had an Escort. It was an ugly, unreliable piece of crap. I certainly have no fond memories of them.
