It's not a racist comment, it's a fact. It's actually known as "white flight". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_flight

Most of the cities listed as having severe cases are in similar shape to Detroit. They also have VERY high crime rates and unemployment. Detroit was a great city prior to the 60s/70s.

I wouldn't refer to it as "white flight" so much as "educated flight". It just so happens that more white people are educated.

One research university eh? Which one might that be?

Probably the one with huge research facilities that is ranked nationally in the top 10 of all schools and top 3 of public universities in almost every academic division other than English/Psych/Soci/etc.

Detroit doesn't have to be a major player on a national level to become successful to start, all it takes is a little ingenuity and right time right place scenarios. Major global cities did not establish themselves overnight.

Detroit is completely irrelevant because it has nothing to offer on a state let alone national or global level. What could put Detroit to a level near NYC/London/Paris/Berlin/Moscow/Tokyo? Hell, it's no where near Atlanta. Detroit was great when manufacturing required shipping raw materials and finished products along the great lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. Now that doesn't really happen much.

I also LOVE how you have dumbed down your argument to how people dress and act. I mean seriously if you aren't beating around the bush about stereotypes, then where are you going with that statement? There are PLENTY of professionals within the city limits and surrounding suburbs.

I'm pretty sure Mississippi and West Virginia don't have financial centers either.

http://www.inc.com/bestcities/2005/best.ht...0&year=2005

But Detroit (213th btw) did manage to beat Philly. And since those ratings are 3 years ago and doing business in Michigan and Detroit has only gotten worse...

Oh and your death warrant thing, just goes to prove that you have some sort of ill conceived notion about what the city is and what it stands for. Seriously, you really need to open your eyes and be a bit more reaonsable.

Umm, Detroit bringing in Casinos isn't going to make it a success. I lived in Oakland county for 22 years, I'm pretty sure I can accurately state Detroit is run by criminals and has been failing for years. Denial does not make something go away.

But tell me, what is Detroit and what does it stand for?

Umm..the Ford family...not Ford Motor Company.

William Clay Ford (Bill's dad) owns the team. But turns out, he owns Ford Motor Company too. You should know how Ford stock is setup that the family controls the company. William Clay was as successful with the Lions as Billy was FMC.

Mmmmmkay. Last I checked, Ford's CEO was Alan Mullaly, not "The Ford Family Shareholders".

He's been there less than a year. And he might be the CEO, but the Ford family could oust him at anytime. Don't get me wrong, he'll save the company if he's not interfered with. The Ford family also ignored everything Nasser did while he reaped record profits that were completely unsustainable.

Bad football teams?

Actually the Lions are 3-1 this season.......

In all seriousness......

Where did I mention anything about Casinos? I know damn'd well that those are not going to fill the void that the once prevelant and powerful US Auto industry once dominated. So that argument is null and void.

Seriously what gives with you and this top 10 schools bull? Do you realize how many tech savy, business savy or plain savy individuals did not attend a tier 1 top 10 school? WSU/DMC has a some very stellar medical research facilities, MTech offers up quite a few technical degrees producing talent, WMU is one of the largest aviation schools in the country.......need I go on.

I realize Detroit isn't a worldclass city. I understand there needs to be some sort of synergy amongst the metro area (hell Oakland Co can't even cooperate with Macomb Co). What does living in Oakland County for 22 years validate? Were you actively a part of city/county/state development?

Oh and the INC listing sort of contradicts your statements about major top tier universities. The cities containing Penn State University and University of Illinois were listed below Detroit. Then you have San Jose, a city that has grown by leaps and bounds and happens to be situated smack dab in the middle of Silicon Valley, faired no better. To top it all off you have Reno, NV listed as No.1. What is that city known for again?

Yes, crappy old Detroit. The city that continues to find takers of new homes built within the city limits. A city that has issued more single and multi-family home permits than any other city in the Metro Detroit area. It may not be a Toyko, Moscow, NY or the like but it is far from being the dump that many that haven't a clue make it out to be.

You didn't mention casinos. I was illustrating that Detroit put in all this effort into getting them but the reality is they just make the individuals in the city poorer in exchange for tax money and jobs. It's a net gain to the owners of the casino at a loss to the city.

Those schools aren't even top 100. My argument was that top tech firms recruit only top 100 schools. It's just a fact that the average decision maker (like the CEO that is going to pick a place to invest) went to a top school. Fair or not, it's how the world is. Mullaly and Bill Ford Jr both have degrees from MIT. Did you just read about a Ford partnership with MIT? Yes, you may have. I didn't see a Ford partnership with Michigan Tech did I? (One of my best friends goes to MTech, he has very limited options outside of Michigan auto suppliers and other small companies just because of where his degree is from).

Just that I lived outside Detroit. No more, no less.

I didn't actually compile the list. It's best places to do business. On the whole business growth is in areas near major universities or is able to recruit from them. Btw, Reno is growing, Detroit is not.

Hey I really don't think the football season can get any worse for me. U of M is crap and PSU hasn't lived up to much of nothing......at least I have the Lions to fall back on (hopefully).

UM will win the Big Ten. Then Lloyd will quit and we'll get Les Miles finally.

Hell of a place to live.

Now because I'm lazy and I don't feel like doing the research. I strongly suggest you look down the list of CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and then get back to me and let me know which ones graduated from a Top Tier school.

A degree from Harvard, MIT, University of Michigan doesn't mean a dam thing if it can not be applied. Ford's backward ass hiring process, picking the brightest and best from the best schools, has often back fired on them.

Reno can't be growing that fast, especially considering the fact that it happens to be one of the most overvalued real estate markets in the country. BTW, I know you didn't come up with the list it was rather obvious that INC did. It was a rhetorical question on my part.

More magazine links huh? Then you surmise that it is one hell of a place to live, without having any recent first hand and personal experience? I always love how people base their opinions on a one sided argument. Good for you, like most Americans, paint half a picture and then walk around giving a damn about completing the whole thing.

And FWIW, I never paraded the city around as a mecca of all that is perfect in the world. I just know for a fact that it aint all you are trying to crack it up to be.

When it comes to hockey, I'm just entirely indifferent. I don't think I noticed the year they were on strike until about 2/3 of the way through the season.

I couldn't have been happier. I Canada hockey is everything, and it preempts the news on CBC. Hockey is fine, just don't make me watch it. I know I'm weird, but politics is the sport I'm more interested in.

I'll do the first 100 to prove you wrong.

A degree from Harvard, MIT, University of Michigan doesn't mean a dam thing if it can not be applied. Ford's backward ass hiring process, picking the brightest and best from the best schools, has often back fired on them.

Or, they were smothered and couldn't do anything due to the Ford culture. That same culture didn't change until an outsider came in.

Reno can't be growing that fast, especially considering the fact that it happens to be one of the most overvalued real estate markets in the country. BTW, I know you didn't come up with the list it was rather obvious that INC did. It was a rhetorical question on my part.

It might not be growing fast, but it's not shrinking. The point was people might actually start new business there, unlike Detroit.

Did you miss the part where I lived 40 minutes outside Detroit for 22 years?

And FWIW, I never paraded the city around as a mecca of all that is perfect in the world. I just know for a fact that it aint all you are trying to crack it up to be.

Pretty sure it is exactly that.
