Ford Fiesta Econetic gets top 5 star rating from Auto Express

double edged sword...what is worse...70 odd MPG"S and less dependency on foreign oil AND using a lot less...or a few more particulates and slightly dirtier emissions?????

In terms of air that can be cut with knife and fork, definitely worse to loosen NOx and PM restrictions.

If CARB rolled back NOx & PM restrictions 10 years and subsequently 60% of new California fleet purchases were diesels, it would have a definite effect on air quality. And a greater and greater effect as subsequent years compounded the effect.

You would begin to see, in effect, cleaner gas engined vehicles traded in for dirtier diesels.

and what people do not take into account and constantly bash California about, is the car per capita is higher here than pretty much ANYWHERE in the country...we also have the largest car market...ie buyers....so, continue bashing. but if they did NOT reign in emmisions then this place would get ugly FAST!...sorry Rich, kinda used my double sided question as a set up....do you feel cheap....

Yes, yes, yes, I've seen it all before. "California is the world's fifth largest economy", "California is the largest car market." blah blah blah. I've also seen your governor's press conferences with the backdrop stolen from the White House.

California also consistently has a net loss of 'native sons', so the place ain't all it's cracked up to be.

basher.....love the place, but point is unfortunately, with the numbers and the size of the market, for good or bad.....can you say leverage when it comes to decision making?....

GM, Ford, and Chrysler all created working concept vehicles of 5 passenger famly cars. GM created the 80 mpg Precept, Ford created the 78 mpg Prodigy, and Chrysler created the 78 mpg ESX-3 in the late 90's what happened to them?

Would a Fiesta hybrid/diesel help with strict emission regulations?

No............... damn you short sighted Californians, who want to punish auto / truck / big truck owners, while looking the other way at your own pollution spewing business's. You want automakers, and trucking companies, to pay thousands after thousands, for diminishing returns on auto emissions................. and will then bitch and whine when your goods cost alot more than the rest of ours.

Damn you, for using hocus pocus statistics, and science, that other states will follow, like sheep to slaughter.

Damn you, for making it almost impossible for some industries to do business in your state................. yet being so arrogant and self important, that you think they will do it anyway................. because your sorry ass's, that live in a climate that couldn't have clean air IF THERE WAS NOT ONE CAR ON ANY ROAD, think you can have it all.

Explain to the trucking industry, how you are expecting them to stay in business, while only allowing them to have trucks that are a few years old (do you have any idea what a big truck costs??)............... or forcing companies with older trucks to retrofit current (new and more restrictive) emissions equipment on them, which will cost these companies 10's of thousands PER TRUCK. Already, my husband gets to freeze, or boil, if he is unlucky enough to have to haul propane into CA................ because it is illegal for him to idle his truck. Yet, he is bringing in propane, because CA just so happens to be out, at their own refineries.................. and is doing so so you can keep your ass's warm.

I hope that you do put all of these proposed regulations in place. Then, I hope that every trucking company just drops trailers at the border, so CA trucking companies (those that are still in business after paying 100's of thousands or millions of dollars to continue doing business in your state) can pick them all up, and deliver them. Oh................. and forget propane from AZ or CO, or NM................. the companies that haul that OWN their trailers, and aren't about to drop them.

Then, you can all sit and wonder, and whine about why everything in your state costs 2-3x what it does everywhere else................. while you sit looking at all of the smoke and pollution still spewing from smoke stacks, all over the state.

[rant off]

Sorry, but I am sick of the "only we get that it would be nice to be able to breath," and noone else is nearly as aware, or green, as we are................ BS. The LA basin is doomed to have hideous pollution, as long as people live there. It is because of the ocean, the ocean breezes, and the topography. I guess this is the price to pay, to live in paradise.

I get the hate from the trucking side of it. My father is a retired long-haul truck driver back east, and still keeps his nose in the industry.

As far as your propane keeping our asses warm, I appreciate it. Just the way you appreciate all of the innovations that originated here, and the money from here that puts food on the table, right?

What some people need to realize is that people are tired of getting raped at the pump. I want fuel efficient vehicles. Others do too. I want more restrictions on emissions. Global warming may be happening, but I'm not convinced we are responsible for it. Yes, the auto industry gets a disproportional amount of shit for global warming. I get that, and yes it's unfair. At the end of the day, these restrictions reduce the amount of pollution, and I am for that here, and every other state in the country. For me, personally, that's a good thing. I'd like to see American innovation applied to something other than defense spending. I'll say it again, we put a man on the moon how many years ago, and can't create anything more than the poorly efficient internal combustion engine? I would like to have less polluting vehicles. I am no legislator, I have no idea on HOW that should be accomplished in the proper economic way. But I know it will happen.

I prefer to breath clean air. It's similar to the way I feel about smokers. I don't care if someone smokes, just so long as I have the choice of not being around them. In my view, they are killing themselves, and that's fine with me. One less person that obviously doesn't care about themselves, or other people. No big deal. If I was forced to live my life confined to the same room as a habitual smoker, I'm going to prefer he smoke less, or not at all. Same principle.

I'll admit, I am pro environment - because those are the resources that are important to me...the main reason I moved here years ago. It sure wasn't the people. If more people in this country got of their fat assess (what is the obesity rate in this country again?) and enjoyed the outdoors, they would want it too. I live right across the street from the ocean, the desert is forty five minutes away, and the mountains are two hours away. As an outdoors enthusiast, I like that. And that is a fairly unique environment in this country. Not paradise, but quite unique. If you don't like the state, don't come there. Those of us that do enjoy it, certainly don't want you here. I'll be here another few years, then I will move on. Until then I'll enjoy everything this state has to offer, and enjoy my time.

I listen to all the rants about how people hate CA on this board. Mostly from people that have never lived here, and I find that hilarious...as I'm sure others do.

We listened, and booted his ass out of office. After all, he did such a great job with the economy and interest rates, didn't he? :ohsnap:

You're right in that respect, Carter didn't do well with the economy/interest rates. That doesn't make him wrong on other issues however.

So what did your resume say?

"Can play George Armstrong Custer, in a pinch"?

Actually, I'm non-union and part time (full time engineer). My nickname while working on Dr. Quinn was "Custer". When they actually had a SAG actor play General Custer on the show, I was banned because I looked more like Custer than he did.

Think being green means you have to make compromises? Well, the latest Ford Fiesta aims to change your mind.

I am concerned that there are two areas that Ford seems to be missing:

1. A uniquely styled, high volume hybrid like Prius and Insight.

2. A fuel economy "flier" like this Fiesta.

I can't tell you how many posts on different forums I read here where people are accusing Ford and GM (in a conspiracy of course) of holding out on cars that are made in Europe but could be sold here. I know it would be expensive to certify. VW made do without urea injection on their diesels, but they likely did a lot of head, EGR, particulate trap, and catalyst development. And, since the Ford US has made the decision to forgo diesels at this point in favor of gas EB, this would have to be a unique effort which would be very expensive on a per-unit basis. But this is one area where the financials probably don't tell the whole story.

It would be great if, just once, Ford had the highest fuel economy car in the country. But...that's going to be clouded and potentially overshadowed when PHEV's come on stream with bragging points of 75 or 100+ mpg.

1) They get a break on PM because PM filters sap fuel economy (you have to push the exhaust gas through them)

2) NOx mitigation is horribly expensive, and (again) saps fuel economy

The smaller engines are able to do NOx emissions simply with EGR, but the end result is the seriously poor fuel economy of the US spec Jetta vs. the EU spec model.

I don't hate California, but I hate distorted facts that are used to promote California (e.g. "World's fifth largest economy"). That line of reasoning is just about as stupid as the line of reasoning that claimed the Dakotas held the world's third largest stockpile of nuclear weapons during the Minuteman/SAC era.

As to the outdoors--to each his own, I guess. I've been a fan of the great plains and Missouri Valley my whole life, so California's beaches, mountains, and desert are only interesting as 'something new to see'.

This is such epic bs. If you replace every 4 door sedan in california that was built before 1995 with a 2009 econetic fiesta there would be much, much much less pollution than today, in every single category (nox, part, "Co2"). Compare the emissions to a 95 Malibu, or an Escort, or whatever. You want less pollution? A cleaner planet? Build cars that last 5 years longer than they do today. That's a diesel. It isn't a battery, and it damn sure isn't a tiny gas engine with a turbocharger.

My husband lived in CA most of his life. He moved out in '93, as he was sick of the regulations/govt sticks its nose in every part of your business/money grab/ pollution/people. He never looked back.

My parents lived in Anaheim after I was born. When I was 3, they decided that this was not the place they wanted to raise a child, and moved to AZ.

I also love the outdoors. This is why I live in a place where 4' chainlink fences are common................. so you can see your neighbors, and the great outdoors. The National Forest is appx 200 feet away from my lot line. I can drive for 40 minutes, and go to one of the largest lakes in the state, to boat or bass/crappie/trout fish................ and this is in the Sonoran desert. I can drive appx 1 hour NE from my house, and have my choice of 5+ trout lakes, at 7000+ ft, in the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in the world. I can drive for 2-2.5 hours, and be at 8500ft, and be in a Spruce/Fir/Aspen forest.................. and go ice fishing if I desire. Often, we will have the hottest place in the nation, in Gila Bend................ and the coldest, at Hawley Lake, on the same day. If I want to go to the dunes, that is to the SW.

The only thing I don't have, is the ocean.

See, our hobbies are the outdoors, cars/trucks, and guns. All of these things are severely regulated/taxed/fined/user feed in CA. When I go camping............... I don't want to see another person, and I don't have to make reservations months in advance.

I'm glad you like where you live, as you should. Just understand that others do not feel the same. In the case of CA, it is alot of people................ as we are about overrun, here in AZ, by those who are fleeing CA en mass. They too, are tired of the rule/tax/entitlement/liberalism that has overrun the state.

See, I don't hate CA................... it is a nice place to visit every 2-3 years (Disneyland, Sea World), and there are even places that I really like, like Bishop, and June Lake. Unfortunately, those nice places are in CA (most there wish they weren't). I just don't like having CA's politics forced on me, as if they are the barometer of the entire nation.

I understand your position.

And believe me, I understand what you mean as far as getting away from people. I like camping/hiking solo, and out here to get to the good spots you literally have to 4x4 out a distance (where you can even do that), then go hiking from there. That's usually the only way I don't run into people (which I too, prefer.) People ask me if I get scared camping alone. The only thing that scares me out in a remote area is running into another person. There are too many wanna-bees out here with something to prove.

I've heard of the Arizona migrations, too. The same thing has also happened in Oregon a few years back. My goal is to save, save, save, and buy a couple hundred acres in Montana eventually. By the time I can do that, there may well be CA people by then, too.

I also agree CA is no place to raise children. There is far too much emphasis on materialism out here.

My next stop is Texas. I liked it out there, and the people were cool. I did DFW in 05, and now I want to try a run in Austin.

Just so your error is clear; my post didn't refer to a Fusion. The vehicles being taken off the streets and replaced by new cars sold (or, if not taken off the streets for good, then at least hauled to the portion of Mexico south of San Diego, as the case may be) aren't Fusions; they're the 12-20 year old clunkers. Either the Fusion or Econetic Fiesta will decrease emissions. To assert that a 5-15% mix of new vehicle sales with Econetic diesels (1.2-2.0L) will make the air "thick enough to be cut with a knife" is a ridiculous, childish, inaccurate statement.

Oh btw, if your concern is for your fellow man and nox emissions, why aren't you campaigning that Ford needs to take drastic immediate action on the diesel F-series products? And what about all of the damage these hybrids do to the environment both in extraction of the raw materials, increased power transmission requirements (when they're inevitably made plug in), and at mid/end of life when these wonderful batteries have to be cleaned up/recycled/re-used/plowed in to the earth somewhere?

For BON forums, F-NA products and styling are sacred cows. The orthodoxy must be adhered to.

Do you really think people who are driving 12-20 year old clunkers are going to be able to afford new Econetic Fiestas? Or that they'd even want one if they could?
