Day Time Running Lights (DRL) for USA Ford Vehicles

All I am saying is that other countries regs. do not work in the USA. Neither does socialized health care or higher taxes. And yes I am a member of the Tea Party. I believe in freedom.

P.S. Since you are in Florida, please don't screw up the election. We had enough with Miami-Dade in 2000 and BHO for 4 years.

Go Figure....huh? If I could only bet a Greyhound like I can pick out a "Teabagger". You and the rest of Fox News Network and Shawn Hannity addicts don`t want (Socialized Health Care). What the hell do you think Medicare is when you collect Social Security? Going to refuse yours when you reach retirement age? Who you think pays (now) for the uninsured when they show up at the hospital ER? Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy? Medicaid picks up the tab for the un-insured! Joe Six-pac and your friend Joe the Plumber who were the last of the so called working middle class or now known as the "working poor" earn too much to qualify for Medicaid and are not (old) enough to qualify for Medicare! Those hospital and doctor bills for the un-insured are being paid for by you, me, and the rest of the US Tax Payers! There`s no Free Lunch! Like the man from" Fram" used to say, you can pay me now, or you`ll pay me later! Stop worrying about Socialism. Canada is a pretty happy and Free Nation. Joe MC Carthy has been dead for decades already. Stop the Commie witch hunt and there`s a Red under every bed!

PS. If Marco Rubio wins the Senate seat and Bill McCullum wins the Governorship, Florida will become a third world Nation and become the new Haiti of the western hemisphere. Fortunately for me, I live in Monroe County in the Florida Keys and share NOTHING in common with the rest of the State except sales tax and license plates.

PSS Higher taxes? All Tax rates including those of the ultra rich have either stayed the same or actually gone DOWN since Obama took office. Stop listening to the Wacko`s on Fox News! Otherwise, take your Zanex as prescribed!

I`ll end this political rant immediately! Wow, all over an attempt to get some uniformity on DRL regulations! Opps, did it again, Tea Party (I`m originally from Massachusetts) think I know a bit about The Original Tea Party, or Teabaggers HATE the word Regulation. Think I`ll slash my seat and shoulder belts in protest! I hate air-bags too!

I just want to make sure what's mine stays mine. The Govt. should not redistribute wealth, and as far as social security goes, I believe that it should be optional. If I can do better on my own, why shouldn't I. Nobdy is paying for me, and I don't want to pay for anybody else.

P.s. Tell Harry and Nancy I said "Hi"

Always amusing to read American opposition to common sense that the rest of the civilized world has implemented many years ago. Like the metric system and daytime running lights...

But inevitably the US will one day have both. And with respect to DRL, one can only hope that TAIL-LIGHTS <on> will be a part of it! In visibility limited daytime divided highway driving, it is at least as important to be able to see the tail-lights of the vehicle in front of you as it is to see the headlights of the vehicle behind you.

And therein lies my opposition to the current hair-brained DRL systems that automakers are currently using in the U.S. As far as I know, NONE of them include any rear marker lights as part of the package, which goes against all common sense entirely. It's not that they exist. It's that they exist incorrectly or ineffectively, whether it be an American, German, or Japanese vehicle.

So take your "American opposition to common sense" quip and...well...do something metric with it.

Correct me if I`m mistaken, but was that a "Teabag" that you were attempting to drop in his (cup)? Let me either prepare some boiling water or ice cubes depending if your prefer your beverage served Hot or Cold! I`m so amused how protective (some) US citizens are of their sovereignty! Our friendly neighbors to the North, Canada have absolutely no interest in taking over and adopting US behavior or law. Although we all occupy what is commonly known as North America, we are in fact two Very different nations. I`d also include Mexico into this conversation but realize that would throw some "Teabaggers" into a complete fit considering that they too are part of North America. Chill out, know one is going to take away your guns or your stars and stripes! Imagine, most of Ford`s Fusion`s and Fiesta`s are being assembled with folks that probably can`t speak a word of English, yet the fit and finish of Mexican built vehicles are among Ford`s best! Si!

Umm. No. I'm not a Republican. I've never attended a "Teabag" rally. I'm just stating that regulations shouldn't exist unless they exude some sort of common sense. And a DRL regulation that doesn't include some sort of rear market lights in the equation makes no sense at all. Refer to my earlier posts in this thread instead of assuming I'm some sort of gun-toting hillbilly teabagger like the previous poster who disagreed with you.

Thanks.

Yes my Milan was built in Mexico, and just as long as they didn't turn on the DRL I am fine with that.

As far as turning American in to some global country. Forget it. It does not nor will never work. If certian people would like metrics and social healthcare, there are plenty of countries that already offer that plus wealth redistribution, and DRL's. Those people should move there and take the current US government along to better govern them..

Thank you

In that case, why not just turn the low beams on? Or the fog/driving lamps?

THANK YOU FORD for not forcing DRLs on your U.S. spec vehicles!

I think it would be far more useful to mandate automatic lights that turn on when the wipers are on. I can see cars on a dry day just fine without lights on but there are so many idiots out there who drive on dark rainy days with no lights, even though the law says lights on when raining. The worst part is you flash them to let them know to turn on their lights and they still don't. Hello Captain Oblivious!

Now that I can agree with. I don't know of any states where it is actually even legal to continuously operate the wipers without the headlights also being on. I know it's illegal here in MD, yet I see people do it all the time. Rather moronic.

Now one other thing that kind of bothers me: Automatic headlights. So many of them are too uber-sensitive that they turn on just from driving under an overpass only to turn off again 10 seconds later. That can't be good for bulb life.

Dear Humble,

I apologize for my assumptions! This whole subject was just my curiosity of why the NHTSA has yet to take a stand one way or the other on the DRL issue. I just think regardless of where you find yourself on whether or not there is (any) safety improvement achieved.....why not at least have some uniformity? Its not like having a rubber trim strip on a cars door to prevent parking lot dings. The Federal agency should finally either eliminate DRL`s after a certain date for USA vehicles (or) have Ford,Chrysler, and Nissan the only 3 holdouts I can think of, join the rest of the auto and truck world and as in "Genesis" Let there Be Light!

I don't really see any harm with the current regulations. Those areas that are prone to visibility issues already often have "headlights on" signs. I don't see the need for anything beyond that. If automakers want to equip their vehicles with DRL's, let them. If they don't want to, fine. It wouldn't ruin my day if the government decided to mandate them, but I don't think it's really a major issue that's on their radar at this time. As was recently mentioned, I would much rather they take up regulations mandating automatic headlights when the wipers are on. That's probably a far more pressing safety issue than DRL's.

I agree with the windshield wiper/headlight automatic activation. Its the Law already in most states! Funny, simple changes in switches and wiring can be so helpful but yet most car manufacturers are slow to move it that direction. How many times have people forgot to shut their headlight off during the daytime when they were accidently left on due to rain and came back to their vehicles later to find a dead battery. It wasn`t until I bought an 06` Hyundai Sonata and 06` Kia Rio that I realized that Korean Auto manufacturers simply tied in the ignition off switch with the headlights as well. If you shut the engine off and removed the keys.....no headlights left on to drain the battery. Wow, now thats an idea!

That's kind of the cheapo way to do it if it turns the lights off instantly. Most every car I've been in since around 2000 or so has had automatic headlight off after the door is closed with no key in the ignition after about 30 seconds or so. That gives a little bit of a buffer for those who want to use the car headlights to illuminate their driveway or garage at night while they walk to the door and fiddle with the locks. Definitely a good feature in either case compared to how it used to be.

Ford shuts off the headlights and interior lights automatically after 10 minutes or so - it's called Battery Saver. That allows them to stay on for safety but prevents the battery from being drained.

The issue with mandating auto headlamps is cost on lower priced vehicles. To me it's totally worth the cost but others may not feel that way.

As long as they are only automatic for the windshield wipers. At most other times, I find auto headlights to be quite annoying. See my note about the ones I see turning off and on just from driving under overpasses.

I saw that but I don't understand why it's so annoying.

1. Along with the headlights, it also adjusts the backlighting for the guages. Annoying.

2. It makes me think the car behind me with auto headlights is trying to get my attention for some reason when it's really just the auto lamps being over-sensitive. Annoying.

3. I'm smart enough to turn on my own headlights when I need them. I don't need my car deciding for me. Annoying.

I find it much more annoying when someone forgets to turn on their lights. But I guess that's just me.

Punish the responsible to make up for the irresponsible? I've never driven in the rain without using my headlights. And I've never owned a car with auto lights.

Since when is having someone else's lights turn on occasionally for no reason "punishing" you?

Ford automatic headlamps have a delay so they don't come on when you go under an overpass. That should also be required which would alleviate your "annoyance" or "punishment" or whatever you're objecting to.

The punishment would be mandating them on all vehicles which would unnecessarily raise the price.

Carforford, I sent your regards as requested to both "Nancy & Harry"! Please do the same for me when you chat next with Shawn, Rush,Glenn,Sarah, Michelle Bachmann, and the rest of your right wing Tea Party Socialist fear mongering friends. Oh, I almost forgot, and a "shout out" for both of our favorite idiot, Joe the Plumber, (who was NEVER a licensed Plumber), who was terrified of Wealth Redistribution, when he never made 50K a year in his entire life. Guess it proves the point I`ve been advocating for years....Life`s too short too drink cheap beer, it diminishes what few brain cells one has and Joe proves that point everyday! There is only one thing worse then Single Payer or Socialize Medicine in the form of National Health care like Canada and most of the (free) world already has. And that is.....being un-insured, under-insured, un-insurable. Like I stated in an earlier post, those that have no health insurance due to the fact that they chose not to purchase it or could not afford it, when they show up at the hospital ER or a ambulatory clinic and have no money to pay the bill, if they are under 65, Medicaid pays the bill, if over 65 Medicare pays the bill. You, me and every other US taxpayer ends up paying for the un-insured through your Federal Tax dollars whether you like it or not. Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy stopped paying those bills for the un-insured years ago when their cheques started to bounce. You Teabaggers can take your (tea) black or with cream, but there is NO FREE LUNCH!

I`m sorry, like Skip Wilson use to say...."The Devil Made Me Do It", guess for me it was Carsforford made me rant. It was the wrong forum to address this matter anyway, I agree.
