Apprenticeship program status

With the current situation with jobs floating plant to plant (trades wise) is the apprenticeship program still in force in Louisville there are no apprentices currently in my classification (elect) at either plant LAP OR KTP. Anyone know anything?

Last, I was told retraining of current trades, like Tool & Die, will be offered for electrician. When? Where? I believe that retraining of current trades has be offered before anyone on apprenticeship list is put on. There is still alot of trades working production or on temp assingment in there trade.

Appr. program is dead in the water.

Ironically, wasn't it from a case of employees taking action for being unfairly treated in the apprenticeship qualification process?

Lawyers fixed the problem. Now EVERYONE is unfairly treated. IMO.

It's happening today, beg your pardon.

Only the Pyro's have been combined with Electrician. Why, you ask? Because we shared some of the basic classes.

Besides, T&D are too arrogant to be apprentices again. They will come into the trade thinking they already know everything.

At Indy, our electrician/pyro boys are doing great---

At least it's going good there. It's terrible at the Rouge.

We still have Pyrometer work in some of the plants in the area so there are some Pyro's that will never become Electricians. There is also talk of some plants needing to hire Pyrometers off the street because they are running short, but won't let the Pyro/Elects go back to their original trade to fill the positions.

Not to mention the fact that the Company and Union sidestepped the whole Apprenticeship program by classifying Pyrometer Journeymen as Electrical Apprentices. I could see a lawsuit from that decision if somebody waiting on the Electrical Apprenticeship list finds out and gets a bug up their ass.

I think the program is dead everywhere. Why put on apprentices when they can magic wand them in now..?

Sad to say the magic wand usually gets someone killed down the road from lack of knowledge. Ford should reinstate the App. program if they plan on being around years from now. Its takes years for a person to be a tradesman so ford should be training while they are growing, not waiting untill they are desprate for them.

This "Magic Wand" sounds quite fishy.

What is going on at Lima?

Are they not puting on Apprentices thru the program?

Are they just getting production members and making them Skilled?

Hmmm....so, does the Rouge currently have elec. apprentices?

As a result of the 2007 agreement Pyrometers were consolidated into the Electrical Trade. Since December of 2007 the Pyrometers had a classification change to Electricians. This summer (2010) the State of Michigan changed the Electrical code that required all Electricians to go thru a bona fide Electrical Apprenticeship and actually show proof to the state. This change made it illegitimate for previous Pyrometers to get licensed or even work on electrical equipment. Because the previous Pyrometers only received half of the Electrical classes in the Pyrometer Apprenticeship the Company was forced to comply with the state and put the previous Pyrometers in an Electrical Apprenticeship.

So, in effect the previous Pyrometers were already Electricians from the 2007 agreement and forced by the state to make them go thru an Apprenticeship. Hope this clears up the misinformation you may have had.

I didn't give any misinformation. You told the whitewashed version.

If this is the case, then why are there still Welder Repairman changing weld caps, shunts, jumpers, and weld guns in the Stamping plant? Better yet, why is there Machine Repairman doing Welder Repair (Electrical) work in the Stamping plant?

If this is true shame on the Electricians there letting others do their work. You can't blame the union if the workers just lay down and let the company destroy their trade.

Many grievances have been filed about this. Unfortunately, Local 600 has no power and the stamping plant manager is allowed to do what he wants, when he wants.
