Project ST - History Lessons: #19 – 1983 Ford Escort Turbo GT

Recommended Posts

As some of you know, I'm working with fifteen52, Ken Block, and Ford on their Project ST campaign. The project is all about pumping up the new Focus ST in North America, but we're also out to elevate and educate people on some of the serious small performance cars Ford has been offering overseas and some lesser known domestic ones for years and linking that pedigree back to the new 2013 Ford Focus ST. And that's where I come in.

I want to meet the man who wears a striped shirt, has a mustache and drives a Red Escort Turbo GT

You should too.

Was this a limited market item? I remember so-called Escort GT models, but they were mostly cosmetic in nature. I certainly don't remember a turbo option, but fuel injection was.

I thought the turbo was an EXP exclusive in the early '80s.

Definitely more than cosmetic. The Escort GT and Lynx RS had a different suspension with the high performance TRX wheel/tire combo, better seats, EFI and a 5-speed (vs the regular Escorts 4-speed). IIRC, the engines available for 83 had 55 hp (diesel), 69 hp (1.6 2V), 80 hp (1.6 2V HO), 88 hp (EFI) and 120 hp (EFI Turbo).

I actually liked the EXP Turbo, I thought the airdam and the bubble hatch balanced styling that was pretty awkward at first.

I had an '82 EXP 1.6 5 speed before the Turbo and bubble hatch. It was a fun little car to drive and autocross but not fast by any measure. I traded it for an '84 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z which was fun to drive and fast.
