Gurgeh
"During the hearing, the NTSB was highly critical of Tesla for what it sees as misleading marketing of its driver assistance system and a lax attitude toward the system's operational design domain. But there was plenty of blame to share—the board also excoriated the National Highway Transportation Safety Agency for providing utterly ineffectual oversight when it comes to so-called 'level 2' driver assists, as well as California's highway agency CalTrans, which failed to replace a damaged crash attenuator in front of the concrete gore, which would in most likelihood have saved Huang's life. " 'This tragic crash clearly demonstrates the limitations of advanced driver assistance systems available to consumers today. There is not a vehicle currently available to US consumers that is self-driving. Period. Every vehicle sold to US consumers still requires the driver to be actively engaged in the driving task, even when advanced driver assistance systems are activated. If you are selling a car with an advanced driver assistance system, you’re not selling a self-driving car. If you are driving a car with an advanced driver assistance system, you don’t own a self-driving car,' said NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt." https://arstechnica-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/arstechnica.com/cars/2020/02/ntsb-blasts-tesla-caltrans-and-nhtsa-for-autopilot-death/?amp_js_v=a3&amp_gsa=1&amp=1&usqp=mq331AQFKAGwASA%3D#aoh=15827605498191&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&amp_tf=From %1%24s&ampshare=https%3A%2F%2Farstechnica.com%2Fcars%2F2020%2F02%2Fntsb-blasts-tesla-caltrans-and-nhtsa-for-autopilot-death%2F
rampagex7
On a related note, I just saw an article in the most recent NFPA Journal magazine about this same Model X crash and all the problems that Mountainview Fire Dept encountered afterward with the battery still being energized and catching fire. Definitely worth a read: https://www.nfpa.org/News-and-Research/Publications-and-media/NFPA-Journal/2020/January-February-2020/Features/EV-Stranded-Energy
snooter
Buyers believe self driving is safe and viable...tesla has played right along and has done nothing to explain otherwise...ntsb needs to get involved and it looks like they finally have taken a position on the matter....i also hope they start to go after the 15" tv screens which seems to be the latest must haves... rperez817
Tesla needs to do a much better job communicating to customers and regulators the current limitations as well as capabilities of its Full Self Drive computers. It does post a disclaimer on its website, but not prominently. " The currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous. The activation and use of these features are dependent on achieving reliability far in excess of human drivers as demonstrated by billions of miles of experience, as well as regulatory approval, which may take longer in some jurisdictions. As these self-driving features evolve, your car will be continuously upgraded through over-the-air software updates.

92merc
How re-programming to require hands on the wheel. GM's SuperCruise watches your eyes to make sure you are looking up at the road. Tesla could program in solutions to ensure the driver's attention. But it's not...
