Anyone From Chicago Alive and Kicking?

Temps aren't working out very well, I hear. Maybe I would think twice about working at CAP if I am constantly laid off with no benefits!

There is a few good ones, thats it. We had a few never come back after break, some have been training for a couple weeks and still constantly miss things that the group leaders are constantly running to get. Few gone to medical after a couple days and getting unauthorized leaves.

I think management really needs to hurry and get there shit straight. There is quite a few people pissed if the freeze is true, sold there house already and found a new job. It's really sad they mess with peoples lives this much.

I wonder what percentage of these TFT's are sticking around? Not only at CAP but elsewhere.

With all the down weeks you guys have what do they do with trades during these weeks? I am a millwright at a ach plant. We have many car lines at our plant when a line goes down for a week or two they just lay off a few guys at time. Most of the time we get enuff volunteers and dont have to force anyone. By the way I picked chicago as one of my areas I would flow back to.

Generally, Duane, we have been working while the down weeks are happening because of the new equipment and the outside contractors. We have 11 millwrights in body and 4 are taking an inverse layoff these next 3 weeks. We had 53 millwrights and we are down to 40 and probably 33 or so by Sept. We may not replace many of those leaving.

Most of those new hires are goofballs who don't seem too serious anyway. But, honestly, why should they? I really wouldn't expect to see any of them come back after this long layoff... Most of them are ineligible for unemployment. Chances are rather good they won't be sitting on their thumbs waiting to come back to get paid.

Speaking of new hires....I have this new hire with like a week in the plant trying to tell me how to do my job lol I just can't believe the nerve of some people lol

lol, no ties or history with the company. They don't care!!!!!!!

Fords and GMs model does not include any type of education on why we need to win, or at least compete. Ask Toyoty what kind of intense brainwashing happens before any emplyee shoots their 1st screw.

So with Ford and GM it's "education" and with Toyota it's "intense brainwashing"?

I know people that work for Toyota at the Texas truck plant, and before they even start working, they go through intensive training on why Toyota is so great. I don't know if Ford or GM do that, but I do know that Toyota does do a certain amount of "brainwashing".

I don't doubt that Toyota does a bit of BW for the newbies. I was trying to point out Whosure's hypocratic thinking, in that Ford needs to educate the newb's on our history and why we need to, and I quote "win". I find it funny that it would be educating at Ford, but brainwashing at Toyota.

On another note, how will CAP train all these newb's in time to replace the ppl leaving with all the down time over the next 2 months?

From what was last heard there is nobody leaving the next couple of months.

There were people whose walking day was Friday. I know of some people who have been pushed back ( my son moved from May to June i.e. ) but unlike salaried buyouts, I don't believe hourly buyouts can be rescinded. It would be wonderful if the company would come to me and make a counteroffer of more than $35k to stay!

I would be actually just as pleased to receive my buyout check and be asked to come back as a tft/tpt.. At least I'd have the power and the choice to change my mind with no hurt other than what I've already had ...

If that makes any sense...

I would normally be working but decided to take the inverse for these three weeks. I am familiar with paint and I know they are upgrading but which robots are you talking about?

the rumor is that they are going to install 42 paint robots in the booth and replace the sprayers for the interiors with robots,in my opinion that would be a good thing for the plant

We had a week long orientation @ CAP when I hired in in 04, they went into detail about how toyota wanted nothing better then to put us out of business and that we would have to go above and beyond and build a great car,

Sounds good, I hope they work without too many crashes.

In my experience few people listen or absorb the material presented at these meetings. We've had so many meetings over the years about new processes, directions and new acronyms but we are still in these difficult times. I was offered an opportunity to become a supervisor in paint engineering in 2000 and agreed to try it for 6 months. We had meetings in salaried about Lean Mfg. and when I expressed an interest in learning more , the plant manager referred me to some literature since he wasn't all that familiar with the concept. In my 38 years at Ford, my experience has been that the bottom line is production, costs, then quality. Most everyone pays lip service to the acronym of the month, then everyone hustles to look good before the next audit.

I remember a spokesman from Dearborn stating in a townhall meeting in 1992 that if Ford couldn't make money in the auto business that they would quit the business. Bottom line is we can't continue to run a business because people have an emotional attachment to our nameplate. There have been hundreds of car companies that have ceased to exist, Ford is not immune.

We are starting the 08 build of the 500,freestyle,montego in february....not the lincoln...they havnt even sent the product specialists to detroit for the lincoln yet..that dont happen till march...by the look of things...(sales figures for january) our 3 cars all sold half of what they did last january...is a dismal sight to see the ford sales report and see our 3 cars showing a 50% drop in sales for each model...thats not a good sign..hopefully people are holding out for the 08's but im not thinkin so...we have to face facts here...our cars are not what people want..we need to make them what people want.

I guarantee you, I'm holding out for the '08... alas, I'm not your average car buyer.
