Ford's better idea: more, brighter colors

More than half of the cars and trucks sold in the United States today -- 60 percent -- are coated in one of four basic colors: white, black, red and silver.

Although those colors come in a variety of tones and finishes, color matters to consumers a lot more these days than this rudimentary palette suggests.

Vehicle paint is an area where I have very strong feelings.

One of the best colors I've seen on a Ford is the dark blue of the Ford GT... I would absolutely die to be able to get that on a Mustang. The Ford Taurus in dark blue is an absolute knockout.

Another color I'd like to see available would be perhaps a Black Cherry or a similar color, where just by glancing, it's black, but when sunlight hits it, the metallic in the paint glows.

Finally, I would love to see two-tone Lincolns along the lines of this:

A Lincoln MKS, blue with a silver hood, roof, and trunk, would be simply breathtaking.

Looks like Ford is really trying to please the customer. It's smart to remove any excuses for not choosing a Ford. I feel that younger buyers are more interested in loud/high style/tekkish schemes, whereas older folks prefer a more demure, sophisticated, elegant palette. Kinda like shoes & clothes, huh? I hope they decide to upscale the interiors as well. The new Taurus dash is *not* inspiring. Unfortunate, because the rest of the interior is fairly nice.

I've always liked midnight blue. My 91 Escort had it and it still looked good up to the day it got totalled.

Have you ever seen an "electric" midnight blue? VERY nice.

Having at least 3 or 4 reds, blues and several white/ silver/ blacks gives a good chance for personalization. Two-ttoned interiors are nice too. Thanks for the find!

Very snazzy!! I love the black cherry paint..my sis got a custom job on her car years ago and my god it was gorgeous..your right when the sun hit it a certain way.....beautiful!! Would be nice if they continued along those lines w/other colors too. Ford definitely needs to expand their colors and hues to accomodate both young and old in all the body styles.

Poor old VW paint shop guys must have loved the Volkswagen Polo Harlequin, the car made for the car buyer that could not make up his mind what colour protective coating he wanted. Uncle Henry had the right idea any colour as long as it is black, although white is preferred in hot countries where it is said it reflects the heat, rally cars once had matt black front bonnets in the past so that the driver was not dazzled by the suns refection. Nissan make a car for Barbie Girls.

I see a lot of newer cars customized with two tone paint like this... The cars I see that get the two tone paint most often are the Chrysler 300 and the Chevy HHR. For the Chrysler, it see it flip-flopped in silver and black and the HHR, people like to throw almond paint on he lower half of that orange sunburst metallic. Vehicles that they look on best usually have upper body lines that flow from front to back in a straight line...

I prefer darker colors on cars... I tend to favor black, dark cherry or merlot, dark blue and shades of carcoal or titanium. That brown that the Fusion and MKZ uses is also nice too. I like white if it is done right like set off with blue stripes like a Shelby GT500 or constrasted with black like a GTI. I like grabber orange as well as sunburst orange like the Edge and some Chevy's have.

Titanium Green on the Five Hundred is so so so good.

Not so much on the Fusion and questionably on the Taurus.

What I don't understand is this push of this brown color at Buick. It works great for the Enclave and Lucerne, but then they put the color on a LaCrosse and.... ugh!

They need to change the LaCrosse quick!

I don't wana lighter brighter car. I'm driving a vehicle, not painting a kids room. I want dark, elegant colors. Like the dark blue on my Explorer.

And for pete's sake, bring back liquid gray. Best color Ford ever made.

I hate dark colors...they get dirty too easy!

my Tungsten grey is about as dark as will go...

I don't care what colors they offer, I hate trendy colors. Ford puts some REALLY hideous colors on their cars, and it shocks me that people buy them. Some of the ugliest colors are on Ford cars right now. They aren't stand out colors, they are usually somewhere in the beige/gold vein but are the most hideous iterations I've ever seen.

I'll stick with black, but I do like Alloy and some of the dark greens and blues Ford started using in 2008 on the Taurus and Escape.
