Ford Jellymoulds Posted November 15, 2007 Share Posted November 15, 2007 Verve or Fiesta, names do not bother me to much, as long as the badge or decal is attached to a good car it should sell itself. I would like to see just one name for the car so when you step off a plane in a different country it is instantly recognised worldwide. Why did VW choose the name Rabbit for the US market, as most Americans play Golf? Ford used to have the Cortina/Taunus in Europe it got proved in the end to be expensive to build/market similar cars. Long term it is better to keep the same name to keep the continuity with new and old buyers F-Series & Mustang prove this point, Ford dropped the Capri in Europe and had to start fresh and build up a new brand name again from scratch, they tried the Probe, Puma, & Cougar all three were complete sales flops. So Ford went from having the best selling sports coupe in Europe to no sales today. Saddest thing l find today is how folk buy the car for the badge, Fords Mondeo is a much better car than the 3 Series BMW. All that lets it down is the badge its a shame Ford marketing needs to address the problem. Fords Cortina never had this problem it just mopped up BMW sales with bags of classic styling & fun RWD. Ford Cortina should never evolved as a Sierra, then Mondeo. Ford should have kept the Cortina name and gone down sale road as Mercedes 190 with its classic elegant styling which was not to far off the last Cortinas shape, Ford would still be have been at No1 spot in Europe now, rather than the massive lucky if it makes the UK top 10 best sellers like the Mondeo does at the moment, the UK is the only place where most Mondeos are sold in Europe. Let's bring this brand new car here, then saddle it with an old ass name so people have preconceptions of what it's like. Festiva/Fiesta to me = little POS car. Right up there with Aspire. Also, no guy wants to say, "I drive a Fiesta." It's like cutting your balls off. I know I'm going to get called out here, but I'd go with the name "Maverick". I highly doubt anyone in the target market will know the name has been used before. Notice I'm not saying use the name because of Ford's history, I'm saying use the name because it fits perfectly into the demographic the car will be targeting. Mel Gibson played Maverick, James Garner was his father. From dictionary.com, Maverick: 2. a lone dissenter, as an intellectual, an artist, or a politician, who takes an independent stand apart from his or her associates. Kind of a whole, I'm unique like everyone else type deal that people eat up. I would have really liked the name "Rogue" but Nissan got it first. Fiesta sounds pinata-ish. Plus, I honestly feel people that are racists won't buy it. When illegal Mexican immigration is a serious problem, you don't use a Spanish name for a car, even if the word has largely become accepted. It had the 302 V8, bucket seats, floor shifted C4 auto and the Luxury Decor Option (LOL, shag carpeting). With the V8 and the factory radials (rare for the day), it was quick and handled well. After 72, the Maverick (and most cars) went downhill with the chromium plated railroad ties (5 MPH bumpers) and the much stiffer (especially in California) smog regulations.
