Untrue!!!

They did run some LS skids at Fatrock ( ohh sooooo saahhhweee ) Flat rock, but that was just a engineering thing.

I think this whole argument about Wixom vs. Atlanta is not the point. Six plants are talked about in the papers. Do you really think Wixom has a chance. Over the last three years, Ford has done everything but shut Wixom’s doors. I don’t think some bright light went off in Upper managements’ head and all of a sudden they realized Wixom was their savior.

Atlanta has a strong work force. Atlanta runs two shifts full with 1800 hourly. They just received JD Powers best for parts gone wrong award They’re named number 3 for most efficient plants in North America and has always been on top. Right now they are running #1 for this quarter. They just won a national award from the EPA for environmental waist management. They are ending the year within their plant’s budget. Name another plant that has accomplished that. With all that in mind, Atlanta is the only plant in Dearborn with a launch team still working.

Don’t fool yourselves with the idea that Atlanta can’t expand. There is plenty of room within two miles of the plant for expansion. Atlanta’s plant management has been stacked with launch specialist. Did Dearborn send all those high rollers down here within the last year just to sit on their thumbs ?

Look, I don’t know witch plants are going to stay open. An assembly plant is its work force. Atlanta has always stepped up to the plate and made profits. It’s never lost money for Ford. If Ford were to announce Atlanta’s closing, I think your going to see a lot of eyebrows raise on Wall Street.

So? Most of what you just said was also true of Edison, Buick City, etc.........

Ford is looking at cutting costs, plain and simple. If they think they can cut $0.50 per car by closing one plant instead of another, they will. ;)

yes you are correct that it all boils down to money, but money comes in many different forms for companies. When a plant gets an award for building more cars with less people in less time than any other plant in the U.S.(which we are on target to do), and at the same time, they achieve a least things gone wrong award, thats money in fords pocket. Im not refering to our budget either, it has alot to do with wall street, etc... Im not saying that AAP will stay open because of this, but for people to say we will close just because we are too far for the parts suppliers is rediculous. Not one single person on this website has a clue as to whats going on with plant closings. We can think about some obvious reasons why to close or keep a plant open, but we are all still clueless to the actual decision process they use. Everyone buys into rumors, including the media, and its all hogwash.

We shall know our fate come January, and some folks will say "I told you so", and some will say "that doesnt make any sense". Either way, it will be a surprise to most when its announced.

csmauto and the WSJ must have hit a nerve and exposed to Bill Ford the they have leaks. If not the Detroit News new artical on plant closings will be denied by Mark Fields, we'll see.

Now that VC is back in the Ford group are the going to be counted in any of the new plant closing numbers.

Not all closings will be announced in Jan. This is so they can stick a knife in Atlanta Ga. and Wixom MI. to suck the most blood out of each other. Datts ok cuz its jus guud biz.

Will Mr. Gettlefinger even entertain the thought of health care concessions with all this B$^* S*^#! going on. I hope not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Bill Ford is the Chairman of the Detroit Economic Club. He is suppose to promote the economic delvelopment of the Detroit metro area. QUESTION, If he closes Wixom is he a HYPROCRITE. and no if he has Mark Fields do it you still will be the hyprocrite, Your the Chairman of the Board!

Bill, HYPROPCRITE OR NOT , its you decision.

You should thank the stars for Bill Ford,he's alot better Chairman then Mr.W at GM. Bill has his last name on these cars Mr.W is just another CEO. You should read Bill Fords speech about manufacturing as a hole not just automotive in America and how it effects the economy. He has met with Dick Cheney and I believe he will be the forerunner to help push Legislation through to help our U.S. manufacturing base. It's not his fault that he's has to shut down plants it's the American's who buy FOREIGN CARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First off the base of suppliers do make or break anyone now. Cost is what they are after and I think if you look at the area you sit on and realize there is a high possiblility that they can close any plant. But in all reality if you have a supplier that is within a 50 mile radius of the plant it is cheaper to ship parts but if you have a series of plants within that radius it gets really cheap. Remember they are trying to get as many vehicles as possible to use the same parts. I know that some parts won't work but think of the money they are saving by having more than one plant in an area that uses the same motors for instance.

Are you sure your plant is the leanest?

Don't get me wrong I hope nobody closes but things are different now because of sales and I understand you having pride in your plant. But like the other guy said the awards never saved the others and they may still close wixom but we may find out a hint of this crap in jan. Now we wait....

Like I said before, I know that it comes down to the almighty dollar. There is a good chance that we will be closed, but its not going to be solely on the fact that we are too far from the suppliers. Thats the point I was trying to make. There are so many factors that go into the decision, all of which nobody here really knows.

Does anyone know why they closed EAP? I mean do you really know why they chose that plant? I highly doubt it. Ive heard that Edison was a good plant also, and I know that winning awards for quality doesnt mean much.

As far as being the leanest, its being based on last years harbor report. We placed 3rd last year, and right now we are avering better than the 1st place plant last year. So unless the two other plants made some big changes also, we will finish ahead of them. But who knows, maybe there are some other plants that made some big changes that will surprise us.

  • 4 weeks later...

CSMJ, You forgot the one where I said that Bill Ford Jr. was a good person at heart. Unfortunently that hasn't helped in the running of this Co. the last ten years. Yes he was on the Board of directors when Jac destroyed this Co. It must burn him up to sit on the Board and not be able to do anything. But I bet he still excepted his stock options that they hand out for sitting through those meetings.

I'm just disappointed at how this once great Co. has fallen so fast by bad decisions by top management.

I use to joke about the Ford shuffel. two steps foward and one step back. Lets just hope that their goal of 10% market share will please wallstreet and maybe someone will bid F stock up to 18 so some of the workers 401K's will look a little better.

I can't wait to hear Mark Fields speech on the 23rd.. I hope the people who will have to make the sacrifice for all the blunders of the past will understand that it for the good of Ford Motor Company.

So does that mean that Wixom will be the new pilot plant? Or producing cars?

99 Pony, No, The pilot plant will be in the GT Building 2007-2008 and the plant will be one of Fords FIRST MEGA FLEX PLANTS that will build 5 to 9 car or trucks down the lines in late 2007-2008. BIG CHANGES FOR WIXOM.

What 5 to 9 vehicles will we be producing? And with our falling marketshare who'll be buying these 5 to 9 vehicles? I always enjoy hearing good rumors, especially considering all the bad ones we've heard the last couple of years. But honestly 5 to 9 vehicles just doesn't make any since given Fords current market share. Thanks for the entertainment though..... And By the way I hope your right..... :D

It is getting so old reading about what plants are closing and which are staying open. Unless you are Bill Ford or a person in the management meetings with him you have no idea what is going to happen until the 23rd. Just sit back relax, take a pill and wait for the news to come out. Enough Said, End of Story!

This is a reply to the comment on Wixom getting 5 to 9 new vehicles, sorry it took so long but I waited untill I stopped laughing to write it.Ok two things, first if wixom gets 9 cars that means every other plant building cars now will close Ford will only need to keep 3 plants open wixom for cars and 2 truck plants.Second if wixom builds 9 cars Ford will be out of business inside of 10 years due to the cost of all the RECALLS!!!!

TOM WALSH: Governor scrambles to save Ford, beef up ASC

She hopes to keep Wixom plant, help smaller firm

Michigan Gov. Granholm is scrambling to play both offense and defense this week during the North American International Auto Show, trying to save as many Ford Motor Co. jobs as she can while trying to convince ASC Inc. and other companies to create jobs by expanding or building new plants in the state.

Granholm met Wednesday afternoon with Anne Stevens, Ford's chief operating officer for the Americas, and Steve Hamp, chief of staff for Ford CEO Bill Ford Jr., to discuss the struggling auto giant's big restructuring plan to be announced Jan. 23.

"Obviously, we're very concerned about Wixom," Granholm told me in a telephone interview after the meeting, referring to the Wixom assembly plant where the Ford GT and two Lincoln sedans, the Town Car and LS, are made. The sprawling 4.7-million-square-foot facility in Wixom has 1,560 workers. "It's important to us, both economically and emotionally," she said.

She said Stevens and Hamp were mum about the specifics of Ford's cost-cutting plan, which is expected to affect 10 to 13 production facilities and eliminate as many as 30,000 jobs.

Granholm said she laid out a strong business case for keeping Wixom open, including tax breaks on personal property and the Single Business Tax. She also said the state would be willing to rebuild the I-96 intersection at Wixom Road if that would help accommodate further expansion or renovation of the plant site there.

On the job creation side, Granholm is trying to convince Southgate-based ASC, a specialty car builder that is evaluating sites for a new assembly plant, to locate its plant here.

ASC wants to build or buy a 500,000- to 600,000-square-foot assembly plant that could build four or five small-volume specialty vehicles at the same time, employing as many as 800 to 1,000 workers, Chris Theodore, ASC vice chairman, said in an interview at the auto show Tuesday.

ASC has about 200 employees at a plant in Lansing that makes 42 components for the retro-styled Chevrolet SSR roadster. But General Motors Corp. recently announced it would be closing its Lansing Craft Centre where the SSR is assembled and ending production of the vehicle.

Theodore said Lansing could be a possible site for the new assembly plant but that ASC would need flexible work rules and a competitive wage scale

Granholm said four or five other states and Mexico are also courting ASC, which wants to make a decision on the site this year.

Granholm is acutely aware that she's in fierce competition with other states and countries for automotive jobs during a chaotic period for the industry. The governors of Ohio and Minnesota have been in Detroit this week and are pitching their states to automakers and suppliers from the Motor City to China.

"They may be here pitching hard, but nobody's working harder than me," said Granholm, who's also gearing up for a re-election campaign at a time when Michigan's economy is stubbornly lagging behind the rest of the nation.

Monday morning quarterbacking is what Granholm does best... Don't you people think that she's a little late to the games already? What has she accomplished in 3 years? Let's see... Worse roads (for certain areas based on politics), higher taxes, hidden fees and surcharges, etc... Oh, yeah... The Toyota fiasco and what's going on with the controversy of selling that property cheap according to documents filed in court by another developer in Washtenaw county. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO SELL TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER! These are just some of the examples. I got news for you. If Ford is going to cut a lot of jobs in this state and I can't forsee the future on it, but you can bank on it that she will not get re-elected if that alone comes to pass. And if the UAW endorses her again... WE'LL YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE WHY THEY ARE CONTRADICTING THEMSELVES AS WELL AS THE HYPOCRISY OF IT, AND THEIR ENDORSEMENTS ARE NOTHING MORE THAN PURE POLITICS. THAT'S BASICALLY WHAT THE UAW CARES ABOUT ANYWAY. POLITICS AND MONEY. Not the rank and file like you guys and myself!

Isn't any wonder why the population in this state is slipping little by little day after day? When all these cuts are done and over with at GM and Ford, What kind of economy will this state be then? It sure won't get any better until she is out of office! If I had a chance... I'd get out of Michigan if I am able to transfer to another Ford plant out of state. This whole state is going downhill slowly all because of the politicans, the crooked corporate thugs, the real UAW slugs who are fat pocket corporate types. Out of state greedy developers who are building useless mini-malls, mini-mansions, and condos way, WAY priced out of our budget! THAT'S THE REAL FUCKING PROBLEMS! Not us!
