Bryan1
Where are GM's 8 speeds? According to GMI, the next gen 2014 Silvy will have 6 speeds across the board. They are 4 and 6 speeds now. http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f22/semi-confirmed-news-next-gen-2014-trucks-106048/

Noah Harbinger
Again, if freeway speeds went up to 85mph which they won't because of too much traffic congestion which is getting worse every year.... I hope flexible scheduling becomes more popular - if work start/stop times were evenly spread out, rush-hour congestion would be a thing of the past. vision street wear 2
Believe it or not marketing is also a heavy factor....consumer thinking something along the line of 8 is bigger that 6 so it must be better (even if the Ford 6 speed gets better FE than the 8 speed competition). Not trying to diminish the importance of fuel economy because they will provide better FE.

You might be able to get another 5-10% improvement in MPGs but at what cost?

You might be able to get another 5-10% improvement in MPGs but at what cost? Exactly the problem. By the time you pay to develop it, try to determine if you can retool an existing line (which is very difficult to balance the current volume requirements while trying to retool), possibly purchasing new lines you are into it for possibly a couple hundred million. Then there is the problem if you make it Lincoln exclusive you do not have enough volume to spread the cost over.
