mettech
http://blog.caranddriver.com/ford-reveals-plans-for-new-in-house-designed-eight-speed-automatic-transmission/ "...Ford hasn’t said when the new box will hit the market, but we figure that some time in 2012 would be a good guess..." Any updated on the new transmission from Ford?
silvrsvt
Man thats an old article! The new Hybrid transmission is the modified 6F in the Fusion and C-Max and last time I heard the 8 or 9 speed transmission was another JV with GM like the 6F

mackinaw
Forget the 8-speed tranny, Ford and GM are cooperating on developing both 9 speed and 10 speed transmissions. Not sure when we'll see them. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/09/29/us-autos-transmission-idUSBRE88R1JZ20120929
BORG
The 2015 F-150 and Ford Edge is probably the launching point for new Transmissions.
ice-capades
All the powertrain engineering and weight savings going forward will be to meet the ever demanding CAFE standards going forward along with the competitive pressure. For some of us this going to be similar to what it was like 25 years ago. Back then a Dealer could count on one hand the number of Mustang GT's they'd see in a model year. Ford new exactly how many Escorts they had to sell in order to build one more Mustang GT, Crown Victoria or Town Car and still meet that year's CAFE requirement without risking the penalties. The more performance oriented or less fuel efficient models will still be available but in smaller numbers as the market demand shifts but you'll pay even more to get those vehicles. There's one major difference now though: even the "underpowered" base model engines in cars now are as powerful as some of the "premium" engines offered in cars 25 years ago.
