Visser says online sales aren't meant to replace dealers, though. Cars ordered online will still have to be delivered at dealerships, he said. The goal, however, is likely to make buying a Volvo easier for customers who live far away from a Volvo dealer, and also allow the company's roughly 2,000 global dealers to stock fewer vehicles.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that Volvo is spending over $10 billion on product and advertising to change its image.

Be grateful that Ford didn't have to find that money, the payback will take years.

This will only go as far as Volvo dealers allow. Ford tried the same thing and dealers sued under state franchise laws and won. Hopefully the Volvo dealers are smarter and cooperate with Volvo.

I have a soft spot for Volvo and I hope it works out for them. I really do wish Ford could have found a way to keep Volvo when the auto market falling apart.
