  1. IIHS summary of the impact of driver education programs on crash rate among young drivers. Teenagers (iihs.org) Formal evaluations of U.S. high school driver education programs indicate little or no reduction in crashes per licensed driver (Lonero & Mayhew, 2010; Mayhew et al., 2014; Mayhew et al., 2017; Peck, 2011). Other school-based programs, such as those intended to reduce alcohol-impaired driving, have not been shown to be effective, at least in the short term (Williams, 1994). Skid control training and other kinds of advanced skill training seem to increase crash risk, particularly among young males (Mayhew et al., 1998; Christie, 2001; Williams & Ferguson, 2004). A possible explanation is that young drivers trained in these skills may become overconfident, leading them to take unnecessary risks. A study evaluating hazard perception training, which aims to change a driver's awareness and perception of potential risks while driving, did not find a significant overall effect on crashes among young drivers; however, males ages 16-18 who had taken the training had a 24 percent lower crash rate relative to males in the control group (Thomas et al., 2016).
  2. Thanks for that info sullynd sir. The Mustang Mach-E my wife and I ordered shortly after reservations opened is in a similar situation. The vehicle has been built, but has a quality hold so it's not ready to ship to the dealership yet. We're OK with the wait.
  3. Cars.com posted its review of 2022 Kia Carnival today, written by Jennifer Geiger. Mrs. Geiger praised the Carnival's powertrain, feature set, and value, but was less impressed by its handling. The biggest criticisms of Carnival, to no one's surprise, are its "SUV styling" and "Kia’s smoke-and-mirrors attempt to call it anything other than a minivan". Overall assessment was "the new Carnival is a captivating competitor." 2022 Kia Carnival Review: Almost Magic | News | Cars.com
  4. The widespread deployment of fully autonomous cars has great potential for achieving the goal of zero roadway deaths by 2050. National Road to Zero, Traffic Safety Leaders Call on Biden Administration to Commit to Zero Deaths by 2050 | PAVE Campaign
  5. There's a backlog of Mustang Mach-E retail orders in which the cars have been produced but are not ready to ship to dealerships, for whatever reasons. My wife's Mustang Mach-E First Edition falls into this category. Also, monthly sales numbers should be compared against the same month a year prior, not to the previous month or 2 like the investors.com article did. Ford should immediately return to quarterly sales reporting. There is no good reason to report monthly sales numbers for the media.
  6. Thanks again kyle for sharing the Sandy Munro video series on Mustang Mach-E. Munro is a legend in automotive engineering circles for his fanatical attention to detail, so the praise Munro gave Mustang Mach-E is a big deal for sure.
  7. That threat has been very effective getting automakers to take safety more seriously.
  8. Good explanation Flying68 sir, thank you. It's a very good thing that the casualty insurance industry does this kind of testing that goes far beyond what the federal government does through NHTSA. And NHTSA benefits from IIHS' work too. The proposed expansion of NHTSA's crash test ratings program was made possible in large part to what IIHS is doing already.
  9. That's why IIHS updates its testing protocols regularly.
  10. IIHS tests are based on real world data. The testing protocols are designed using "insurance data on the human and economic losses resulting from owning and operating motor vehicles, especially the ways such losses vary among different kinds of vehicles" from the Highway Loss Data Institute. 11. Yes sir, Kia is unifying vehicle model names globally. But they have no justification for using "MPV" to describe 2022 Carnival's category in the U.S. market. Kia also retired the name Optima for its midsize sedan in the U.S. and is using the global K5 name instead. However, the Kia Motors America press release for K5 appropriately uses the word "sedan" to describe its category, not "saloon". 2021 Kia K5 Overview (kiamedia.com)
  12. Yes sir FordBuyer, the reason for that is that Ford as a company has turned. Ford is no longer behaving as if it's "been going out of business for 50 years" (to paraphrase Alan Mulally) which was the case prior to Jim Hackett becoming CEO in 2017. The fitness regimen and design thinking philosophy Hackett introduced to Ford is finally starting to pay off. There's still a lot of work that Jim Farley has to do to ensure Ford survives and thrives in the next 10, 20, and 30 years, but at least Ford is now headed in the right direction.
  13. IIHS and its members have been excellent at updating their crash test and crash avoidance ratings standards frequently to always get better and remain relevant. NHTSA's NCAP program is finally getting upgraded too. NHTSA Announces Coming Upgrades to New Car Assessment Program | NHTSA
  14. Yes sir papilgee4evaeva. Similar to "wagon" in the U.S. market versus "estate" in other parts of the world. Or "sedan" vs "saloon". That's what makes Kia's use of "MPV" for a U.S. market product so silly. Very few American car buyers are familiar with rest of the world terms "MPV", "estate", and "saloon" as vehicle types.
  15. Yes sir slemke. In the short term, the most important thing that comes from Ion Park lab is developing the vertical integration capabilities Ford desperately needs for manufacturing BEV battery systems including cells. Ford mentioned this in a press release about Ion Park. It said "This world-class 200,000 sq.-ft. learning lab will include pilot-scale equipment for electrode, cell and array design and manufacturing and will use state-of-the-art technology to pilot new manufacturing techniques that will allow Ford to quickly scale breakthrough battery cell designs with novel materials once the company vertically integrates battery cells and batteries."
  16. Very impressive results. Bronco Sport really stands out for Good rated headlamps standard on every trim level. That's not common, only 3 other models in IIHS' "Small SUV" category managed to also achieve that.
  17. Good point Ramrod79. Ford got the name for BEV F-150 right, so what really matters at this point is Ford's ability to launch BEV F-150 (Lightning) on schedule and without any major quality control issues.
  18. Thanks for sharing the story ice-capades! Did your colleague buy his Tesla as a used car from your dealership, or new directly from Tesla?
  19. Based on actions that both governments and the automotive industry are taking now, the 80%-90% threshold for BEV percentage of all new vehicle sales should be achieved closer to 2030 than 2040.
  20. The first one, though Ford isn't the only incumbent automaker that "has squandered its ability to be a leader in a space that desperately calls for in-house developed, proprietary technical leadership", as Autoextremist said.
  21. Yes sir Harley Lover. A couple things that make Farley such a good businessman is his ability to think long term, and to learn from competitors. While Ford has a lot of catching up to do in the "battery game", Farley's leadership should help the company do just that.
  22. Not just manufacturing, but R&D as well. Battery cells represent the costliest part of manufacturing high voltage battery systems and powertrains for BEV, as well as the most important factor that determines overall BEV performance and efficiency.
  23. The main reason it's important is that in-house battery production, combined with in-house system integration and software development capabilities, reduces design cycle times and speeds up innovations for battery systems. Those things are key competitive advantages that will determine which automakers will thrive and which won't even survive as the industry transitions away from ICE to 100% electric vehicles.
  24. I agree. IHS Markit's definitions of ethnic and multicultural make no sense also because non-Hispanic whites in the USA have many different ethnic groups like Nordic, Anglo, Celtic, Slavic, etc., and multiple cultures like Yankee, Appalachian, Deep Southern, Midwestern, etc. Anyway, I used the phrase "non-white people" in my post rather than "multicultural" as in the original Honda press release because the IHS Markit definition is simply referring to non-white (and whites who are Hispanic) new car buyers. The word Hispanic as used in the U.S. is stupid too, but that's a subject for another forum.
