you must not come here often....there have been many discussions on the change in epa mileage testing for 2008. It reflects more real world mileage....all cars lost mpg...for example, prius, from 60 to 45 mpg....

The 3.5 Yoda is rated higher than my Fusion I4 manual? 2007 specs, my car is rated at 31mpg hwy, which is just about what I see at 70mph, no AC. I think the 2008 ratings are 29mpg hwy for the manual? I guess there is something to be said for a larger engine working a more conservative final drive ratio. The sweet spot for the I4 manual Fusion is slower speeds - shifting at 2k, 5th gear @ 35mph = 29+ mpg combined driving in my case if I really baby it in the stop-and-go and don't exceed 70mph on the fwy.

WOW .. Ford did some serious tuning on the D35 .. the 28mpp rating is excellent .. (still lower than the 31mpg Toyota manages from their 3.5l though )

The Toyota 3.5 gets a rating of 19/28 in the Camry if I'm not mistaken. 22/31 was the old rating.

The biggest problem with the manual Fusion is the gearing. My mom gets 30 on the highway in her Fusion manual, but I bet she would get 32 with better gearing. However, that gearing also allows you to sit in 5th gear going 35-40 around town. She averages 28-29 for all driving (most of which is in the suburbs).

you are correct ... 19/28

That means that the D35 in the MKZ practically matches the rating (Fusion would probably match it since it has lower weight) .. DAMN YOU FORD ... Fusion needs a better engine ..and I pray that the PIP D30 promised for the face lift next year delivers BETTER mileage than the D35 .. because it has lower displacement and power, and is probably going to remain less refined than the competition .. so it needs SOMETHING to best them.

It is obvious that Ford has achieved a 10% increase in combined fuel mileage in the '08 MKZ. Same car, same engine & trans, that's pretty spectacular!! How did they accomplish it---Tires, gearing, or maybe just software programming? Does anybody know?

Most likely gears and software. They've had a year to tune on the 3.5L. They may have also switched to the 6F JV tranny - not sure yet.

From what I understand, yes. 07 models were tested under the old system, while the 08's and beyond are tested by the new method.

Well, you still don't seem to get it. The '08 MKZ fwd gets 10% better combined mileage than the '07 when BOTH are tested by the new '08 testing method. Go here & see for yourself.
