August Sales: Retail +21%, overall +17%

Toyota was the big winner in C4C and Sept. is expected to be the 'payback' month for all that volume.

Ah okay. But did you see the John McElroy post on Autoblog about the C4C tallies? Apparently the govt tallies divided model sales further into models with different drivetrains. If you group sales of FWD and AWD Escapes together for example, it becomes the second most popular C4C vehicle, while the FWD Escape specifically was only 10th.

With no significant improvements to the F-150 since the new body style was introduced over half a year ago, how did the F-150 post such good numbers for this month?

I think it's a combination of a recovering economy in general, defections from GM and Dodge and C4C. Nothing says clunker like a really old truck (by the govt's definition, not mine) and most people with really old trucks are going to upgrade to a really new truck, especially if they can get $4500.

C4C definitely would be a factor considering the F-150 was one of the top clunkers turned in, I'm sure some of those F-150 owners upgraded to a new F-150.

They were still riding on good sales of their more fuel-efficient vehicles.

I was suggesting that month to month they'll see a pretty significant decline--those Camry & Corolla numbers are not sustainable. Aug. was an all time record month for Toyota passenger cars.

Is it perhaps negative perception of GM over the bankruptcy?

Could be C4C combined with inventory problems for GM due to their two month shut down

Ah okay. But did you see the John McElroy post on Autoblog about the C4C tallies?

Did see that, and frankly don't know how to reconcile it with Toyota's sales figures. 54k Camry sales is a significant departure from their annualized sales rate--a departure greater than the total number of Escapes sold last month.

nice to see the venerable ranger doing so well again. just think how well a newly freshened ranger would sell, why ford forgot this truck is a absolute shame. my 98 with 210,000 miles is as strong as it ever was!!!!. thinking of buying a new one and would sure like to see a fresh faced ranger!!!!!!

I only have 93k on mine...runs like new!

Panthers weren't available under C4C.

And I'm sure droves of people would've run each other over to get to the dealer to buy a Panther had it been eligible....

With no significant improvements to the F-150 since the new body style was introduced over half a year ago, how did the F-150 post such good numbers for this month? I know that the comparisson to last years numbers were facing a depressed truck market due to hangover from the high fuel prices, so that explains the overall percentage gain. How did it manage to outsell the Silverado and Sierra together as its been a long time since that has been a regular occurance. Looking at some of the differences, Silverado and Sierra offer bigger engines (in certain models) and better gas mileage (also in only certian models). How does the F-150 continue to outcompete GM in this area? Is it perhaps negative perception of GM over the bankruptcy?

Along with the things other people have mentioned, I'd also add better inventory and therefore more configurations available at dealers.

Volvo isn't looking too bad either for August. The S 40, V 50 and C-30 did well. The XC 60 seems to have picked up the slack in SUVs and even the old S 60 is still selling. I don't recall seeing any Volvo C4C ads.

Was the MKZ C4C eligible? It took a hit when Milan and Fusion were doing great. Hopefully, the arrival of the MKT will pump some life into Lincoln sales.

Here's the full sales chart.

I still can't over the pathetic numbers for the Tundra. Was Toyota serious when it really thought it was going to challenge the Detroit 3? The Ram had over 2x as many Tundras. I mean really--7xxx compared to the F-series, Silverado/Sierra or the Ram...it's not getting anywhere.

I really think it's this: TRUCK buyers (that is, a person who buys a truck because they really need a TRUCK) isn't going to buy a Tundra. And Toyota buyers (any person who buys a car to have a car to get to work, wants it to be reliable, built well, last long) isn't buying a truck of any kind anyway.

It's a scandal they should have never been allowed in the US C4C program.

Chrysler, Ford, & GM continue to get shafted reamed up the arse by 127.77 MILLION Japanese consumers every month with just 632 Big 3 sales in Japan last month it stinks they are taking the piss.

Stop it already, the Japanese car market is terrible, and it's better that Ford stays away. If I could read a annual report, I would be a better guy to explain this to you.

to much time wasted on comparing numbers with the japanese if the big three can sell their cars with the discounts of the cfc,in real time then we can compete with them. lets face it people price point is THE MAIN REASON our native car companies can,t compete in some pricing areas. until the big three can win over first time buyers with a car that they can afford!! dollars and cents dollars and cents .....my first dealer bought car was an 83 escort i think i paid 5900 hundred for it. of course i know about times changing but look at what the japanese can offer not to mention the koreans, and who cares if they are junk and they are throwaways( junkyarsd are full of them), people buy em cause they are cheap and last the five or six years that the first time buyer owns them for. naturally they trade up to the same manufacturer who gave them that reliable service those five or six years. see what i mean????it,s that opening price point car that is getting the big three with new buyers.

Sooo... You just think the big three should just lower the price of their cars by $4,500 all the time? WTF???

You're cut off. Price out a Focus and a Civic, and tell me who's charging more.

Dumbest post of the month.
