Biker16
http://www.cnet.com/au/news/tesla-8-0-update-autopilot-cabin-overheat-protection-update/ Tesla's much-awaited vervsion 8.0 software update has just been detailed, and according to the Silicon Valley automaker, it features "the biggest UI revamp since the launch of the Model S." The comprehensive over-the-air update covers everything from changes to the automaker's Autopilot drive-assist system to improved navigation functionality, a more advanced media player and a unique Cabin Overheat Protection feature designed to keep children and pets safe. The update's headlining changes are to Autopilot. Tesla's semi-autonomous drive-assist technology suite has come under fire after several high-profile accidents. Key changes include an Autosteer automatically disabling when drivers ignore safety warnings (read: they fail to put their hands back on the wheel) and revamped object detection logic, which uses radar to register things the vehicle's camera system can't recognize. Earlier this month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed that version 8.0 updates would likely have prevented the May 7 crash that claimed the life of Model S owner Josh Brown. The fatal Florida accident triggered an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
tbone
Am I understanding this correctly, that the public is testing the autopilot future? They never talk about the testing they have done.
fuzzymoomoo
Am I understanding this correctly, that the public is testing the autopilot future? They never talk about the testing they have done. Yes, the public is testing it. It's not the smartest idea to have people with zero understanding of how the system works to test it. atomcat68
This type of testing works great when you test video games, but not with cars which can cause a 20 car pileup on the freeway.

I find it absolutely astounding that many regulators that should know better are so besotted with the acceleration of technology that they will throw the due process of proper development out the window and treat cars and buyers like cell phones... It's outrageous, it's just wrong and it's damned dangerous. Edited September 24, 2016 by jpd80

tbone
It is shocking the NTSB allows this to occur.

Elon's refusal to operate Tesla as a car company will be the very thing that makes it or sinks it. In my opinion? They're sinking. Fast.
