2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs. Tesla Model Y: The Next Normal

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs. Tesla Model Y: The Next Normal (motortrend.com)

This showdown makes it clear the increasing population of folks considering an electric SUV have compelling entries to choose from, and that the challengers to Tesla's throne are stronger than ever. "In the stuff that matters—range, performance, packaging, and price—the Model Y's closest competitor comes not from a legacy premium manufacturer like Audi or Porsche, or from fellow EV-only company Lucid—it's Ford," Loh said. "The Mach-E does a very compelling imitation of the Model Y, and when you layer on the familiarity of the Blue Oval and the trust it breeds, it's a compelling package for those unsure about Tesla's build quality, reliability, or the antics of its chief executive."

Ford's first serious, stand-alone EV has indeed put up a hell of a fight, and as more such models hit the streets—and especially as legacy carmakers gain critical electric vehicle experience—Tesla might find itself playing catch-up. Just not on this day. Loh said it best: "When you move from the Mach-E to the Model Y, you feel like you've taken a step forward into the future. The impact of that step is smaller thanks to the amazing job Ford's done, but there's no similar sense of wonder when you go from Model Y to Mach-E." The Ford Mustang Mach-E has much to recommend it, and the 480 hp/600 lb-ft GT model arriving soon may turn the tables, but the Tesla Model Y takes this head-to-head comparison test by a nose.

What should win the day is Ford's superior dealer network and better fit and finish. Over the air updates are aldo becoming more common from Ford lessening that Tesla advantage. My prediction is that Musk will sell Tesla within 3-5 years or merge with a bigger auto company or huge tech company like Apple.

At some point Tesla is going to be considered a "dated" design as the Ford Mustang Mach-E and other competing vehicles enter the market. The Tesla "look" is becoming boring  and plain jane while Ford with the Mach-E has a unique look and the Mustang heritage behind it. If Ford can ramp up Mach-E production for the 2022MY they can become an even more formidable competitor to Tesla. And if so, the market and media will take notice and reward Ford with both a higher stock price and market valuation.

These 2 things are the Mach-E's greatest advantages in the BEV market today. Ford designers hit it out of the park with styling, Mach-E is the best looking crossover type vehicle in history. And making Mach-E part of a Mustang sub-brand is extremely smart marketing.

This Motor Trend comparison test makes my wife and me look forward to taking delivery of our Mach-E First Edition even more, despite the fact that Model Y won the competition by a hair.

Worth pointing out that the author Miguel Cortina is a well known noted Ford hater so take some of the subjective criticism in the article in context. This guy is probably overcompensating for his last name but he is always extra critical of Ford vehicles. The two positive thing he wrote about Mach E: the great ride and handling and upscale interior he had to quote Ed Loh. He just can't bring himself to write something positive about Ford in his own voice.

It's interesting that Mach E's longest wheelbase didn't result in better usable interior space. That's kind of a recurring theme in a lot of Ford vehicles... for example, Focus always had tight back seat despite similar or longer wheelbase than other compact sedans.
