Sherminator98
I wouldn't call some of these cars "cheap" as the headline of the article states. The strange thing is the Escape and Bronco Sport aren't listed https://www.motor1.com/news/746185/cheap-car-sales-2024/

Size-wise reminds me of my 1st generation CR-V which was a great vehicle. Smaller size can be a lot of fun to drive, and are definitely cheaper on average; though wish so many of them did not use CVT transmissions. On that subject, Interesting cheapest Nissan offers a 5-speed manual. Not for everyone, but at least an option to avoid CVT. Have noticed a trend of manufacturers offering more autos in lieu of CVTs on slightly higher priced models. Regardless, these basic and smaller vehicles offer much value. akirby
What did you expect when car prices went up? The question is whether they made any money selling cheap vehicles.
Rick73
Are many of these vehicles much different than Ford selling Maverick starting at $20k a few years ago? The cheaper ones are smaller than Maverick, and appear built more basic. If Ford turned a profit on early Mavericks, then many of these could be profitable as well. Basic small sedans under $25k doesn’t seem that much of a stretch.
danglin
I know that Maverick is a "truck", but it is built on the Escape/Bronco Sport platform, and if you add those sales, that trio just topped 400K.

Basic small sedans under $25k doesn’t seem that much of a stretch. It is a stretch because the sedan market is shrinking and has lots of competition with rebates, removing pretty much any way of making a profit. The Maverick has one other product to compete with and in some trims sells for $40k+ which isn't "affordable" and has little to no incentives on it. That is how it is profitable. Ford isn't flooding the market with 23K entry level Mavericks, going by what I see at different dealerships in my area-they are all over 30k+
Rick73
Many of these Japanese and Korean cars at dealers in my area are closer to $30k, particularly Honda Civic. Basic Nissan Versa with steel wheels and 5-speed manual start at $17,190 MSRP. That’s a different level of affordability. 😀

That is only "cheap" compared to $60,000 pickups and $75,000 large SUVs. The Civic is a nice car - so nice that it appears to be taking a big bite out of Accord sales. The new Civic is the size of the old Accord. Accord is bordering on full size now.

And the reason for that is CAFE Footprint too...they'd make no money on a Civic sized Civic because it have to get 40-50MPG Yet another reason why cars are getting bigger/more expensive. Yea... The last Civic to be fully designed and for sale before CAFE footprint rule came into effect was the 9th gen (2011-2015) and the footprint was about 42 sq ft. If Honda had kept the Civic at the same size, it will have a 60 MPG CAFE target in 2025. Edited January 8 by bzcat
