Why worry about it when an all new model will be out in 3-4 years?

Not everyone wants a hatch and well as for mechanical changes...we'll have to wait and see.

Would you wait 3-4 years if you were in the market for a new car today? Or would you go elsewhere?

Exactly, and this is why Ford might not be around in 3-4 years..

I love how some will dismiss a vehicle as a failure simply because it isn't to them what they want it to be.

The main reasons why the last redesign of the Focus missed the mark, were:

A. Horrible interior redo

B. Boring Jetta-esque (horribly interpreted) exterior

Ford simply needs to continue to tune the D25s for fuel efficency and refinement, and possibly offer up a 5 spd auto and the major complaints have been addressed.

Lets not forget that the Focus still has the capacity to run circles and/or keep up around comparible vehicles from Honda, Nissan (especially), and Hyundai. New for the sake of new doesn't mean crap unless there are major improvements, and that being the case the Cobalt is a great example of what not to do.

well.. now that they are going to offer a coupe I might be interested... I hated the look of the zx3 & 5... looked like overgrown roller skates... I buy small cars for economy ..not for hauling stuff.. thats what the F350 is for. It also looks like the grill is not just a miniture fusion grill but an actual interpitation of the 3 bar theme... could be a good little car...

I could care less if it is c170, C1, C2 or a 94 escort chassis... my escort and tempo did a fine job of getting me back and forth to work everyday. hopefully they were able to get the fuel milage up a little... my brother is very dissappointed in the milage he gets from his '02 sedan...

I'm not in the new car market, I already have a 7 month old Mustang GT. I'm not basing what Ford is doing For ME. I think that fact is alot why people get their panties in a bunch over cars. They expect to cater to every whim they want and then bitch about out on the internet. The car addresses the major issues with the Focus, the poorly done exterior restyle in 2005 and the even worse interior. The US could care less about hatches, unless they are some how connected to a SUV or CUV.

that is bullshit.....that type of reasoning is why we don't have the best small cars sold here like they do in europe....with diesels....if I hear one more time that the us consumer will not buy diesels because of what gm did 20 years ago I will throw up.....the target market for these vehicles were not even born then!

is the focus an improvement....yah....could they of done better...most certainly.

3-4 years is a lifetime in the industry.....something ford no longer has now that the banks are going to lien everything ford has.

Whats the biggest car based market in the USA? Mid-sized sedans, namely the Accord and Camry. Europe and the US are two totally different markets and Diesel in Europe is cheaper to run overall due to taxes on fuel and MPG it gets. Not to mention the US has now the stricticts light duty deisel emissions in the world doesnt help much. For example you can't even buy a light duty diesel in a CARB state, which cuts out nearly 25% of your market.

agree with you about the changing market with the diesel fuel but if the industry had been producing desireable product for the past 10 years like vw's jettas diesel you would of saw alot more cooperation between the oil and automobile industry.

the 4 door sedan market is the largest in the us but how many of them are fleet related-25% maybe. But that is changing-that market size will decline as more vehicles come to market that don't have a category. What would youl call the volvo c30-the mazda 5-the matrix? People want versatility of out their automobile and some companies are moving quicker in offering multiple use vehicles-imo.

"that is BS" No its reality kid.

Anyway, there is not 'zero changes', and hatches are not popular. The ZX3 was a fad car, and now isn't selling. Honda ditched Civic hatches, for one thing, and there is no Toyota hatch compact either.

The C1 hatches look like eggs or old Chevy Citations, and would have bombed.

How much of the small car market is fleet? the same amount or more..so that argument goes out the window.

The C30 is a 25K+ Hatchback, the Mazda5 is a small people mover and the Matrix is just a Corolla station wagon when it boils down to it. Small cars have never been popular in the USA and the vast majority of people who see them look down on them, unless gas is ungodly expensive. Small cars are NOT in any shape or Form, inspirational to own for your typical American car buyer. There is a market for them, but them taking over mid-sized cars just because, is slim to none

I'm thinking maybe the new B car will have a hatch of some sort. Their smaller size seem to merit the need for them. Judging from the offerings there I'm willing to bet Ford will leave the hatchs to the new B car.

I agree with this, with the limited space they offer a hatchback would make the most sense.

From what I understand it doesn't, I could be wrong though

I thought I heard something about the Liberty again being available in the "greenie" states come the '07 fuel regs.

Anyone know more about this for sure? We can't be the only ones who are confused by what the new diesel fuel regs will actually mean to us as consumers.

The interior is so covered up and obscured by window glare that there's no way to make an objective observation. I still don't like the exterior. I think it's going to be as miserable a failure as the current NA focus.

well I am not a kid, but thank you! the point being is people that are buying these vehicles are mostly first or 2nd time buyer's-young-daddy's money, etc.

look at how well toyota is doing with the scion lineup....there best seller is a hatch. The point being-and maybe the focus is in to large of a segment-but the vehicles that are coming to market offer a wide range of versatility and I think ford would be foolish to not recognize that.

I would love to hear some more details about their b car that they previewed the past two days....suprised we have not heard more...where is our insider's???

Do you mean the tC? Cause while it's technically a hatchback, it certainly has coupe written all over it in terms of styling. Hatchback in America is akin to "bargain", while coupes are considered more stylish and sexy. Ford tried to make the hatch sporty and no one bought it. I think they will do much better with a coupe, even though I always found the ZX3 very attractive. I think the new Focus is going to be great looking, but we'll all just have to wait and see.
