They still sell the Lincoln Mark LT down in Mexico. With a new Lincoln truck, they could spread the volume between here and there. Still, I have mixed feelings about a Lincoln truck.

I found this comment interesting:
At least a short time, Ford will be using Mercury for a dumping ground for non-retail cars. They can clear out of the parts they have in inventory and not affect the resale value of Fords.
There is some truth to that statement.
Ford is not a cheap brand, and seems to be moving up market some. This can only make Ford brand cars have higher ROI. They don't need the cheap market.
What are you high?
Yes the Cougar name was put on 4 doors and station wagons, and they were a stain on the brand name. If Ford is not going to make a proper Cougar, then they need not use the name on anything.
So, they named the car after a Ford transmission? Is the C6 and the ATX next? I guess Ford used the car name Cyclone for an engine, and Dodge used an engine name Magnum for a car.. anything is possible!

It's only happened once with the 1974 Mustang II. But you are right, there should be an optional V8. Granted in the future, this will a more expensive option than it is now.
Ford is going to buy it on the cheap. They will use it to replace Mercury.
