Names don't matter? jub? i beg to differ. Id be willing to bet that if the Mustang was called 'Cougar' as was originally intended, it wouldn't have been as successful. Fiesta does sound cheap and no, im not in the target market for this car, nor will i buy one. Not because i have anything against the car, in fact, i like it alot but cars that small just dont interest me. (that and im a big fat guy) I want the car to do well, and if its as good as its shaping up to be, then it should.

Fiesta still sounds cheap. Verve sounds much better and also gets away from the stupid "F" name scheme that Ford STILL cant seem to get away from.

Does the name even matter? The Camry would probably still sell in droves if it was called "El Shitto", because it's the PRODUCT that matters, not the freakin' name.

Well, in Camry's case, the "T" badge and "Camry" name sell the thing.

Hmmmm, maybe Ford should put a modified "T" and call Fusion "Camrie" to spur sales? :hysterical: That'd be an absolute disgrace. :banghead:

Yes, but in this case, Fiesta has been established for some time now in Europe, thus the Fiesta name sticks for the world. And I agree with that.....that the product should have one name globally.

I'm still curious as to what will happen with the Fusion and Mondeo names once their product lines are merged. In that case, I think it'd be best to have separate names. Ford switching names on another product wouldn't go over too well in the US, IMO.....along with the fact that Fusion is a competative entry and will only be more competitive w/ its MCE coming up......it would make people think Ford has failed again, so they're starting over. Toyota didn't kill the Camry and Corolla badges when nobody bought them decades ago, and look at where they are today.

I think its a non-issue, its lot easier to change out a .25 cent piece of plastic thats a name badge then to change sheetmetal. Remember, savings comes form sharing platforms, not names. The Fusion nameplate is getting esablished, and Ford (well Mullaly) has said the days of switching car names just to switch them (well to make it sound all new like Detroit has done the past 30 years) is over with, since the Japanese have kept their names for that long and now they are household names. Also keep in mind the First Gen Civics, Corralas and what not where turkeys too...

Hey... at least they didn't call it Aspire. Fiesta may be a tough sell if its made in Mexico. Kinda a blatent reminder its a NAFTA baby.

Vote for Obama if you hate Mexico so much. He wants to get rid of NAFTA.

Obama on Hilary and NAFTA:

Her supporting NAFTA didn’t give jobs to the American people. Her supporting a bankruptcy bill made it harder for people to get out of debt that didn’t help them with the bills that were stacking up on their desks.

oh boo hoo.

Fiesta is/has been nothing but good for me. I owned an 80 model, one of the last sent to the US. Tough little car. I had over 100K on it within three years. Most of them flat out. That car had the 1600 cc Kent engine in it. I traded it in on a F-100 in 1984. By then the odometer was reading 125K or thereabouts. I looked sharp too!

This new Fiesta is interesting to me. My wifes' Escort is over 120K now, should be ready to trade off in a year or two. A Fiesta may just be the ticket. She likes to zip around town in a small car. The Fiesta would be smaller and easier for her to drive about. She hates to buy gas. The Escort is no hog, but this new car looks to do better than the Escort. Maybe the ticket!

I concur with that. We had an '80 Fiesta S in our family, we all learned how to drive stick - and back in those days it was Ford's best performance car! Quick, reliable, and tough (though it liked to warp rotors rather quickly). German built with that bulletproof British iron "kent" 1.6 great little car! While the Fiesta has not always been the best small car in Europe, it is usually the most reliable and its good to see this blue chip pedigree come back in the states!

-back to the LTD, Grand Marquis, Crown Victoria name theme-

How many people in the target demographic have even heard of a Ford Fiesta in the US? When i said it sounded cheap, thats what it sounds like to a younger person (im 26). Now figure the average buyer for the car wont be an enthusiest that knows that Ford even makes different cars overseas and what are you left with? A nameplate that brings back warm fuzzy memories for the few that probably wont buy the car anyway, and a new segment of buyers that dont know, and dont get the connection to the older model of car.

Verve>Fiesta

Judging by your past cars, you're not an average 26 year old. Names are kept for marketing. As we get global platforms, I think having the same name for cars in NA and Europe will allow Ford to capitalize on European "superiority" (all Euro Fords are better, right?).

And Verve is way too feminine a name. Perhaps Fiesta aggravates jingoism, but Verve is just awful.

Even taking my past cars into consideration, I think naming a new model Galaxie, MarkIV, Marauder (yes i liked the 03 ones, but i think the name hurt it) and any number of models Ford used to have would be a mistake. I am even starting to think Cougar would be a mistake as its lost most of its cache with a new audience that would associate it with the MN12 models instead of a luxurious alternative to the Mustang.

I dont even think Mondeo, Puma, Ka or S-Max would work here. (the name of course) Falcon worked for the same reasons that Mustang continues to work. Its a nameplate that has been in continuous production for several decades now and has not had the time to fall out of favor with the market. Come back in 10 years and see if Firebird will still be a viable name to use on a production car. There are exceptions, (Challenger, Charger) but they are very very few.

Just to add to the confusion, does anybody know what will become of the Ford Fusion that shares the current Fiesta platform, will this share the same one as the new Fiesta?

AFAIK, not one word has been mentioned. No mules, no spy shots. IIRC, when Ford announced it would be bringing an un-named B-car to NA that there would be a 4x4 of some kind.
