jpd80
Chevy Bolt not on shared architecture, but platform name secret http://www.greencarreports.com/news/...secret-gm-says Despite what would appear to be much misreporting by industry sources, GM says the Chevy Bolt EVdoes not share any elements of those vehicles' small-car architecture, which was developed by its Korean small-car team. "There are no Bolt EV parts tied to the G2 architecture," said lead product engineer Josh Tavel, via e-mail through GM communications. UPDATE: After this article published, GM's Kevin Kelly gave us the following statement that appears to explain the discrepancy: "The Bolt EV program originated on the Gamma architecture, but then grew into its own architecture—even as it maintained the G2 code." I wonder how many or the % of parts by value are shared with Gamma?
sullynd
Sounds a lot like DEW>D2C (In terms of starting with a platform and essentially ending up with a new platform).
akirby
I was completely 100% wrong about the Bolt platform. FTFY

jpd80
Sounds a lot like DEW>D2C (In terms of starting with a platform and essentially ending up with a new platform). A better analogy would be Mustang S197 ---> S550. Some people get hung up on the idea that every new product has to come from a clean sheet design but there's a lot of advantages to using an existing vehicle platform as a starting point. Biker said, I wonder how many or the % of parts by value are shared with Gamma? A true derivative has to share less than 50% of its components with the originator of the platform otherwise its not much better than a top hat change. Bolt it more than just a derivative of Gamma so the share is probably down to 25% or maybe less.. When you change, the body, floor pan, power train, suspension and electrical system all the existing starting points have changed, I suspect the only thing that Bolt has in common with Gamma is the build process. It seems like GM suppliers like LG had a bit of influence in the design of Bolt which is probably why the platform changed so much and was separated from the Gamma family. Gamma was probably a good starting point to evolve the design in the right way and cust months off the development time.
Biker16
GM's investments in EVs, diesels, and platforms that aren't 500lbs overweight is awesome. FTFY
