sullynd
"I think there's about 80 new cars, about 50 used cars, 20 customer cars, some lease returns. I think there were ten of our loaners. Probably four or five million dollars, said Marty Price, co-owner of Highland Park Ford Lincoln. The northern suburbs got hit hard the last few days. I wonder who's insurance covers the customer cars. http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/local/268078100-story

sullynd
Dealership is responsible for customer cars in their care. Yeah, that's what I figured. I wonder how quickly they can replenish thier stock.
fordtech1
Dealership is responsible for customer cars in their care. I would be surprised if the customers cars are the responsibility of the dealership in this case. If the damage is due to dealership neglect then they should be responsible. However, this being an event of nature, I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't. The insurance follows the car. Same as if you have someone borrow the car and wreck it. The insurance follows the car. I'm interested to see how this will play out. This reminds me of accidents that friends of mine have been in, the insurance companies can't pinpoint fault so each person pays for their own car. Situations like parking lot collisions this can happen.
akirby
Good point - I wasn't thinking about it being an act of nature. In that case it probably is the owner's insurance.
carguy
In Michigan no matter what happens to a customer's car and who or what is at fault it is the car owners insurance that covers the car.
akirby
Really? Even if it falls off the lift?
fuzzymoomoo
Really? Even if it falls off the lift? No. I had an incident at a shop with my focus once. Some kid who didn't know how to drive a stick popped the clutch (he said it jumped when he turned the key. Bullshit) with it in gear and hit another customer's car. The shop's insurance covered both cars and I got to drive a sweet f-150 for a week which they also paid for* I'll never go to Belle Tire again. That's the third vehicle in my family they wrecked or had a hand in wrecking by their negligence. They also owe me money still over the aforementioned f-150 that wasn't supposed to cost me anything. ice-capades
Really? Even if it falls off the lift? Years ago, we had a customer's 6-month old Escort GT get totaled when an old lift collapsed. It was one of those old style lifts that were sunk in concrete. The dealership's insurance covered the replacement. It was at the end of the model year and the customer was very difficult and demanded that we replace his car with the exact same car... color, equipment, etc. He actually was a real SOB about the whole thing. As it turned out, his car only had the standard AM/FM Stereo and the only car within a hundred miles had the optional AM/FM Stereo w/Cassette. He was so adamant about getting the exact vehicle replacement that I had the service department swap the radio chassis and he got what he demanded, the exact twin to his car. When he realized that he wasn't getting the AM/FM Cassette listed on the window sticker, I explained to him that had he been more reasonable about the situation, that he'd have gotten the cassette unit at the dealership's expense. People are amazing. At some point you have to realize shit happens. That's life. It's a car not hearts and lungs. It amazes me the society we live in with the entitlement issues and the complete loss of rationale.
