silvrsvt
My parents got an Edge SEL as a loner since their 02 EB Explorer tranny went south again less then a year after getting replaced along with the rear diff this same time last year... Anyways...I've been thinking about getting an Edge down the road as my first "adult" car since all my cars have been "performance" type cars (86 Escort GT, 98 Mustang GT, 02 SVT Focus, 06 Mustang GT) They got a Creme Brulee or Dune Pearl SEL, which is pretty unflattering for the Edge IMO I got in and the first thing that struck me was how crappy the plastics where in it, the same as my Mustang (which looks better with the IUP and some dash dressing)...my mom even commented that it looked plasticty. The Brown trim pieces looked really cheap...they where shiny with no texture to them. There was no "soft touch" plastics what so ever on it. The Center console was kinda disapointing, same switch gear as my Mustang, down to the same radio and buttons for the info center on the IP. The IP itself was very sharp and I liked it. The Seats where very comfortable, but I would have liked a little bit more of a bucket to them so I feel like I'm sitting in them instead of on top of them. Driving impressions: I've driven nothing but sticks since I started to drive, but the 6 Speed shifted really well and the Edge has pretty damn good pickup out of it from a stop and from 20-50 MPH range. The ride was very nice and smooth and it handled pretty well considering it is an CUV. I know there has been alot of bitching about the stopping length of the Edge, but I never felt that it had any issues with it taking excessive space to stop. Some suprises: the Edge is pretty damn wide, I pulled it into my parents garage and it barely cleared the door in...I had about 2 inches to spare on each side, my mom said it was wider then their Explorer. Comments from non-driving enthusiasts, namely my parents...Besides the pastictly comment from my mom, she said it was ok. My dad, a former Ford Employee, said he wasn't all that impressed by it and that it was just ok. My rating: I give it a 8.5 out of 10...the biggest issue is the interior plastic materials, I was expecting soft touch plastics in it and well it was nothing but hard plastics. Besides that it rides and drives pretty good and I can see myself getting one, but I prob won't be on the market for one till after the Mid-cycle improvements...if Ford does something like what its doing the Flex with the Edge, Its going to be really hard not to get an Edge. I have to agree on the cheap feeling plastics. My Fusion has soft plastics all over, I love it... The edge has great road presence... 02MustangGT
I sat in a new Edge at a dealership and shared the same thoughts in a previous thread. The plastics are cheap and hard. Then someone, can't remember who, responded with oh, well that's really something to complain about. Yeah, well, it is, the plastics are unexceptable for a $30k vehicle. Other than that, the Edge is quite a nice vehicle.

That's what I can't understand, the Fusion is $10,000 cheaper and they used a soft composite interior! Why in the hell would they not give their prodigy crossover the same treatment! Michael Reynolds
That's what I can't understand, the Fusion is $10,000 cheaper and they used a soft composite interior! Why in the hell would they not give their prodigy crossover the same treatment! Because someone thought it would have been wise to duplicate F-150/Explorer grade materials in a vehicle that is supposed to appeal to an entirely different market. The plastics aren't that bad, but the interior sure deserves some refinement. And why isn't Ford putting ambient lighting in this, but offering it in the Focus? Well thats the strange thing...my Mom has an EB Explorer and my Sister has a 06 Explorer Limited and plastics in them aren't nothing great to write home about either. I haven't sat in a Fusion for an extended period of time, but from what I've seen the the door panels look cheap to me (esp in the light beige color), since it all in one color. As for ambient lighting...the next upgrade for the Edge is an IUP like the Mustang (that should be interesting) but I'll assume that ambient lighting will come with the refresh, keeping in mind that the Focus is all new for 2008

O.K. here we go again, My wifes Eddie Bauer Explorer that she traded for the Edge cost $16,000 more and had a plastic interior. I bought it sight unseen. It also had nothing identifying it from a stocker other than the tiny words Eddie Bauer in the rear name plate. it wasn't even on the boor badges let alone in the pinstripe, Embroidered in the head rests, floor mats or anywhere else you use to get it. I don't think that it is worth $46,000 for a plastic truck, and you can disagree but the car buying public is not going to rally behind you. As far as the Edge interior design I think they did a great job, I just wish they had and do use better materials! Hydro
That's wierd, we looked at the Explorers first and immediately walked. Then we swung by the Edge's and bought it on the spot. The whole cabin felt "secure or comfy" hard to explain. The Explorer just didn't offer as many do-dads for the same price (panoramic roof, powertrain, interior layout, etc..) . I like the Edge's butcher handle shifter, vents, gauges and seating vs. Explr. It's seems like Ford is letting the Explr rot and fall to the wayside and let x-overs take over. Why aren't they putting the 3.5L in the Explorer? Once this motor gets a few miles it sounds throaty and has some kick (ours has 2,000 miles and rips, although a tad bit of torque steer). A Nissan Moron-o had the luxery of getting eaten by me last night. He was so pissed kept cussing at me, and I just waved and smiled, did it three times from each light just to let him know it wasn't a fluke. Furious1Auto
OK so the point you were trying to get at was what? There is a $16,000 price difference and the Fusion's interior is made of better material, Also the Eddie Bauer package has lost it's value and status. RichardJensen
I think ambient lighting is a late availability item on the Edge.
