New car

Alright well to sum it up I have some great opportunies coming my way when I graduate in May. If you were to decide which vehicle would you be most likely to purchase which of these would it be?

I've already got an 07 lariat 150 and I would like to get a second car.

2008 Edge SEL Plus AWD

2008 Explorer Eddie Bauer V-8

2008/09 Mustang GT

2008/09 Lincoln MKZ

What are you opinions on each and which one would you want to buy? This car would likely be a daily driver which is why the mustang might not be the best choice but then again I have the 150 for getting me through the snowstorms

Thanks for your input!

Just graduated? :reading: MUSTANG GT OBVIOUSLY! :happy feet:

If you really needed an all weather commuter then a GM-LS has worked for me for 10 years now.

The problem with the MKZ and Mustang is that their refreshed versions are coming soon next year, personally I would have taken one of the formers. But since they're getting a refresh, I'd go with the Edge.

Explorer? The bland looks really ruins it, plus it doesn't have an interior that can make up for that (08 Expedition).

Graduating college? or high school?

Does your chosen profession require personal transportation for in-the-field work? Ex. field researcher, engineer, architect, real estate?

Are you going into a 9-5er? Do you expect to take clients, peers or management to lunch?

Also, what kind of commute are you looking at? Do you live in Chicago were potholes outnumber road surface? Or do you live in an area with lots of well taken care of, winding, curvy roads? You mentioned snow, is that a lot of snow or only occasional?

Lastly, what kind of driving do you like? Is driving an A-B thing or is it a way for you get your ya's-ya's out?

If you like performance, A Mustang GT or Lincoln MKZ AWD would serve you well.

If you need a field work car, an Explorer or Edge may do the trick.

Taking clients out to lunch? A Lincoln MKZ impresses in many ways. An Edge would work too.

An Explorer or Edge should haver tough suspensions that are better on rough roads.

If snow/ sleet/ rain frequent to your area, a Mustang with its solid rear may not be a wise choice.

If you can, try to rent each of these vehicles for a coupla days to see how they fit you.

And finally, are you going to require 'family' transportation any time soon? 4 doors are better there.

I'll share this; when I was out of school, I had an Escort that my friends & I named the little blue war pony.

I took it all over California. It was my best friend. But I always regretted not buying a convertible Mustang instead.

Good luck Kenwowski!

You've already got a truck, so obviously you need something to play with.

'09 GT.

graduating college, live in the NE, my commute will be around a half hour each way, driving is in no way A to B for me and yes I get my jollies from it, will likely have to take clients around but I will have a company car by the time I need to do that...

I think I am talking myself into a 09 GT mustang here

Easy choice for me. From 1991 to 2005 I drove nothing but V8 Mustangs for a car. I appreciate the opportunity I had to drive those cars while I had them. Enjoy yourself now. Later down the road, you'll be looking at MKZs and Edges more than you probably should be now. You'll be considering your wife's preferences and what you need for a family. For a daily driver, get the Mustang GT with the 5 speed automatic. Plenty of power and no need to shift. Of course, if you want the full experience, you'd probably want the manual transmission, but the auto will make a better daily driver.

Wow. When I graduated college buying a new car was never on my radar screen. However, when the time came I needed a vehicle that was presentable to clients, roomy for carrying items & people, comfortable for daily driving, relatively fuel efficient, and sporty enough for some fun. My choice: Mazda6s with a manual transmission. And I wish, wish, wish I still had it.

While I love the Mustang I could never deal with the SRA in everyday life. The MKZ is nice, but eh - it's not really what you need. Edge/Explorer/Taurus X/etc. seem like overkill since you already have a truck.

Of course I have to mention the Dave Ramsey/Clark Howard/Suze Orman choice - drive the truck and invest the money!

I understand the Suze Orman point there but being that the truck is paid off and that fact that I get reallllllllly good prices on ford vehicles makes that mustang look so appealing right now I also understand some of the other comments posted that this may be the only time I can really drive a mustang and not have to worry about baby seats or room for the in-laws

Are you serious with this thread? Who cares what our opinions are about these 4 cars, you're the one that has to live with the decision. Be a man and buy the car you want based on your own decision, not what a bunch of guys on that internet that you don't even know have to say. Hell if you left it up to me you'd be walking because I wouldn't pick any of your choices. lol

Well I am partial to the Explorer because I believe it is the true swiss army knife vehicle. It blends a car and truck together and it's uses are unlimited. However since you already own an F150 I would go with a Lincoln MKZ. I really like the MKZ, it is a sharp car. The reason I would choose it over a Mustang is because of rear seat room and it is available with AWD. That is my opinion anyhow.

Why isn't the MKX on your short list? I have an MKZ and MKX and I'll take the X over the Z any day! Of all cars in the FoMoCo lineup, only the MKX is the one I desired the most. That may change to MKS in a year, but we'll see how dowdy it turns out to be.

I was wondering that too, but after thinking about it, given his other options, it may be out of his price range. If MKX were on that list, it'd probably be my choice too.

The price difference is less than 100/month for a fully loaded MKX which is substantially better than the Edge (although I can't honestly say that since I've never driven the Edge). If the Edge drives like the MKX, that would be amazing but I gather it does not based on the reviews. The big selling point for the MKX is the interior, otherwise I think the Edge and MKX are equally handsome.

The MKZ is more sporting, but the Edge is no more sporting than an MKX (although probably a little less so due to the more dampened ride and handling).

Actually, a big selling point for me between the MKZ and MKX would be the Z's HID headlamps, which are not available on MKX (this is important to me). Fortunately, I got over this little omission after discovering far more substantive advantages. The other advantage to the MKZ are the wheels which are genuine chrome alloy, not the awful chrome glad hubcaps they are using on the MKX.

I'm confused, are you saying that what you're paying per month is less than $100 off the Edge's per month payment?

I haven't driven an MKX, but have driven an Edge. It drives really nicely, very smooth ride, pretty good acceleration, I didn't notice any braking issues on our test drive (which are usually longer than a normal one b/c we've known a guy at our dealer for years and he lets us take the cars by ourselves, our Edge drive wasnt too long though, b/c we drove the first one they had in, so it needed to be at the dealer for customers to look at)

I like the MKX interior a lot.

I am disappointed that the MKX doesn't have HID headlights. While the chrome-clad aluminum wheels are annoying they dont really bother me, but I may feel differently if I owned a vehicle w/ them.

That would certainly do away with any snowstorm capability.

Blackhorse....easy easy....I posted this topic because I value the opinions of the memebers on this board. Sure many people come on here and post nonsense but many offer great insight that I had not even thought of.

Borg, the MKX is not on my list because it is a bit more pricey when optioned the way I like then what I was looking for however I agree it is a fantastic vehicle.

Being that I do have the pickup I think this boils down to whether I want a sedan or coupe. The MKZ and mustang are two very different cars but they both have thier benefits. I guess I will wait and see what the 09' versions of each look like when they debut at upcoming car shows.

I'm also happy to report that several friends (also graduating) are choosing Ford products as their first new cars and trucks out of college. I've seen a drammatic change in opinion in regard to Ford over the past few years. People are finally starting to see the value in Ford's new products.

Compared to the MKZ or EDGE (Fully Loaded), I am paying no more than $100/month more for an MKX. Actually, I'm paying less for an MKX because the MKZ has a high mileage lease.

The MKX is the first car I've owned in a very long time that doesn't have HIDs. It was sickening at first, driving at night with all this ugly yellow light in front of me, but I got over it surprisingly quickly thanks partly to the adaptive lights ;).

Replace the stock bulbs with Ultra Whites or Silverstars...makes a pretty big difference on halogen projectors.
