Say goodbye to the HEMI

I'm not a Chrysler fan *at all* but I do want to see the company rebound and become successful again. Walter Chrysler and the Dodge brothers are probably spinning in their graves somewhere after seeing all the mess this company has gone through.

 

I think that the Hemi name brought people back to Chrysler that left for Ford and GM a long time ago. Even if they come out with new technology, why not just keep the Hemi name for that brand recognition? Call it the "all new Hemi" and then the company is seen as being innovative?

 

Oh right, we're talking about Chrysler here. Oh well.

Did you guys ever stop to consider that if a police department mandates a V8 engine that Dodge will put a V8 engine in the Charger. He didn't say that the whole company was dropping V8's altogether. I can't imagine a V6 only Dodge Ram. If there is a demand for the V8 they'll have one. He just said they were dropping the HEMI, I would assume for some other version of a V8 power plant. That's probably not a bad idea as the HEMI, while revolutionary for it's day, is pretty old now and there are better engine designs out there.

This is absolutely true. The Chrysler 4.7 is supposed to be a very good engine and I'm sure they can do something to get more HP out of it. The HEMI name did bring people back to MoPar. The marketing stratedgy was excellent. By admitting the HEMI has faults and that they are going to do something about it is a smart move. Besides, any company will listen to their law enforcment customers to keep them happy. Chrysler and even AMC made models that were no longer available to the public to satisfy contract needs. Of course there will be V-8 engines available for Chrysler with all the pick-ups, Jeeps, suv's and sedans that require them.

I noted that for the effort more so than the 4% gain. In the truck, the Hemi is going to get worse gas mileage than a car. For the record, the Charger 5.7 w/ MDS gets about the same mileage as a Crown Vic. That certainly means it is rated higher than the Tahoe and only marginally less than the Impala. I don't really see the Charger as being superior to the Crown Vic as a police car, but its the best alternative available as I see it.

 

As for the mileage in the Ram, I've said it before that from the get-go the Ram has show comparable fuel economy to that of the 5.4L in the F-150...even in '03-'04 without the MDS. The exception being that the Hemi has always produced better performance and more horsepower than the Triton. Now, the gearing of the '09 F-150 may improve those numbers to be better than the Ram. We'll just have to wait and see, however its pretty much assumed that the Hemi will still make considerably more horsepower and notably more torque.

What we must remember is that HEMI is a name, a trademark that Chrysler uses to brand their highest output V8s. It does not describe a specific trait, it is a label. The current engine that is badged HEMI will go out of production some day, but that does not mean that they will not use the label HEMI on something else.

Do you even know what a hemi is?? Yeah they'll slap "hemi" on the next 4 cyl DOHC engine they make because it's just a label and doesn't describe a specific trait! :censored:

 

And as far as the hemi's milage, if you think the hemi is anything but a pig on fuel your an idiot!

Two guys I know bought them when new and couldn't afford to fill them twice a week driving to work. Another guy I don't really know said his (2006) is so hard on fuel he's selling it. I tried to push ford but he was noncommittal.

While the "Hemi" name actually meant something on the originals, its meaning has lost all relevence on the new engines. They do not have fully hemispherical combustion chambers. MOD motors are more "Hemi" than the current "Hemi". It's nothing more than a marketing gimmick today, an effective one, but still a gimmick.

I know you. You and I have different views on the Ram and I enjoy the discussions. You speak from the satisfied customer POV, while I speak from the mechanic POV. Its good conversation. The cylinder deactivation is a load of beans from any manufacturer. You are shutting down cylinders when the vehicle if at its peak efficiency...car or truck. Any "assist" to reduce the necessity of the engine while under load is the real ticket. Moving 3500lbs+ of mass from stop to 65mph kills you.

I might be mistaken, but I think Ford was one of the last companies to use a true hemi head on their car. My mom's Ford Escort has that hemi head to it. That was what I thought was the last major production engine to have full hemi. This Escort is still the only vehicle that survived the infamous bumper crash tests with $0 damage.

 

Mom's Escort is still humming away with 150k+ miles on it. Outside of a couple of gasket replacments and the usual, this Hemi rockS!

427 SOHC of the 60s was a true hemi head. Boss 9 was a semi-hemi

Please note the difference. Back in the 50s and 60s Chrysler had the Hemi. Big H, little emi. These were the engines that had the hemispherical combustion chamber, as opposed their "wedge" engines. It was a descriptive term.

Today they have the HEMI (all caps). The 5.7 and its higher performance variant are named HEMI. The combustion chamber may have a few hemispherical curves somewhere, but it is not hemispherical. It is their trademark, they can slap it on anything they want to.

Well, yeah I guess I do speak as a satisfied Ram owner but that's really all I have to offer opinion-wise. Of course, I am not familiar with the MDS system, because as you probably already know, the '03 didn't come equipped with it. Frankly from the EPA estimates, it doesn't seem that the MDS does that much for the truck, because I'd guess the Hemi really isn't that inefficient as far as a truck engine goes. Its just like you said, pushing that mass up to speed is what get you and if you do a lot of stop and go, your mileage drops.

 

Of course, on the other hand, aerodynamics is the other enemy of most trucks and you run into that at about 70 mph on the Ram. I guess better gearing can help there some, but my mileage takes a considerable drop above 70. It seems most efficient at about 60-65 mph.

Yup. The HEMI is an old 340/360 block with a 'double-wedge' chamber with canted valves. It's not a (392/426) Hemi.

Didn't Chrysler have a 4cyl. hemi in a K-car variant or in some past Mitsu model?

 

 

DING! DING! DING! The K-Cars that used the 2.6l Mistubishi engine had a HEMI badge on the fender. Some of Chryslers captive imports that were powered by the same engine had a HEMI badge on the back of the car. At least that engine had a hemispherical combustion chamber.

The new Hemi is a pretty good engine. Not an update of the LA 318/360 block, but it does share some dimensions. What I think is funny about this thread is that some here think Chrysler's statement about the Hemi not being the primary engine of Chrysler's future is somehow funny, that it proves Chrysler is lame and weak, ect.. Well, I got news for you. Just as the Hemi is not the engine of Chrysler's future, the Boss won't be the engine of Ford's future either. The Energy Bill will RADICALLY change what most of you will be driving 10 years from now. The Hemi will probably still be around, powering the HD Rams and nothing else. Same goes for the 3V 5.4 Triton and the larger GM LS engines. The Boss? I was really hoping Ford would finally build this one, but I now have to admit it is going to be really tough to make a business case for it at this time.

i am seeing a lot more Chargers than Tahoes with a police paint job, actually i see more Explorers in police outfit than i see Tahoes

 

I see more police Chargers than Tahoes and see more police Expeditions than Tahoes. I see more police Durangos than Tahoes.

 

I saw my first Charger taxi cab the other day as well.
