Oops, guess some already said this.

That is why BMW developed the MINI.

I quote myself... and edit myself...:

As far as MINI goes, BMW continued the project when they let go of Rover, who had originally developed the car. No extra platform development took place on BMW's part.

Well it makes a point about small luxury cars: just because they're small, it doesn't mean that the door and sideglass has to be the same cheap quality. It has to be better, if anything, for fit-and-finish "look".

Here's a quicky re-do, sort of flush side glass. Notice how much better the car looks, IMHO, compared to the heavy Focus window-frames. Small luxury means luxury construction.

you posted the 83 Cimmaron.....but I was thinking more of the Caddy Caterra. Now THAT was a failure.

Lincoln first needs to shed its old people car image like Cadillac did, and THEN worry about sporty smallish cars. If you would have told me 10-15 years ago that Caddilac was going to have a monster like the CTS-V I would have laughed in your face. That brand definitely came back from the brink. I'm not sure the Lincoln ship is turning fast enough. They need something so 180 that people look at it and go "THAT's a Lincoln?" Kinda like that Saturn commercial.....except the internet only version. "That's a fucking Lincoln...? Shiiit."

A FWD Lincoln sounds like they are into building cheap and chearful nasty & tacky cars. All the quality cars use RWD, looks like more lost sales down the road for Lincoln.

What's up with Ford lately they seem to have a lot of cash to burn & waste, even the new RS looks a big loser in Auto Express today, nobody will buy or touch the RS with a shitty FWD only version, Evo & Scoobie AWD sales will rocket the Focus will flop why even bother doing it as nobody will buy it?

Where exactly are all these "lost sales" for Lincoln? They are in a more stable position now, FWD cars be damned, than they have been in well over a decade.

Umm...look where that 1/3 came from. Almost entirely from Navigator and Town Car, two products with predictably lower sales volumes. MKS and MKT will more than makeup for that drop off.

Damn that looks incredible, shame on them for making it FWD, that things gonna have zero traction off the line and out of turns, I don't care how good the LSD is, there's only so much power you can send to the front wheels before they lose grip.

At that power level they are competing with the AWD STi's and Evo's, of course AWD adds more weight, you make up for that by adding power which the car can then handle. Hopefully the next gen focus gets AWD so they have no excuses. It's pretty stupid too when you consider that over here the Fusion has AWD, the Taurus has AWD, etc. And those cas don't even have the power to use it, it's for bad weather/low traction conditions. Yet for an all out performance model like the RS, they stick with FWD? Stupid. It'll be interesting to see who converts one to AWD first by swapping in a Kuga transaxle..

A. Lincoln is not a luxury car builder. This is a fantasy of Ford enthusiasts. In reality, they build nice Fords.

B. Lincoln needed a nice compact about 5 years ago. This was a terrific idea as gas broke 2 bucks a gallon, now it is a necessity. Most Lincolns aren't actually $60K BMW-Jaguar competitors. Guys like Joe Sherlock don't even look at Lincolns. They need a mid-market compact, and they need it yesterday.

A compact Lincoln will not fly. The MKZ is as small of a car as Lincoln can sell. One of Lincoln's hallmark traits is being roomy, and a compact Lincoln would make as much sense as a Ferrari limousine.

Lincoln-Mercury DOES need a compact vehicle, and this would be perfect to design and sell under the MERCURY nameplate... hence why they need to stick around. Ford has a very nice range of B and C cars, which could be dressed up inside and out, given a super-smooth optional engine, and thus have the tactile nature to go head to head with premium compacts like Mini. Fiesta, Focus, Reflex, and EcoSport could all be made into very impressive Mercury models.

Next up would be a compact RWD sedan to share with Mazda, but that's a product for another day.

Don't tell the Ford enthusiasts this, they will stop buying Lincolns. If Ford builds a Lincoln Focus they will believe you and stop buying Lincolns.

What Lincoln is, is more a matter of perception, than anything. If you want to sell Lincolns as a Luxury car, it has too look and act as a luxury car. Lexus can do it with a small car, but Ford can not. Lincoln needs to stick to larger cars and more RWD cars.

To develop a Focus Lincoln would cost a lot of money that Ford does not have. They already build a luxury version of the Focus, it is the Volvo S40. Just sell it Lincolns dealerships as a Volvo.

Throw a Lincoln logo on it, put different wheels under it and away you go. Kind of like Saab with the Trailblazer.

I would think that Volvo and Lincoln would appeal to different people. It would be confusing to the customer to use the Lincoln name on a vehicle designed for Volvo buyers. It would be better for people to go to there favourite dealer and buy the brand within that dealership that matches their needs and personality.

I love hearing this "Lincoln is not a luxury car" bullshit from people who have never owned Lincolns.

Historically, Lincoln was considered a luxury car. The question is whether Lincoln can build a car that fulfills the same needs that a Lexus fulfills.
