2 cents....techs are charging $90 an hour....thats 16 hrs of work, and as high tech as cars are becoming, and now we have eco-boost, I personally would purchase a warranty....probably a 7yr 100k...and I literally WORK at a dealer, previously i may not have, but the crap they are putting on cars lately is space shuttle like, AND expensive to fix/ replace. That said i have the utmost confidence in Fords depepndability as well....and I would rather fork over $1500 bux than have to revert pleading, berating, whining WOE IS ME posts on a BON thread......

The shops, dealer and independent alike might be charging $90.00 or so per hour but I can guarantee you the "techs" won't get anything near that dollar figure.

sorry...I should have stated Dealers are charging $90 an hour...shame on me, I'm so embarassed....the shame, oh, THE SHAME....

Just like every service industry. Ahh, if only I could get a decent-sized chunk of the $125/hour my company charges for my consulting services. :(

The average consumer can not shell out $3k for a tranny, $12K for a diesel engine, or $6K for Hybrid brake systems.

It make more sense for them to add $30 to the monthly payment and hedge their bet.

That's the example I use. If you can't afford a $3K repair then buy the warranty and finance it with the vehicle so you're only paying a little bit each month.

OTOH - I see an awful lot of folks who want to plunk down $1500 CASH for an extended warranty right before the factory warranty runs out. I say if you can afford that then you can afford to self-insure yourself.

1 jobcan cost several thousand.....so whos better off in that instance?

4x4 auto hubs (F150)

rear climate control (Taurus X, Flex)

Transmission (all)

ETAC head unti (any luxury trim level)

oh, too many repairs that cost many thousands. Basically if you buy any vehicle mid-trim or higher, its a good idea.

On the fence on the extended warranty thing.....

My Experience - 1997 Mustang Cobra, took the warranty. Had a couple rear seals go (one of which took the whole rear end- didn't notice it until it was singing like a Church Choir) and a sensor and a few other things - I think I made out on the rear alone.

1998 Escort (wife's) - tranny was shifting weird and the dealer replaced something - next thing we know the thing was slipping and such. New tranny. I think it helped there as well.

2000 Explorer - no extended warranty. By 58k the tranny was toast, by 60k the engine was rattling cold. $2k + later I kicked myself for not getting it. The engine rattling was a known problem with that SOHC engine.

2003 Escape - extended warranty - oil pan gasket and A/C compressor all paid for by the warranty

2004 Infiniti G35 - no warranty. at 68k, the AC stopped working. $1300 and a new condenser, AC line, and Body Control Module later I had A/C. at 80k I may be looking at an intermittent MAF issue ($300 for the sensor alone). Wish I had the warranty.

I maintain all my cars well - by the books, oil @ 3k, follow the maintenance schedule and there have been issues. When I didn't have the warranty, I wished I had it and when I had it I didn't worry. Probably worked about even.....

Update: Ford has helped me with the repair, and I am happy with the attitude and service at the corporate level. I am still not happy with the particular dealer, but people in this thread have pointed out some reasons why the dealer may not help in these situations. Still, I will likely go to a different dealer in the future.

People mentioned good reasons for getting an extended warranty, and I guess with the increase in complexity and expense of cars, it may be worthwhile.

Some people on this thread indicated that they thought that I was unnecessarily complaining about my situation. I respectfully disagree. People around Texas are constantly telling me that foreign cars are better quality than US cars and seem to be convinced that the San Antonio-made Toyota Tundra is just as all-American as any other car. I constantly defend Ford and point to the JD Powers quality surveys of the past several years. However, having to admit to a $6,000 repair on a 3 1/2 year old car made my arguments lose all credibility. I fully understand that this problem is likely a rare one. Still, once people see one example of something happen, they often make the mistake of thinking it's a common scenario, especially if it fits their preconceived notions.

At least now, I can tell my co-workers and friends that my car had a rare problem, Ford cared enough of their customers to foot part of the bill, and I was able to get the repaired for a reasonable amount of money.

I have also learned that the same parts on the hybrid Fusion will cost much less to replace than on the hybrid Escape.

I am glad things worked out to your satisfaction...unfortunately sometimes dealers have their hands tied...

Thanks. I wish the dealer could have taken the time to explain to me what they could and couldn't do and what Ford could and couldn't do. This particular dealer wasn't great about even returning a call.

Despite the fact that they didn't serve me well, I do have sympathy for them. I know that dealers across the country are hit hard by the slump in auto sales which probably causes them to be understaffed and less able to do anything financially to help customers.
