LSFan00
Link: Gummint Thinking: The Obama administration and the old management at General Motors (who mismanaged GM into bankruptcy) are now busy creating a New GM. The government wants The New General to make small cars. But most GM small cars have been crap, except the ones made at NUMMI - the joint venture between General Motors and Toyota to build vehicles in the United States. It is one of the most productive manufacturing operations in North America. In the true gummint spirit of No-Good-Left-Behind, Obama-GM Motors is not sure about continuing the NUMMI joint venture. The NUMMI plant in Fremont, California has been turning out small cars for GM for over 25 years. These cars - Chevrolet Nova, Geo Prism, Pontiac Vibe - have been awarded the highest reliability ratings of any American-badged American-made small cars. And they're made by UAW workers. They are the only worth-a-damn little cars GM offers. This is the kind of mindless logic which prevails at Obama-GM Motors. It is similar to the thinking at GAZ (Gorky Automobile Works), the Soviet car company that - in the 1950s - gave the world the Pobeda and the Volga. Like the old GAZ, the New GM is not a car company; it's a government-operated jobs program. Again, this is not a competitor Ford will really have to worry much about, any longer, IMHO. LSFan00
Not the 70's one, but I don't recall the early 90's version being well or poorly rated. It just struck me as "forgettable" at the time.
Hoser768
The Nova was pretty much a Corolla with a bow tie slapped on. :boring:

I recall seeing some "flashback" article awhile back that showed how truckloads of 80's Novas had to be sent back to GM due to the number of defects they had upon arrival at dealerships. There were no early '90s Novas. NUMMI made Novas from '85 - '88.
atomcat68
There were no early '90s Novas. NUMMI made Novas from '85 - '88. That is correct. When the Geo brand was born the Nova became the Prizm.

630land
Nobody was buying the NUMMI cars with GM names on them, they assumed were inferior. The source is heavily biased, and assumes that the Vibe, Nova, Prizm were hits, but were not. And, the author claims that we cant help industry since its 'socialism'. But NO PROBLEM pouring $$$ to Communist China to make our cheap 'toys'!!!!!

RichardJensen
Be afraid, very afraid. Oh fiddlesticks. You think Obama wants to flush billions away on Ford too? You think the Dems want to enter the 2010 election cycle with the perception that they FORCED a comparatively healthy Ford into bankruptcy by giving Chrysler and GM grotesquely inappropriate assistance in the MARKETPLACE? But NO PROBLEM pouring $$$ to Communist China to make our cheap 'toys'!!!!! that's funny, because dealers were quick to tell buyers that the Vibe was a rebadged Toyota. I've also never seen the Vibe as deeply discounted as the other GM products. I have no sales stats, but I would assume the GM managed to sell their allotment with a reasonable markup (due to lack of cash on the hood)

It's one thing to use the term Government Motors, or even Obama Motors, but really, President of the UAW? Last I checked, that was still Ron Gettlefinger. 630land
Well, Republicans just wanted GM to go BK and the whole UAW to be fired, with no benefits. But now crying about thier rich dealership buddies losing stores. [They will lose their discounts from dealer lobby] Oh, and GOP Sen from TN whining about Spring Hill closing? What and have those UAW bums still geting paid??? Cant have it all for one side and not the others. Edited June 5, 2009 by 630land

How can one make a statement, and then say "I have no stats"??
retropia
I bought a new Geo Prizm made at NUMMI. I was able to buy it as a discount, but not as steep a discount as other GM cars with similar MSRPs. It was every bit as reliable as a comparable Toyota. The Prizm never sold particularly well, whether with a Geo or Chevy brand. Neither brand had the Toyota cachet. I suspect GM didn't make much money on them, because they had to cost more to build than, say, a Cavalier, but they couldn't charge Corolla prices because it didn't have the Toyota name. Changing the GM NUMMI product to the Vibe was an attempt to make it more profitable, except GM discovered no one would pay Toyota prices for a Pontiac, either. NickF1011
You don't seriously think Ron can make a decision without asking for permission first? Sure he can. It's not like the UAW itself has taken government bailouts. The only thing that has really backed the UAW into a corner is public opinion and the fact that they must now deal with a bankrupt GM and Chrysler. How can one make a statement, and then say "I have no stats"?? 'scuse me... when talking about the Vibe within the GM umbrella, why would you compare to a non-GM product. When you saw a Vibe with $3000 on the window, how much was on the window of the Cobalt and Malibu? A heck of a lot more. I have never, ever seen the Vibe discounted as heavily as the Cobalt/G5 or Malibu/G6 And my observations are based on looking at newspaper ads and visiting showrooms. Which is why I qualified the statement as saying I had no hard evidence in the form of a bullshit internet link If you want to argue, don't be a putz about it, read my post first meathead.
