elle
This is my first post here, so please be gentle with me if there is already a topic here somewhere that addresses my questions. Also, know that I am not a true car enthusiast so if I seem a little uneducated about cars in general, it's because I am! So, I've been reading everything I can find about this car, anxiously waiting for the new Fusions to arrive. I just love the look of this car, and after 3.5 years with my Prius I would like to get something new while the Prius still has a decent resale value. This morning I was pleased to see that there were a few new Fusions at my local dealer, so I went out there for a test drive. They had one in the color I thought I wanted (bordeaux reserve), and I took it for a spin. It was the base model with the 2.5 L engine. The car drove nicely, handled well, had a smooth ride and felt good to me, although the 2.5 was a little sluggish. Not to worry, though, I'm going to hold out for the hybrid, which I understand from reviews is a bit more peppy. However, one thing that really bugged me about this car was window noise. I kept hitting the window switches because it sounded like the windows were cracked open a bit, but they weren't. My husband was with me and when we discussed the car afterwards he had noticed the same thing. In other respects it was a very quiet ride, but I don't know if I'd get used to this or not; it sounded like the doors were not sealed properly and was very distracting throughout an otherwise very pleasant test drive. So my question for the group is whether or not others have noticed this on test drives. I know not many will have driven it yet, but I'm wondering if the one I drove was just not well put together. I'm planning to drive the hybrid as soon as it's available, so maybe that experience will be different, but right now I'm on the fence about whether this is an indication of the general quality of the car, or if it's something I could get used to. -Strike-
That's a good question. Honestly, I have not driven a car yet to see that for myself, but every review I've read have praised the quite cabin. I wonder if it's an issue with that particular car. This is the first I have heard about this complaint. Something tells me that this might just be a problem with that particular car. If it's not, I had a similar problem with my Mazda3 and after about a month I got so used to it that I never noticed it for the 8 years I owned it. Yes, I have been reading lots of reviews and they all said the same thing. After my test drive yesterday I came home and googled to see if I could find any mention of this, and I could not. I think I'm going to have to drive the hybrid before making my decision, but if one car comes off the line like this I have to wonder about my luck if I order one, as I was planning to do. I don't really like being limited to dealer stock, as there is always a compromise to be made. I had that problem when I bought my Prius and that is one reason I am not as happy with it as I know I should be.
deadman64
That's a good question. Honestly, I have not driven a car yet to see that for myself, but every review I've read have praised the quite cabin. I wonder if it's an issue with that particular car. I have driven the base 2.5L and there was zero road or window noise. So it sounds like there was a problem with that particular one. I haven't driven tons of luxury cars but that was easily the quietest cabin I have been in while driving.
elle
Yes, for road noise this one, too, was extremely quiet. In fact I thought to myself afterward that the window noise I heard was probably made more pronounced by the lack of other noise. One thing I thought of later is that I did not check to see if the vents were open or not. Next time I drive it I will make sure they are closed and see if that makes a difference. Though the noise sure sounded like it was coming from the door/window, maybe this was it.
akirby
Simple - go drive a couple more vehicles and then you'll know if it was isolated. If it's truly wind noise coming in between the door and the cabin that's relatively easy to fix by replacing or shimming the weatherstripping. Sometimes it just gets pinched or isn't seated properly. DarkeRetribution
Well that sucks lol. My guess is it's just that vehicle..after doing some searching most suggestions i'm finding support akirby and his "weatherstripping" idea. Could be the doors aren't properly adjusted or the car is just defective and needs to be properly checked at higher speeds..or at all lol...try a couple more fusions..but more specifically the one you want to buy and if that is the hybrid then make sure you're driving that one. akirby
If you order one, just get the dealer to agree that if it has that type of wind noise they'll either fix it or you'll get another vehicle.
elle
Also, I should mention that this was only apparent when we were driving on the highway. At slower speeds, the noise was not prominent. So if you drive one, make sure you get it up to speed, if you can.
Camride
I took a Titanium out for a test drive, got it up to 70mph on the highway and it definitely had 0 window noise. It's definitely just an issue with that car, probably the weatherstripping like mentioned already. It was one of the things that really impressed me was how quiet the car was. I personally would like more exhaust noise, but that can always be fixed later with an aftermarket exhaust. Definitely drive another one, but I'm confident it was just that one car.
elle
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and opinions. I'm starting to get excited about this car again, and will definitely be giving it another look when the hybrids are available to drive. I so wanted to fall head over heels in love with this car yesterday, and I almost did. Hopefully we'll hit if off better on the second date
TurboTi
One of the magazines did a comparison of the midsize cars, and the fusion was the quietest on the sound meter.
DarkeRetribution
I got my first test drive of the Fusion Hybrid..I can agree with Camride...0 wind noise. Got it up to 120 MPH on the highway going through the Grapevine on the 99. Car's totally crashed. It won't be going anywhere..but on the plus side, those Crush Cans really do work! Minor damage to the engine and my legs upon impact with a brick wall. I'll keep you updated on my health status and the next Fusion I drive next week. I want to see how well the Sirius navigation works underwater. So far I'm loving this thing! jeff_h
I also used to have a Prius and the Fusion Hybrid was definitely a step upward (and in almost 140k on my Fusion Hybrid I have never noticed wind noise), I say test drive another car and you will hace a much better experience and will be happy with the Fusion.

My sarcasm didn't come through cyberspace. I don't care for NASCAR, but they will be the best looking cars out there.
