Gurgeh
"General Motors said Thursday it is partnering with South Korea's LG Chem in a joint venture to build batteries for electric vehicles in a factory to be located near Lordstown, Ohio. The companies said they will invest up to a total of $2.3 billion through a new, equally owned joint venture... "The new battery plant will use the latest manufacturing processes to produce battery cells efficiently, gaining economies of scale throughout the value chain, GM said. The plant will be able to adapt to ongoing advances in technology and materials. The goal is to reduce battery costs to industry-leading levels... "For its part, LG Chem will gain access to an experienced workforce, it said. It will also benefit from a dedicated production stream of future EVs from GM’s next generation of fully electric vehicles, including a new electric truck coming in the fall of 2021 that will be assembly at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant." https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/general-motors/2019/12/05/gm-joint-venture-lordstown-batteries-lg-chem/2610738001/
Harley Lover
At least on the surface, this looks like a good idea for GM. I'd like to see Ford do the same, but perhaps Ford believes that EVs becoming a significant part of the market is still late decade 20's, therefore they aren't ready to pull the trigger yet. I was wondering the same thing-the MME is limited due to batteries and the F-150 BEV is going to have the same issues I'm assuming.
02MustangGT
If there is any truth to this article, LG Chem is supplying the batteries for the Mach E. So will this Lordstown LG Chem plant be supplying batteries exclusively for GM products? Not sure on the output for this plant but it seems logical and more cost effective for Ford to partner with LG Chem to build batteries in the states. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1126230_how-many-mustang-mach-e-electric-suvs-will-ford-build-we-ve-got-numbers
Dequindre
There is no doubt in my mind that GM is only putting this in Lordstown because of the pushback they got from closing the Lordstown Assembly Plant. Sometimes public and political pressure works.
twintornados
Would not be surprised to see a similar "tie up" with Ford at Flat Rock....

If Ford is going to be bringing out so many electric vehicles in the next few years they need to not be battery-constrained.
