Their growth is staggering, especially when ATP is around $60,000. The Fremont factory alone produces 500,000 vehicles/year. And 3 other factories on line or coming on line this year. Farley has a lot of catching up to do. And Tesla doesn't seem especially bothered by supply chain problems unlike Ford.

Agree 100%. Things seem to be snowballing in the wrong direction for Ford motor. The launch of the Bronco has not been good. And the timing of gas prices is gonna hurt even more. I just hope the launch of the Lightning next week is huge,we need some good news.

Yes indeed jose, the April 26 launch of F-150 Lightning will be momentous and a historic milestone for Ford Motor Company. Bill Ford Jr. said "If this launch doesn’t go well, we can tarnish the entire franchise. If the Lightning launch goes well, we have an enormous opportunity". F-150 Lightning has first mover advantage among mass market, full size LD BEV pickup trucks.

 

I think Ford will go above and beyond to ensure that the Lightning product launch is a success. Farley, Ford Jr., and other executives know that if this one turns out to be an "unmitigated disaster of stupefying proportions" like the Bronco and 2020 Explorer/Aviator product launches, Ford will likely be a casualty rather than a participant in the ongoing automotive industry revolution.

Tesla only has 4 vehicles that have a lot of common parts on them. They have fewer suppliers and tighter control on their supply chain than most as they have many things inhouse that other OEM's have shipped out for cost center and production cost reasons. 

Look at GM, they owned their own chip plant and decided to outsource production of them with the 2 billion dollar cost to update it, now look at where GM would be in the market if they had kept it open. Traditional OEM's have to answer to Wall street over the past 10 years while Tesla has gotten a pass at costs in the name of future profitability.

Traditional OEMs milked the "cash cow" of manufacturing and marketing low tech, polluting ICE powered vehicles as long as they could. Now that cow is dying and the OEMs are frantically trying to transition to the "new world" of the automotive industry. Not all traditional OEMs will survive until the end of this decade. With Farley as CEO, Ford is an a better position than most.

 

Tesla invested in completely new and different ways of manufacturing and marketing high tech, clean BEV, along with energy storage and generation products. As a result, Tesla has gross margins in the automotive segment of 33% nowadays. No traditional OEM in the global automotive industry has ever achieved that, and the disparity between Tesla and the incumbents is likely to widen in the years to come.

Horse hockey.  ICE is alive and well and will continue to be for many years.  The only reason Tesla has big margins is because they get the ADM markups that dealers are getting for other mfrs.  When the market corrects itself and the ADMs go away they’ll have to cut prices to compete and they’ll go back to modest profits.
