Ford "F"-en Problem

Why should a car be named something made up?

Do you also think that Mustang is a bad name?

I'll say it again, the name is great, and even people that might not like it won't give a crap when they see it, Toyota sells boatloads of corolla's, and Camry's, WTF are those? I think both of those names absolutely suck, yet nobody cares, they buy them anyways because they are perceived to be reliable transportation. Just like nobody will care what Ford's B car is called.

I remember some people thought the Edge was a bad name, yet it's the best seller in it's class..

See all those names are either nonsense, or English. Stupid words from other languages, or at least well know words they are not. So they have no other connotation other than being a car. When Americans think Fiesta they think pinatas and other silly hispanic things.

Mustang is fine, because it is a fitting name.

Camary is fine cuz they made the name only mean a car.

I don't think you see how silly it is to call it a Fiesta in America.

There is a difference between a sucky name like Corolla and and a silly name like Fiesta.

Maybe because I can speak some Spanish, I dunno. Or maybe because I am a young guy. Either way it's dumb to dismiss my opinions outright.

FWD -or-AWD....with a V6 that makes more power than your :redcard: . Probably rides and handles better too. :hysterical:

The MKTaurus has slightly more HP and a lot less torque..and my car sounds better and is correct wheel drive.

But...you can have your "near luxury" car all you want...and enjoy higher running costs, maintenance costs, and repair costs.

I just wish Ford would bring the Mustang to Europe l won't complain, you can call it what you like. They would sell millions here it needs to go global SAP it would create a lot more jobs in the US as well. Call it what you want.

Why can’t a Ford Mustang, optimized for overseas customers, be just as big a sales success in Europe as a Harley-Davidson? Alan Mulally, Ford’s chief executive, is probably better positioned than anyone in the American auto industry to answer that question. After all, he used to run Boeing......

Maybe there were folk like you that said the Camry was a bad name that would never sell, when it first entered the States? But the Camry has now sold 10 million worldwide.

But the name Camry name is not as popular as the Fiesta because Ford have already sold 12 million examples to folk that liked the Fiesta name you might just be in the minority here, how many Fusions have Ford shifted just interested?

12 Million folk don't like the name Fiesta?

When you say Fiesta, I think of a Mexican hat dance. It would do better being named and marketed as a sophisticated, but economical alternative to a kids first cheap car!

It sells mainly as Grandads last car in Europe.

This aint EU and their marketing plans won't work here. You say Fiesta, and many will think you mean Festiva, I think that to be counter productive. Why don't we rehash old names or ones that sound like those of failed vehicles so that no one will even care to look! :finger:

outside of here how many people really remember what was made 10-15 years ago, Name-wise? The only reason people know Civic, Camry, Accord is that their names have been the same for over 30 years now.

Just look at Ford in the past 30 years when its come to small cars:

Pinto

Fiesta

Escort

Festiva

ZX2

Focus

All where B or C sized cars and none of them lasted longer then 20 years, some only lasted a couple years...

You forgot asspire, and 7th gen Cougar, but I think the ZX2 and ZX4 had the best rep, other than the 94' style Escorts

Actually you are confused, the mini-van was the same vehicle with nothing but a name change, the Fiesta is an all new class leading car that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the old one, or the Festiva.

Nobody who buys a Fiesta will care about the name, in fact, for those of us who are actually knowledgeable about the Euro Fiesta and how good the Festiva was, it will be a sales boon.

Yeah, the piece of shit worst-in class minivan was renamed to sound almost identical to the brand-new segment creating vehicle. Brilliant! Consumers couldn't keep them apart. Journalists couldn't keep them apart. Hell, even auto writers, and plenty of the so-called "experts" HERE got them confused more often than not. The bad product clouded perception of the new one before the new one ever had a chance.

Yeah, but people won't have issues keeping "Fiesta" and "Festiva" apart. Right.

Who in their right mind ever wanted to be seen in a US Festiva? IIRC You're not from here. I can tell you virtually all of them were dead and buried and unseen within 5 years, until the new fuel price spike a few years ago made them resurrected accessories of necessity. Trust me, plenty of the people who could AFFORD the upcoming B-car remember the Festiva... and most of them would have chosen the Geo at that time.

I do remember the US Fiesta, I had a friend who had one. The person who compared it to a go-kart wasn't far off the mark, it was a lot of fun for what it was. Unfortunately, I remember the super-thin doors and panels with exposed painted interior metal. Didn't leave a comforting impression. But then that was a car from 30 years ago so it's an apple to a modern orange. I'm not actually worried about that.

You are right that the car SHOULD sell on merits regardless of name. Key word is "should". It might not though. Consumers are fickle. And you are absolutely delusional if the think the prevailing US sentiment of the name "Festiva" is favorable. Plus, rightly or wrongly there's also a lot of anti-hispanic sentiment in the country now so a car with a "Mexican" name would be seen as another attempt to sell out. I counter the Ford should avoid any and ALL potential negativity where they can, and the name was a freebie! Verve or even some stupid made-up word with no track record would have been better.

The fact that we're (the forum) even having this discussion proves this is one more small stupid hurdle that a new Ford product didn't need to have to overcome.

No it just goes to show how anal-rentive people are and will find the littlest thing to bitch about on here...the same thing happened when the Ford Futura changed to Fusion and the Five Hundred went to the Taurus....

THANK YOU! My sentiments exactly.. By bringing back the Fiesta name, I too believe Ford is going to bring back mroe negative memories than positive. Even if most will wrongly remember the Festiva instead, both names scream "little POS that I don't want to be seen driving." Sorry if that sounds mean, but it's true..Americans would rather drive around a nameplate than an actual car..sad but true..

not sure i agree...the Fiesta has an EXTREMELY loyal following in Europe......and ANYONE that declines looking at a potential superior vehicle based on its nameplate is lacking a little grey matter and has warped priorities....

An extremely loyal following in Europe doesn't do a whole lot in America though..

Ford have decided on Fiesta so there are no hurdles to overcome. I don't think Mexico was much on any bodies mind when the 12 million past buyer decided to buy a new Fiesta, up and till now. Why what's wrong Fiesta/Mexico link, coming from Europe l just don't understand what you problem is? What is it just interested.

I don't think it will have the slightest effect on sales...car is stunning, it will sell itself regardless.....AND make re-invent the nameplate to one of quality and design prowess, along with desirablity in its segment.......

Hey I hope it turns out to be a homerun, but the way the car market has been for Ford, I just think that the name Fiesta might hurt them just a little bit. You say about how the car will sell itself, look at the Fusion and even the old Five Hundred. Both cars were very nice cars and at the top of their classes in comparisons, but has either of them really challenged Toyota's offerings? Not really. Why? Because nowadays marketing and media sells cars. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see this thing take off, but I'm just skepticle of how it is going to be able to do it.

One thing that the Fusion and 500 ( now Taurus) lack dismally that the Fiesta has in droves......style and FRESH design....they may be nice cars but stylistically they scream BLAND!

It should sell with $100 a barrel oil, and folk up to their eyeballs in personal debt in the US at the moment it should do well as folk downsize to cutback.

Well, just because it should sell with all of those variables doesn't mean it will. We should all probably wait until the actual car comes out to see if it drives as well as some think it looks. Plus, who says it's gonna get as good or better gas mileage than anything else that will be coming out, and who says it's gonna be as cheap as everything else out there? Why don't we all just wait and see?lol

not to mention that a majority of comparitive manufacturers efforts in the segment are as ugly as a Hollywood starlett sans make-up.

I don't have a problem with the Festiva name in Europe. It has established cred and a certain bit of cachet over there. It makes sense.

And yes, a getting hung up about a name is stupid. But you of all people should know that nobody ever went broke underestimating American stupidity. On the flipside of that coin, to Ford's potential detriment, the name "Festiva" will call up instant flashbacks in the minds of many people who stupidly will never give the car a chance beyond that. Joe Public's loss maybe... but another loss that Ford can ill afford.

I don't have a problem with the name in Europe. I don't have a problem with the cars being the same. And as a matter of fact, I _personally_ don't have too much issue with the name Festiva myself... I love the car and would consider one, and I'm not concerned about the "image" a chrome nameplate would portend (but then I am one of the idiots who owns a Freestyle LOL). But remember, image is everything and that's why America mortgaed itself subprime to but all kinds of stupid shit because of a name with perceived "cachet". (Coach handbags? Williams-Sonoma cookware? Puh-lease!) And with that being said, I do think that name is a big mistake for the American market. But that's just MHO and I would love to be wrong.
