Several years ago Chevy tried to sell it's Nova in Mexico--this is a classic marketing disaster!

No. http://www.snopes.com/business/misxlate/nova.asp

i so liked the name Verve. especially when paired with Flex, Edge, and Fusion. I guess it is supposed to be a party car? besides, at least they aren't in the s's then we'd have siesta.

Yeah, but in the Bronx and in Boston, it'd be a Voive. :)

Beat me to it. I believe that a lot of my "peers" dislike people trying to sound hp by using other languages. To them that is what the Fiesta is going to be. Just like that U2 song that starts with Uno-Dos-tres-catorce. A lot of people hated that song because it tried to be clever in another language.

Look stop overreacting, I'm giving you my insight. I feel that this name will keep young males away like it was Zima. Why defend something that may keep Ford from winning over the youth? I know a lot of older people won't care, but 20 somethings will, and that's who this car should be targeted towards.

I think you might be the one overreacting...Cars aren't alcohol and your whole Zima example is horrible, Zima was marketed as an alternative to Wine Coolers which are more popluar with women then Men...thus why they where turned down by young Males because it wasn't masculine enough for them

You misunderstand me, keep them away like it was Zima, not named Zima. And yes at first it was marketed at males, but that's not the point. I really think this is a silly idea, and people here seem to be ok with it. I hope the car does, well BUT I don't like how Ford seems to like playing with a self imposed handicap.

I don't get how the car is going to be handicapped with the name Fiesta...I guess because I'm old enough to have lived and been driven in one when it was around the first time in the late 1970s...I think the whole name thing is getting overblown by too many people on here...I'm pretty sure that Ford's marketing won't even touch upon its "party" connotations it has

Ford needs to hire somebody to come up with new names. The latest ones suck.

Last time they did that (back in the 50's), they invited a poet named Marianne Moore to come up with names for the upcoming, yet un-named Edsel.

She came up with the following (this is true by the way):

Utopian Turtletop

Silver Sword

Thundercrest/Thundercrester

Resilient Bullet

Intelligent Whale

Pastelogram

Andante con Moto

Varsity Stroke

Mongoose Civique

Chaparral

Turcotinga

Maybe I'm alone here, but I see one problem with bringing the name Fiesta to America. Unlike overseas, i don't the name Fiesta carries the same meaning here in the US. When I think of a Fiesta, I think of a crappy little car in the 90's much like a Geo Metro. Now maybe those were good cars to whoever may have owned one, but I think a name like "Verve" would generate a little more interest to my generation of 20 year olds. I mean seriously, even with rising gas prices, does anyone really want to think of driving a little Metro or Fiesta?

Your confusing it with Festiva, which was a pretty crappy car

The word being confused (fiesta <> festiva) is a matter of semantics. The _confusion_ itself is a true concern. Fiesta is a terrible name, not in the least because it DOES readily look and almost sounds like Festiva. And any negative connection is something that should be avoided.

People who downplay this are kidding themselves. I mean we all know how well Freestar - Freestyle worked out, right? :finger:

I had a Fiesta, a 1979 GHIA edition. It has a factory sunroof and AC though the AC did not work, I beat the SH*T out of that car in HS and it kept going. However I do think the Fiesta name is rather a bore and silly at best. A simple rename to Verve is no more difficult than the different manual languages that will need to be printed for the various countries.

Some just got to get over it, and maybe get a life. These car whiners on the 'net are pick pick picky. They will complain about tail lights, names, or door handles as if its the Iraq War.

I am sure if Verve was used, there would be just as many nit pickers, asking why not Fiesta or Pinto?

Maybe there were folk like you that said the Camry was a bad name that would never sell, when it first entered the States? But the Camry has now sold 10 million worldwide.

But the name Camry name is not as popular as the Fiesta because Ford have already sold 12 million examples to folk that liked the Fiesta name you might just be in the minority here, how many Fusions have Ford shifted just interested?

12 Million folk don't like the name Fiesta?

Think U.S. market. Nobody in America knows what a Fiesta is, but it "sounds" like a small car name.

Small cars are good in Europe. Basic small cars in America are bad. It means you were too poor to buy "a real car" like a standard midsize or even a Kia.

Aveo is a superior name to Fiesta. Even Tercel is a superior name.

Well it does sound dumb. ck in the At least Yaris is not a word that an American would know. Oh and My parents owned a Festiva back in the late 80's. Guess what the names are similar enough to confuse. So I can only see it being at least slightly negative. Sorry I just see it as a pointless self handicapping.

Actually you are confused, the mini-van was the same vehicle with nothing but a name change, the Fiesta is an all new class leading car that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the old one, or the Festiva.

Nobody who buys a Fiesta will care about the name, in fact, for those of us who are actually knowledgeable about the Euro Fiesta and how good the Festiva was, it will be a sales boon.

In fact, this car is so good they could call it shit and it wouldn't hurt sales.

Toyota sells tons of cars with terrible names, so you're up in arms over nothing.

Get over it.

Aveo and Tercel are both crap, Fiesta is as good as any other name..

Why should a car be named something made up?

Do you also think that Mustang is a bad name?

I'll say it again, the name is great, and even people that might not like it won't give a crap when they see it, Toyota sells boatloads of corolla's, and Camry's, WTF are those? I think both of those names absolutely suck, yet nobody cares, they buy them anyways because they are perceived to be reliable transportation. Just like nobody will care what Ford's B car is called.

I remember some people thought the Edge was a bad name, yet it's the best seller in it's class..

I've got a buddy who had a festiva -- He got rid of it when it had 260,000 miles on it. It was fun as hell -- like driving a go kart. Sure, every once and a while we'd lose headlights in the middle of the night, and something in the rear axle broke when a hefty girl was sitting back there, but the car was a good time.

He replaced it with an Aspire (which also had over 200,000 miles on it when he got rid of it).
