Codes are meant to be changed. Even the Constitution was meant to be changed, hence why it was made amendable. Our forefathers knew that the role of government and the code by which society would want to live would change with time. That's why those checks were put into the document. Better slow change than no change at all until the only recourse is revolution.

I don't know that I would go so far as to say they are meant to be changed, but I will agree that they can be changed.

The problem as I see it, is that our Federal Government (and the powers wielded by it) is too influential in our daily lives when the "righteous winds of change" can fundamentally usurp our way of life in a 2- or 4-year cycle (or a single election).

The Amendment process was intended to be hard for a reason. We don't have slow change anymore. We have upheaval every election it seems.

I have absolutely nothing against anyone who wishes to practice his/her religion in any way they want. Just so long as they are not infringing upon my own rights in the process. I have no problem with organized religion or with those who practice it. I just don't want to be a part of it myself, or looked down upon because I choose not to involve myself with it.

No one who would "Love thy neighbor as thyself" would coerce you, dismiss you, or look down upon you.

I believe that God gave us free will. The Federal Government should as well.

Your country was built on the foundation of separation of Church and State. The things you are asking others to withhold have nothing to do with religion, and you oppose them probably in part, because of your religions views.

While I agree shoving one's personal (religious) views down my throat would be offensive to me there is or should be a sense of right and wrong. It's wrong to steal, it's wrong to deceive fpr personal gain etc. I also don't believe in handing out money for nothing to anyone as this eventually becomes expected income on the part of the recipiant. If you would like to check we now have 4th an 5th generation welfare recipiants.

I believe charity begins at home first, if I decide I want to make a monetary donation to someone or charity it is my call to do or not do. I know how my financial state is! But just the same as religious points of view I would find it offense to be forced to hand over any part of the income I have worked my ass off for without out my permission first.

more killings have been done in the name of religion than for any other reason. the most minute difference in the interpretation of the most basic passages in the bible can result in a crusade of sorts.

it's sad.

it's hypocracy at it's finest to say that you're doing something in the name of (G)god.

Wow, some very thoughtful rhetoric here.

How refreshing to read both religious, and non religious views, without name calling................ or judgement............. on either side.

The nation, as a whole, could learn alot from communication such as this.

I am much like Nick and Dean. Some would consider us anomalies of society.............. yet, I consider us to be more mainstream than most would admit. I am conservative when it comes to government intrusion, government size, and social programs. Yet, I am pro choice, and believe there is nothing wrong with gay marraige (they are hurting noone). I believe there may be a higher power, but do not believe in any particular organized religion............... as the hypocracy is something I just cannot get over. Yes, you have the right to believe as you do, just don't try to force me to believe the same. As Nick said, I believe strongly in treating others as you would like to be treated................. and alot of radical religous people who do well to abide by this principal. I am working hard to instill this in my son.

It seems like politics anymore, is about the extremes, with the middle getting ignored most of the time. It would be nice if political titles, such as Democrat and Republican would just go away. This would free up politicians to be what they are............... not what their title says they should be. If most remember Social Studies in school, the basic premise of the two parties are so close.................. as to be almost indistinguishable. What they have morphed into, today, is a bunch of ridiculous absolutes.

This election, frankly, scares me. If Obama wins, and Congress ends up with a serious majority of Democrats, alot of very scary things can happen. Much the same as if a Republican wins, and has a heavy majority in Congress. Things are much better, when there is gridlock. The country can take care of itself.

Unless of course you're a socialist who's moral compass is so screwed up you have trouble finding the door.

I am not a socialist, I'm a liberal...oooh scary. Morality is an important things, and morality is the exact reason that I hope church and state never again meet in either your country and mine. In many cases, religion is anything but moral.

they don't just knock on MY door trying to convince their way is the right way? invite them in and tell them the 15 person orgy starts in 15.....

One day, I'd like to get a pair of those large mirror-finish contact lenses, and open the door. Or maybe just the flame-red normal-size.

Tell that to the bible-thumpers I encounter on an almost daily basis.

Honestly, you'd do a better job yourself, although it would require you to become familiar with the Bible. All I can suggest is that you ask them the following question:

Yesterday I was visited by___________ (insert your Judeo-Christian denomination of choice here), and they said something different. Which one is right?

I will confront any self-proclaimed religious person who tells me that only they are correct, but I will not damn them for playing the role they believe God wants them to fill.

A relationship with God (or none at all) is a personal one. Church is about fellowship and the sharing of wisdom, not coercion or exclusion.

I'm assuming your comment is based on something someone said/did to you. Is it possible that they were merely inviting you to join them in fellowship?

you forgot one, elect supreme court judges who will interpret the constitution and not legislate from there. Obama doesn' t want this, he said he wants judges to be emphitetic to the plight of poor, gay, race etc. what a crock. in other word define the law according to who you are not what the law actually is.

We make $80K a year. I would fully expect to see a large tax increase, because, in years past, the Dems have pretty much lumped anyone who makes over $60K a year to be rich.

Yep, we sure are rich. Our massive 1350sq ft house pays homage to our wealth, as does the fact that we live paycheck to paycheck.

This is the feeling I am getting as well. I look at all of this as tell'em what they want to hear but we knowingly will have to do something else.
