Genesis Coupe Tested

I just see this as where the Tiburon left off...

How? The only thing they have in common is the 4-cyl engine block.

Tiburon= 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse, re-skinned. Anemic engine lineup at best. No street cred whatsoever. Basically, a 2-door Elantra, if such a thing existed.

GenCoupe= All-original, all-Hyundai platform. Excellent engine choices sporting up-to-date technology. Optional Brembo brakes (which, btw, the Mustang doesn't offer, except on the $50K+ Shelby GT-500), lots of room for aftermarket upgrades. The only quirks mentioned were software calibration, which can be changed with the right equipment.

Point being, they are nothing alike. You guys had your minds made up before Hyundai even announced this car's existence. It amuses me endlessly to see you guys complain about an article, citing the author's lack of hands-on experience with the car in THIS THREAD, only to turn around and do the exact same thing yourselves.

Give me a freakin' break. :slap:

Oh my f-ken God, when I made the comment, I was talking "in essence". As in, this vehicle picks up from where the Tiburon left off. Meaning...2 door coupe at a lower price point...now a 2 door coupe, at a higher price point that people can grow into.

I at no point made ANY specific details about engine blocks, 4 cylinder blah blah, etc. or whack off fantasies about where the vehicle came from, where it stemmed from, what it wants to battle, who it thinks it's competition is, blah blah. Don't get your panties in a bunch, geesh!

But like the Tiburon, the Genesis coupe appears to maintain the dead steering feel and sloppy suspension compliance. Does it look like a good vehicle? Eh, I guess. Does it look like a great vehicle? It's no Mustang, that's for sure. And ooooo ahhhhh on the Brembo brakes. If they are anything like the Brembo brakes Ford used on the Cobras, they aren't worth their weight in crap.

Mustang GT is cheaper, faster, benefits from existing aftermarket support better (and probably always will), and gets damn near the same fuel milage.

Oh, but the Genesis has an IRS.

I DO think the Genesis Coupe is 'neat' though. It looks too much like the last Tiburon, but i never thought it was a bad (albeit a bit cheap) looking car.

Antaus,

You're right. I over-reacted, and I apologize. I was more PO'd at the posts that replied to yours than I was at your post in particular.

For future reference, however, comparing the Genesis to a Tiburon is sort of like comparing a Mustang to an Escort ZX2. ;)

On another note, Mustang fans have a reason to rejoice-- the Genesis Coupe gives Ford a perfectly good reason to build a 4-cylinder EcoBoost Mustang!

Sorry, you can put me with the group of people that want to throw up at the idea of another four cylinder Mustang. Hate it. If I want rice, I'll buy rice. I want a Mustang...

The Mustang GT is a LOT faster. The Genesis Coupe does 0-60 in the mid 6's and the Mustang GT is low 5's and some can get it in high 4's, especially the 2010 model. Dang, the 2010 Fusion Sport will probably do 0-60 in mid 6's. Maybe even a 2010 Fusion SE with V6 and $22,000 price tag will probably do 0-60 in 6's. Big deal.

If the 3.5EB is any indicator, a 2.5 Ecoboost would be like a NA 3.5 with a much better torque curve and better fuel economy (and lighter). It would in no way be similar to the high reving torqueless wonders in the Civic Si or S2000. I'd still take the V8, but for the majority of people that take the V6's, it'd be a big upgrade.

I think the Brembo's on the Cobra was simply Brembo pads. I had a 04' Cobra and I own a EVO now and the calipers are completely different. My calipers on my EVO are more along the lines of what came on the 350 track model, STI, GT500, and G35 coupes. The Genesis looks to have those Brembos from what I've seen in pics.

Can't say much on the V6 model Genesis, but the turbo 4 banger already has a aftermarket. It shares the same 4B11 engine as the EVO X. There are some differences cause the EVO X has a MIVEC head and the Genesis does not have that. If it does, its Hyundias own version. I haven't read anywhere that the Genesis has variable valve timing though.

Great idea Hyundai had right their...WTF did they do to the design though?

I don't mind the design....my only gripes are the odd double shoulder line and the rear window kink thing.

Well, hopefully that will be possible shortly after GM launches the car in, what is it now? 2013? Anyone know if they ever got the interior tooling from the supplier?

Last I read, they were still having issues.

Hyundai is poising itself well for the post recession boom. There is a new Sonata on the way as well that looks serious.

The new Sonata makes me think of the new Mazda6.
