Ford Focus to be the best selling car on the planet? Yup!!

Recommended Posts

Historically it was the Escort year after year, then the Focus was, its really not news, its been consecutively the same thing with the Corolla coming up right after. As more of the Chinese market opens up the battle will continue.

The Chinease are not real fond of Japan!

Yes, I've heard of the Rape of Nanking. Perhaps you missed THE BATAAN DEATH MARCH or PEARL HARBOR?

I didn't want to go there ladies and gentlemen. Here, we Colonials supported the Brits in Hong Kong, Singapore, Burma and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). That said the Sino-Japanese War 31-45 was pretty close if not over the top in destruction it was compared to the much-lauded Eastern Front. Sorry, it makes Battan and Pearl Harbor (with much respect to the veterans) a skirmish by comparison. I'm not familiar why this current row is happening so forgive my ignorance. This does come up still from time to time and it's a very sour issue.

My point is not that anyone's experiences are worse than anyone else's, it's that yesterday's hatred has little to do with today's buying habits. When I was younger, I knew lots of people who "wouldn't buy no damned Jap crap" specifically because of Pearl Harbor, Bataan, and so forth, but there are very few of them left, and they're growing fewer all the time--and some of them have actually purchased Japanese cars. (F'rinstance, my mother's uncle flew PBYs in the South Pacific, and as late as the '80s he wouldn't even have considered a Japanese car, but the last car he bought for my mother's aunt was a brand-new '07-ish Nissan.)

I'm also not saying that the Japanese car makers are going to go like gangbusters in China the same way they have here--just don't count on any supposed hatred to suppress the market for their vehicles. Governments have disputes over territory, but it's people who buy the cars, and in a population of 1.5 billion people, I'm sure there's a significant number of car buyers who'll draw no more of connection between Tiyoda and the Rape of Nanking than most American car buyers do between them and Pearl or Bataan.

Now, Mitsubishi, on the other hand... ;)

Now, I'm not too sure I agree with the Chinese buyers and connection with history you stated. Based upon the historical evidence I stated before. I haven't seen any import dealerships torched in NA lately but perhaps that's passe. It appears burning 'Sacred Publications' is the hip thing now for some. :)

Oh, I know there are quite a few who are still hopping mad at Japan (heck, the Koreans are still PO'd at them, too), but in 1.5 billion people, there are bound to be quite a lot of them who'll ignore it, and it seems to me that the more educated and affluent (the ones most likely to buy a car in the first place) are the most likely to be in that group. Remember, if just 1% does fall into that category, that's still 15 million people...

That's reserved for Hummer dealerships in Kahleefohneeya. :)

If they want to follow our trends, it seems to me the 'educated and affluent' will kick up a fuss and hope others will riot over it. :)

there is no comparison between the two.The Nanking Massacre or Nanjing Massacre, also known as the Rape of Nanking, was a mass murder and war rape that occurred during the six-week period following the Japanese capture of the city of Nanking (Nanjing), the former capital of the Republic of China, on December 13, 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. During this period, hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers were murdered by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army.[1][2] Widespread rape and looting also occurred.[3][4] Historians and witnesses have estimated that 250,000 to 300,000 people were killed.[5] Several of the key perpetrators of the atrocities, at the time labelled as war crimes, were later tried and found guilty at the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal, and were subsequently executed. Another key perpetrator, Prince Asaka, a member of the Imperial Family, escaped prosecution by having earlier been granted immunity by the Allies.
