GM pays dealers $5,000 for ELR test drives

General Motors has reportedly launched an incentive program that provides a $5,000 to $10,000 bonus to dealers that log test-drives in the Cadillac ELR.

The company is also providing new discounts for customers, shaving $3,000 off the plug-in hybrid's $75,000 list price in an attempt to spark demand.

The ELR is based on the powertrain that underpins the Chevrolet Volt, which itself has failed to meet initial sales goals. The upscale Cadillac model faces stiff competition from the Tesla Model S, despite its gasoline-powered range extension, and from the lesser Volt and other cheaper hybrids.
