Stray Kat
Have a reminder set in my phone. This should be interesting. I feel like NASCAR needs this new Mustang as much as Ford needs to promote it. There is even a new Toyota coupe coming next year. Hope this is the beginning of a bunch of exciting rollouts for the fall and winter of 18/19. Is Toyota talking about a related production coupe of some kind?

akirby
They don't have a production Supra yet but they have the 86 and the Lexus RC and LC.
akirby
Good news is the production Supra shares just as many parts with its non existent production counterpart as the Xfinity Mustang shares with a real Mustang.
tbone
Its nice they are moving toward actual sports car bodies for NASCAR but they need to do something to make it more interesting than going around in a circle. Perhaps figure 8 racing?

blksn8k2
See: Daytona/Talladega Exactly. It's a shame that at least 50% of the new Mustang bodies will be destroyed by the end of their first race (Daytona 500). blksn8k2
There has been a lot of speculation that Ford will suffer the same fate next year with the Mustang as Chevrolet did this year with the new Camaro body. I think that is not as likely to happen as people think. First of all, Chevy was surprisingly blind-sided by the new low downforce rules package for 2018. The Camaro was supposedly designed to fit the old rules package. Unless NASCAR makes some major body changes for 2019, Ford should have designed the Mustang to best fit the current rules package. The other X factor is SHR. After Hendrick (and Chevy) lost SHR as a client/partner at the end of 2015 their fortunes have gone steadily downhill. It also doesn't help that most of their drivers are inexperienced. Hendrick has been the best Chevy team for years and when they falter so does Chevy. If not for SHR even more races would have probably gone to Toyota this year as Penske has not really been much of a threat and Roush is even worse than Hendrick. What is sad is that Toyota really only has five cars in Cup. I suppose that could be seen as an advantage in that their resources are not spread as thin as they are with the other two makes. However, the odds say that the more cars you have on the track your chances of winning should be better. Unfortunately, the only place that seems to actually work is at the demo-derby tracks. fuzzymoomoo
Chevy and Toyota at least attempted to make their cars look like the road car. The NASCAR Camaro looks sweet.

Don’t they still use the same body templates?
fuzzymoomoo
Youre kidding right? Dont they still use the same body templates? Look at the noses of the other two, then look at the Mustang. The Toyota and Chevy nose both proportionately look like the road car. The Mustang looks like it got stung by a thousand bees and ran into a wall. IMSA-XJR9
Which could indicate the GT500 may also have the older headlights. . . a la . . current gt350. Edited August 10, 2018 by IMSA-XJR9
fuzzymoomoo
Which I think might indicate that the GT500 might also have the order headlighta . . . A La . . Current gt350 My guess is the GT500 uses the same fenders as the GT350. Thats the reason they didnt change the headlights. Changing that would have meant new stampings for the fenders. coupe3w
We'll see in February how long it takes the driver's to get used to the new ride... It's not so much the drivers, but the engineers, crew chiefs, and fabricators.
