They seem to show promise in urban environments. It seemed like a quarter of the people on my college campus were using some form of e-bike, scooter, or hoverboard to get around. You just need to appeal to the right audience. The companies in Provo appealing to wealthy college students definitely found their audience, and are making money hand over fist.

Thanks for the examples DeluxeStang. Ford itself had its own electric scooter business unit when it acquired Spin in 2018. Sadly, Ford sold off that business in 2022. Currently Spin is owned by Bird Global. Let’s Go for a Spin: Ford Buys Scooter Company to Provide Customers a First-Last Mile Solution | Ford Media Center

In general the "sharing economy" tends to be a rapid form of asset destruction that quickly sends new vehicles to the scrap yards. Talked to a non profit that rented out Smart cars and found their single biggest cost was crash repairs, apparently drunks found they were a convenient way to try to get home without risking their own cars... Talked to a repair tech for a scooter rental outfit, found out that a new scooter in a big city has a life expectancy of about 6 weeks. A large part of the job for workers in both these "shared economy" startups was simply recovering abandoned or hoarded vehicles.

Electric scooters represent one component of the super high growth micromobility sector, which McKinsey said last year "is the only thing that’s up in usage post-COVID-19. Public transit is still down versus pre-COVID-19 levels. Car sharing, e-hailing, ride hailing, and so on are on the same level, maybe a bit up."

Mr. Rastelli is a successful businessman. In addition to operating HFX e-Scooters for the past 4 years, Rastelli is also the founder of Segway Nova Scotia, which he has run for 11 years. Segway Nova Scotia - Company Information (segwayns.com)

Those Bird and whatever other brand scooters were all over a few years ago.  And then everyone left them anywhere and everywhere - roads, canals, sidewalks, etc -  and all the local cities banned them.

Wish they stuck with it so they'd have an e-bike and electric kick scooter division.

My electric kick scooter is my first EV ownership experience. Lol  Quite useful going around the city.

Most definitely AM222. It's disappointing that Ford no longer owns Spin. Sadly, Ford also got rid of both Chariot (crowdsourced shuttle service) and GoBike (bicycle sharing) a few years ago from its Smart Mobility business unit. From an electric vehicle standpoint, E-Transit would be a great fit for a service like Chariot.

Problem with shared vehicle services is that the average driver gets into way too many crashes, especially when it's somebody else's vehicle and there are almost no consequences for trashing and crashing the vehicle. We're especially seeing that trend now as "sharing economy" services are lowering their renter standards to bring in more business- For example, one of the house sharing services is openly renting a party house in Minneapolis and most of it's renters are gang members!

Ford originally purchased Spin for $100 million then sold it to Tier in exchange for equity

when Tier was valued at $2 billion. Bird then acquired by Spin from Tier for $19 million

It’s hard to know where Ford stands financially out of this but I think Tier may be better off

without Spin which is US based and clearly separate to Tier’s European business plans…

Ford's Pro division is partnering with Xcel Energy to install 30,000 EV charging ports for commercial and government fleet vehicles in Xcel's service territories (Colorado, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas) by 2030. The program is called 30x30. Ford Pro and Xcel Energy Collaborate to Support Installation of 30,000 EV Charging Ports for Business Fleets by 2030 | Ford Media Center

Highlights.

  • Xcel Energy will install the charging infrastructure for business customers that qualify for and enroll in an approved Electric Vehicle Supply Infrastructure (EVSI) program in the customer’s service location, with most upfront costs offset by Xcel Energy.
  • Ford Pro will provide Ford Pro Charging equipment and post-installation customer service and support.
  • Ford Pro and Xcel Energy also intend to analyze telematics data from vehicles participating in the initiative to promote commercial charging during off-peak times, helping reduce electric grid emissions and potentially saving customers money.
  • Starting in 2024, 30x30 will be available through Xcel Energy’s EVSI program in Colorado and Wisconsin
