Is a nameplate that important? I will be really surprised if sales take off due to a name change...

On another note, this also marks a departure from the "F" names, right?

It is somewhat important....Ford admits they goofed without saying they goofed.

Also, does this do anything for the oft-repeated statement: "The Five Hundred is not a replacement for the Taurus."

;)

Holy SHIT!

LOL

Damn.. Mulally did it... He really did it.... Now all they gotta do is ship those same old Taurus nameplates FedEx to the assembly line...

The next rename? The Focus becomes the Pinto...

Okay damn it.. bring back the Thunderbird already....

Well at least there is hope now the Lincolns will get their names back...

Well it does have name recognition, and well this is a good test for Ford to see if they can fix a "damaged" nameplate...instead of just abandoning it like whats been the status quo for years in Detroit.

Yes and its the first product to lose its F name

No the new Taurus is the replacement for the old Taurus and the last generation Passat...

Okay so does the Montego name get canned for Sable now? It better not... I like Montego better...

I actually agree with that as well. I have fond memories of my old 'Scorts. Lots of good equity in that name as well.

I do too my Family had 5 of them from 1982 till 1992...the 86 Escort GT we had and the 92 LX where Awesome, with both seeing well over 100K trouble free miles on them. The GT was still on the road in 1998 with over 200K after the 3-4 owner...LOL

I had an 86 GT as well. Red...it was my little pocket rocket (well, I was young...it seemed like a rocket)

Also had a 91 Escort (1st year of that gen). Still going strong (albeit with new owners) with well over 200K miles.

Nah call it the Escort...the 08 redesign has a hint of the 93-96 style Escort headlights now

Okay now that will work because it looks more like an Escort anyway.. And it will free up the Focus name so Mulally can get the real Focus ST and Cabrio here until they can be tooled up for the next generation to be built here.

I am guessing Montego will stay. Montego is a good name and has some history with Mercury. I bet sales of the Five Hundred will pick up just for the fact the name has been changed back to something people are familiar with. Taurus was a name that sort of got a bad reputation, but it does not carry a reputation like Bronco II or Pinto does. Many...many people have owned and had great luck with Taurus' over the years and they were always safe family cars. They were good cars, just not that exciting. When it comes to marketing cars however, people feel a lot safer buying a nameplate they have had experience with.

I agree Lincoln should have stayed with names as well. Zephyr should have stayed Zephyr and the new MKS should have been the Continental. DUH Ford! Fix the MKS name BEFORE it comes out!!! Are you listening?!?!

I hated the paint...oxidized so easy...

drop me a PM and I'll see if I can find my scanned in photos of it getting built at the Edison plant in NJ...my old man worked there and took pictures of it travelling down the line

LOL!!! The WORST!! Every time I waxed that car I had to throw out the rag because it turned red.

Did yours get rust up on the A-pillars? That was the reason I eventually had to get rid of it. Great little car though.

Nope, but the rear wheel wells rusted like a bitch! I accidently put a screw driver though it one day, and the car had extra undercoating to boot!

I am glad if this is true, that there is a departure of the 'F' names for the sake of 'F' names. I personally like Five Hundred but perhaps Taurus will work. Whether the public will remember that the Taurus was a good car remains to be seen. That is where marketing has to come in. Just don't call the Montego a Sable because that name is from a filthy rodent ;)

There has been a suggestion that the C170 Focus be called a Escort and sell (limited numbers I imagine) the C1 ST and Cabrio until C2 gets online is a great idea. I don't agree with getting rid of the Focus name though. My personnal experiences with escorts sucked and foci were great. That's MHO of course.

Back to topic; whatever works. If you can get customers back, do it. What did the original Taurus sell on? Space, Safety, Mileage(?) what else?

congrats Ford, YOU FAILED IT!

Sticking a good name on a turd does one thing, it ruins the good name.

Does the 500 look like a Taurus to you? NO!

There better be a MAJOR overhaul of this turd to make it worthy of the Taurus name. They better take bits and pieces from the S60R to make a Taurus SHO.

Otherwise this is like taking your prized pit bull, cutting its balls off, and putting it in a petting zoo.

Hey while we're at it, lets take the Fusion and call it a Probe! And you know the Fairmont was a great name, lets stick it on the next Mustang.
