Just heard and read that Fords' new B segment subcompact will be call "Verve".....interesting name. Not an "F" name nor a rehashed "old name". I just can't wait for the blogger butchers here to start calling it "Swerve" or "Vern". Will the name "Verve" make it to NA markets? I hope so.

Hurricanes are caused by nature, cruise control flares are caused by Ford.

Everybody correlates that. Flair/ Flare never gonna happen.

It's not about being useless puddy, it's just marketing.

At least I didn't suggest the name Degeneres, ;)

In that case I'm shocked Ford named their mainstream midsize car Fusion. After all, "everybody" associates fusion with nuclear weapons, nuclear weapons with America, America with Ford and Ford with cruise control fires. It's just one big, happy fiery family!

Realize many stupid, fat, complacent Americans aren't bright enough to learn how to return the shopping carts to the corrals instead of propping them against the curb or just plain leaving them in the spot next to your car!

Many Americans don't even know what nuclear fusion is, nevermind how it works.

(Personally I'd take fission reactors ;) )

who made the switch?

Texas Instruments, but who's name is on the product? Ford. In the end, they are culpable.

I DO wonder if any lawsuits have been brought against TI over this though. Haven't heard squat about that.

I'd say Ford should Rename Mercury to Edsel and make them even more exclusive them Jag or Bently

Edsel or Venus... Venus of course looking pretty favorable because we gotta keep Jill working selling to fashion concious women and gays...

Why? I have owned both Escort(s) and a Fiesta. While the Eighties US built and engineered Escort eventually became "accpetable" the German built Fiesta that featured one of Fords most reliable engine ever; the English built 1.6L "Kent" was far and away a better car. The Mazda engineered Escorts of the ninties on the other hand were very good and even the dreadful CVH became a decent and quite durable engine in 1.9 and 2.0L configurtions. So in essence the names may be moot in terms of preception - however a Fiesta is a Fiesta - and a Focus is the Escort class car.

I owned all of them at one time or another. Fairlane, Falcon, Fiesta, Festiva, Maverick, Comet (Vomit), Meteor ( a nephew's car actually), Capri, Cougar, Mustang, Crown Victoria (OOPS, that's not a small car), Marquis (totally too big), Taunus. I probably missed a couple.

The Fiesta is probably the most interesting of them all for driving and solidity. I miss that car. We now have two Escorts, and they are not nearly as satisfying to drive, nor as fun as the Fiesta. The Fairlane, Falcon, and Granada (just remembered that one), Capri and Mustang were rip snorters of a young man that I used to be. The Comet was a dog, but got me about. And the Taunus was but a prelude to the Mercedes that I bought next while in Germany. Neither was reliable.

What say I about a name? The little bugger should be a Fiesta. It has more good memories for reliability, fun and value. If no one in the target audience remembers it now, that is too bad. But, then they probably won't remember any of the others either will they? And a fun car can be a party car. That's what youth is about, isn't it? Good little car, inexpensive and fun to drive.

All we need is a widely available and used "dollar coin" like the Loonie. Every year we go fly-in fishing in Ontario and in Thunder Bay (ON), there is a SuperStore supermarket that has one cart corral. You have to put in a Loonie to get a shopping cart (it's the only way to obtain one). When you are done shopping, you have to put your s. cart back of the line and lock it it -- to get back your Loonie. Smart, and it takes into account human nature -- not a single s. cart anywhere except in that s. cart coral, that isn't being used by someone. It's (the corral) right in the middle of the parking lot.

The only problem is that it really is the only supermarket in town and their prices are very heavy - I can buy a prime rib-eye steak (per pound) here for what they charge for hamburger (per pound) there. I think that a lot of that has to do with the lack of competition. But I have to take my hat off to them for realizing human nature and utilizing it to take care of the s.cart problem.

I don't think anyone in the USA has a good memory about Escort.

Sorry, but i have had several escorts and tracers......never had a problem with any of them.

91 Escort LX bought new

93 Escort LX wagon bought new

93 Escort LX used

88 Mercury Tracer 188,00 when I bought it for $600 and had 315,000 on it when I sold it for $400 3 years later

95 Mercury Tracer Trio bought used at 130,000 miles sold it to my mom 2 years later for $1500 and she is still driving it with 240,000 miles. She has bumped it several times so it does need some body work but otherwise still looks good.

Hi from Australia! Here's some pictures of the Verve concept featured at the recent Frankfurt Auto Show:

And a 2008 Fiesta ST test car:

fiestast.jpg

Who knows whether the Verve name will live on, but it's pretty clear that the design will! Ford has said there is a possibility of it being built in China, but they are also expanding small car production lines in Thailand, so that's another option... Some other recent news is the announcement of a 'greatly expanded' range of turbo 4-cylinder cars, so maybe the Fiesta/Verve/Escort could be one of them?

The more of this thread I have read, the more I realize that many people here have NO idea about marketing and name recognition (Do you work Ford marketing?).

The first Civic, Accord, Corrola, and Sentra were ALL pieces of Crap! By your measure, nobody should buy them today because they were rustbuckets 30 years ago. What is important is that each of those cars are instantly recognizable as a Honda, Toyota or Nissan. Fiesta is okay, they were good cars. But if you want INSTANT, wide range recognition, the name is Escort hands down. It doesn't matter what 82-90 Escorts ran like, it only matters that the target audience recognize it as a Ford. The car will speak for itself in terms of reliability.

Just an OT FYI:

"Nova" is an old Latin (i.e. language of the Roman Empire) word that essentially means "big bright light where there used to be a star." The word stuck around as Latin turned into Italian, and migrated its way to English, still with the same meaning.

To the ancient Romans "Nova" just meant "New". Quoth the dictionary:

ORIGIN late 19th cent.: from Latin, feminine of novus ‘new’ (because such stars were thought to be newly formed).

Romans did not call them Novas. Tycho Brahe coined the term when he called a star he found a "Stella Nova", latin for New Star. Eventually, as the dictionary points out, the word Nova migrated to vernacular languages.

Porsche 911 are the favourites to win the rally but they are 2nd & 5th at the moment, but Bjorn Waldegård and Stig Blomqvist the two Mk1 Escorts, Ford are going to be no push over.

By the way, just for the record "Camry" is not a fake name...it means "Crown" in Japanese.

-And if you say, "but they could have just called it the crown then!" then I will say...why don't we have a Ford Bull? ;)

-As for "F" names, I like the F and E conventions except Ford should and will retain Taurus, Mustang, and Ranger.

-My favourite unused "F Names" are Fathom and Faction.

That's all super, but notice something about ALL the names you used as examples? Exactly. They were never discontinued and then brought back to life as a feel-good-remember-our-past namesake. They were all continuously improved generation after generation until they finally became the cars that they are today. Let this whole damn "name it Escort!" thing die already.

Call it Verve. End of discussion.

reviving names for cheap throw away economy cars is simply lame. Nobody has an emotional attachment to the name "escort". Id go with Verve since it illustrates a new beginning of sorts for Ford. I can see using Fiesta or whatever in other parts of the world since it was a continuous name if in fact this is going to replace that model. The US on the other hand needs new names just like it needs new ideas and an new identity.
