I think its too late for this topic since the Fiesta is the name of the new car. Personally Escort Should have been the name as most people that had Escorts especially the 81's to 1990. have fond memories of them.

my 89 Escort was bought brand new by my grandmother, went through 3 family members before i got to me and i ran it to 140,000 Miles. That car never left me stranded, got excellent fuel economy. Sold it for $1000.00 back in 98.

ROGER ALBERT RALLY 2008

Roger Albert Clark rally got underway this weekend Fords awesome CLASSIC Escorts lead the way as usual.

Rally report...

Wilson's In Charge...

Wilson's pace thrilled the thousands of fans who were out in the Yorkshire forests and then at Oliver's Mount to see the action.

McCormack bounced back from a couple of early offs to take second from the charging David Stokes (Escort Mk1) and Richard Lepley (Porsche 911). Out of the rally went Andrew Haddon's Porsche 911 with engine dramas in Langdale, while Jeremy Easson dropped a lot of time in Greystoke with ignition dramas on his Escort. Steve Perez in the awesome Ferrari powered Lancia Stratos is in 16th place.

ROGER ALBERT CLARK DAY 3

Sitting on the start line of the Newcastleton stage on Saturday evening (I think it's Saturday) and it's getting dark already - with hours of running still left. The hours of daylight seem so short it doesn't seem very long ago that the sun was coming up over Carlisle airport and now it's sunk again over the Scottish Borders.

The event continues and we've driven just over 600 miles since Elland Road on Friday...

Ford WRC Focus Team boss Malcolm Wilson still leads the rally in his Escort, rumours say "Six additional WRC attired mechanics turned up overnight to service Mr. Wilson's car, replacing everything that could be replaced..." With 2 Porsche 911's retired from rally things are looking good for the finish as the cars come back down from Scotland to England for the last day on Monday to finish the gruelling 4 day rally thats one of the toughest in the world.

More action the Escorts they are awesome

LOL Nick, l know you don't like Escorts a lot but then you never got the best Escorts in the US, the Mk1 & Mk2.

Gotta say l was wondering when it was going to end maybe if the Escort does come by December 31st 2009?

ROGER ALBERT CLARK 2008

Still the good ole Escort slaughtered the Porsche 911's Saabs and Ferrari powered Lancia's as usual to show just how potent those old Escorts were in their day. Best of all Fords WRC boss Malcolm Wilson won the rally in his Mk2 Escort. Maybe Ford should give him the ultimate Christmas present this year Sebastien Loeb as a Ford driver in 2009. It was nice to Land Rover and Renault sponsoring the RAC Rally.

OMG LOL now we are getting bots pluging escorts on here!

:hysterical: Too funny. I didn't even notice it the first time I browsed past this post. But, I think this bot post does highlight one of the reasons the name was dropped in favor of Focus.

Where did the Corgi Escort appear from?

You all ways know you made it big if Scalextric want to do your car.

Scalextric RWD Escorts are their most popular car at the moment, shame its FWD cars like the Mini are not very authentic they never built a RWD Mini.

These Escorts have all been released by Scalextric in the last year they are enjoying a sales boom and have 3 new RWD Escorts planned for 2009, what credit crunch?

That actually made me laugh. Sad isn't it.

Me too and yes, it is sad.

I would steer clear of the Escort name personally. I did have a good experience with an '85 but then my wife bought an '86 and that one was a POS. I've spoken to lots of people who feel "Escorts" were a real POS. I would hate to see a nice new little vehicle get a bad start due to connection to a poorly recognized name plate. I've already accepted the name Fiesta and feel that most others will as well. If the pictures I've seen of the Fiesta turn out to be the way it will actually look, a small to medium size advertising campaign along with plain old showing it off will generate plenty of buzz and sales. Its a good looking little car with some spunky performance to back it up in terms of MPG capability and decent performance for an economy car.

Ford scrapped the naming of vehicles with F, E, L, and M's a couple of years ago. So to keep debating it is useless

Escort was fun car that never suffered a sales credit crunch, unlike the boring dull appliance fridges that the Chryslers & GM's produce today that nobody wants to buy.

Hey whats NEW at Chysler/GM yet more boring dull fridges - Guess l won't upgrade to the latest dull and boring jellymould fridge l already have that, l will hang on to what l have got. Hey whats new from GM/Chrysler another plate load of boring jello with 4 wheels attached well worth getting into debt for.

Gotta say l never ever brought a car because l liked the name, l brought it because l liked the car, and the 3 Escorts l owned were all RWD and were great cars to own they were more about fun than wanting to be a boring & dull fridge.

20,000,000 Escorts were sold by Ford, it was the best ever selling nameplate ever fitted to Ford car, it never let Ford down and it employed a lot of people for a lot of years, it was one of the few cars that had booming sales in last big economic downturn of the early 70's fuel crisis..

20 Million folk loved the Escort, Fords best selling car of all time.

GM should change Hummer brand name to Xanadu they would sell 20 million units in next to no time - I don't think so :hysterical:

So did you guys copy that from Kia or is it the other way around? :stirpot:

When it was presented to the Ford chiefs in Dearborn in 2000, they stood to a man and applauded.

Kia actually copied it from us, it was a concept shown in the late 1990s on the falcon platform.

We've have a 4.0 turbo available in it that would make you sick with envy.

I guess I should do my part to keep this old thread going.

I don't care what they call it as long as they bring it to the US. Sadly the Fiesta is only coming to the US as a 4 and 5 door. WTF, what happened to those cool 2 doors concepts that they teased us with. I decided not to wait for the 2 door and bought an 09 Focus Coupe. I like the Focus, but would rather have the MPG's as I commute 100 miles a day.

BTW my experience with Escorts has been less than stellar. I have owned a 94 Escort Wagon, a 95 Tracer Wagon, a 95 Escort Wagon, and a 99 ZX2. The 94 went 150+ before the head cracked. The Tracer had to have the transmission rebuilt at 80k, It and the 95 wagon both lost timing belts at 64k and 86k respectively. Both 95's soldier on, the 99 had over 170k before a deer finished her off.

Non of these cars can hold a candle to my old 89 Mercury Tracer (Mazda 323 clone). She went 380k before a rusted front end forced her to be parked. The old 1.6l engine still runs great and never had any work done on her. It could hit over 40 mpg and only stranded me once when the alternator went out. I had hoped the Fiesta would replace this car, but I don't like 4 doors except on wagons, and SUV's.

Ford should have never changed the Escort name to Focus. Unlike the Pinto, the Escort was only suffering from a soft market and a restyle from a sharp hatchback to a dumpy looking sedan, and actually the first round of sedans weren't too bad. The Escort would have bounced right back with a good re-design and the change in customer tastes. Changing the name had absolutely zero to do with that. Throughout history, simply changing the name of a mediocre car never results in increased sales. That said, the Focus is now an established Ford nameplate and I don't think changing back would help, it would hurt. Anyone who remembers what a POS the early Hondas and Toyotas were (they would rust while you were washing them), can tell you that the name does not hurt the car today.

Having said all of that, the Fiesta is already established as Ford's subcom worldwide. They don't need to change the name just for the american market.

I am sorry but I have never liked the Fiesta name, of course this is just my opinion. I think its way to cheesy. but lets face it great nameplates of the past seem to only have relevance in ford fanatics and not with the actual ford company, the only sign of hope i see recently is the Ford Taurus SHO. at least they rememebred what a little sleeper hit it was. I would love to see Escort, Thunderbird and Cougar come back.

Ford's Escort was Fords best selling car of all time 20,000,000 million units no other Ford has been this popular it kept a lot of folk employed never had a sales problem suffered -30% sales drops every month.

First two Escorts were RWD and were the best Escorts had nearly a whole decade of RAC rally wins it is the world greatest rally car, and recently as last year got voted the worlds greatest rally car of all time beating 9 other AWD cars to the top spot. Ford's AWD WRC Focus RS made it to 10 position.

Escort Mk 2 was a bit of a heavenly car Pope John Paul II owned one and it sold for $690,000 at a auction in 2005.

Escort changed to FWD it was a pit of pussies car. In the 1980's at the time Ford dropped RWD for FWD to boost sales but ended up seeing its market share drop from 32% to 16% in the UK and its still around that number today.

diana.jpg

FWD Escorts were a bit of a girlie car which had royal blood running through its veins Diana Princess of Wales & Sarah Ferguson both owned one. Lady Di's Escort made £2 million (Nearly $4 million at the the time) at auction which must have made it one of the most valuable cars of all time.

LINK

US only ever got the FWD Escort and the the very last Escort MkV was one of the worse cars ever made, it was the first ever Ford to be designed by bean counters who cut things out here and cut things out there, if it had two inches of seat stuffing they wanted one inch, and thats why it ended up in a lot of books as the worst car ever made. So there is a message to Ford keep bean counters away from car design, but it was never as bad as your hot Pinto fireball but it was not far behind gotta say l'm glad we never got your Pinto in Europe :hysterical:

Still apart from the last model l gotta say the Escorts was one of the greatest Fords ever made, and 20 million buyers which made it Fords best selling of all time can't all be wrong, and Ford really does need something that will sell like Escort did in the past today lets hope the new Fiesta which is still outselling the Camry and has sold 12.5 million units might just break the Escorts record soon lets hope so.

Escort was a great name for Ford - 20 Million buyers said yes is was (30,000 hits on this thread alone).
