New Ford Mondeo named Car of the Year

"The new Mondeo is Ford's finest ever car," said Auto Express editor in chief, David Johns. "Each and every model, whether hatchback, saloon or estate, has been designed and engineered to the highest standards. The car oozes quality, especially in the cabin which has levels of equipment and comfort which sets new standards for the class."

Chances of reading that in a Fusion review?

ZERO.

Complacent Ford NA was too proud receiving the EASIEST CAR TO WASH award for the Fusion in its first year.

Why is the Fusion looked down on? There's no good reason other than the idea that people think European cars have a leg up on NA cars. It's doing well for Ford, and people love it. Customer satisfaction levels are very high.

People who hail the European Ford as everything Ford NA should be are incorrect. They are similar in some respects, but ultimately they are NOT identical markets. The Mondeo, while a very good car for the European market, doesn't have everything it would need to compete here. Rest assured, if it came here, it would be lambasted for a lack of power. It doesn't have power levels competitive with cars in its class here. Its styling would also be lambasted, despite what the press says. Like it or not, the Mondeo doesn't stand out like the Fusion does. The Fusion is in your face, and the Mondeo is just there.

There are a number of other things that I can't mention right now because I need to take my mom to a doctor's appointment now, but the whole "Mondeo on a pedestal" attitude is rather annoying and would be a step backwards for Ford. The Mondeo and Fusion both have good things going for them. That is why Ford will work to unify their development. In other words: both cars have good and bad things about them, they'll hopefully capitalize on the best of both cars.

Another one of those "File Under: Moot Point" threads.

Everybody on here by now knows that the next generation Mondeo and Fusion will share identical architecture. What's the point about pissing and moaning about water under the bridge? Ford admits they could have done better and will be correcting it with the next redesign. Maybe we should whine some more about the Edge's brakes too while we're at it. It would accomplish just as much.

All that said, as "poor" as people often claim the Fusion is, it has at least put Ford back into the midsize market with a competitive entry.

"Bububububu"-boy is on a tear today. Must've found out that dropping out of a different orifice than the other kids doesn't actually make him special. Smelly, yes.

With all the good press and awards the Fusion has garnered, the whole "Easiest car to wash" crap-fest is especially moronic.

pscario...we get it...you're too stupid to post here, or in fact anywhere. Cancel your internet subscription, and get back to your sipper cups and your crayons.

HUH? Fusion was nominated for the North American Car of the Year - a MUCH more important award, than some magazine calling the car "best" 7 months into a year .. Laguna and Vectra are still to debut this year...

regardless ...

I like the Fusion, I have one, but I've always thought the Fusion's styling was based of the last gen Mondeo's.

Notice the dash design and door panel design. Basically the same.

Same character lines and creases in the extact same places.

That, at 2 years post Fusion, engineered on a 2nd generation 'modern' platform, it dang well ought to be best in class.

However, it's not so much better that it should be imported and 1) sold at a loss, 2) sold at an egregious markup or 3) sold in place of the Fusion.

Furthermore, the Fusion's quality awards seem unlikely to be given to the Mondeo, given the relative performance of Ford NA & Ford Europe on the JD Power IQS. Praise FoE to heaven if you must, but it appears in initial quality that they lag the 'mediocre' lineup of Ford NA.

C-Pillar is less the same than the rest of the car...

I notice far more similarities elsewhere (Fusion doesn't have quite the separation between C pillar and decklid that the Mondeo has)

Ford designers have never outright admitted (on the record, at least) that the Fusion was intended to look like the Mondeo.

However, they have admitted that the front end of the Fusion was changed after the 427 concept car came out.

Judging by the Five Hundred and Focus of that period, as well as the obvious similarities to the Mondeo elsewhere, it seems pretty clear that the face scrubbed from the Fusion launch was the last generation Mondeo's.

----

See, all these people that want Ford to have a 'global' design language forget that the Five Hundred and Focus have European faces grafted onto them, and they are generally judged 'bland' or, at best, 'inoffensive'.

This global design language? We've already been there. We were there three years ago. Thank heavens we weren't there with the Fusion.

Your proof that Ford NA should have a substantial degree of freedom in designing cars for its market is right there in steel and plastic: A Fusion with a C220 Mondeo face? No thanks!

There's no reason why Ford NA should be subject to the whims of a design center in London.

And vice versa (although, thanks to the thoroughly short memories of many proponents of the 'Ford Europe can do know wrong' theory, it doesn't seem like Ford Europe would ever have the weaker product offering -- cough cough Sierra-Scorpio-Escort antique collection -- cough cough )

The biggest similarity between the interiors that I noticed was the door panel, almost exactly the same.

No, sounded like you had experience in that area..

Why do you all have to argue so much? It was arguments like these (although worse) that shut down the Autoweek Combustion Chamber. I'd hate to see BOF shut down (I don't know if it would happen) because of meaningless arguments.

This is in no way a personal offense to anyone if it sounded like one.

You are misleading and posting mis-imformation as much as l like it.

Auto Express awarded the Ford Mondeo best family class "USED" car of the year 2007, this had more to do with the fact that it loose 75% of its value within 2 years, its a dream car to drive its not hard to see why it won the award.

AUTO EXPRESS REPORT

BEST "USED" CAR 2007

James Bond’s smart when it comes to card games, but he clearly doesn’t know the first thing about depreciation! The nation’s favourite spy gave the all-new Ford Mondeo its world debut in the recent Casino Royale blockbuster. Yet if you want to avoid the dreaded D-word, the smart money is on a used example of the current model.

No matter how hard they tried, our panel of judges couldn’t look beyond last year’s trio: the Mondeo, Mazda 6 and Vectra, and the phenomenal value offered by the outgoing blue oval vehicle ensured it held all the aces.

Mike Brewer was the big Ford’s keenest fan. “You can buy a 65,000-mile 54-plate 2.0 TDCi for only £5,000.

were you ever fired by ford?

No its simple, l just loved the old CLASSIC design of old Fords when they used post big billion dollar profits every year, l don't like boring bland cars like the Mondeo don't sell well, only do well second hand. I just hate seeing Ford in the sad state they are in at the moment it pisses me off big time.
