Why the drop in Expediton sales?

And, twinforce or turbo I4 on the Mustang...no thanks... Thats a Probe all over for me...

Expedition was brand new last year - a lot of people waiting for it .. it was just a high month .. by spring we should see stable numbers again as the initial rush to get the new wxpy was over by that time last year

(didn't the Expy go up like 40% last year after the launch?)

The Edge sold over 14,000 this past month...that is pretty good. Didn't someone say about a year ago...she is gonna bomb???

Mercury is up 25% am I reading that right? I guess they do have a fairly fresh line-up and I assume they are getting a thousand or so CV customers trickling in since you can't buy a CV retail anymore.

This month's press release provided enough info to determine exactly the number of "rental fleet" sales for both years.

2006 31,578 (of course, 20,000 of these were old Taurus)

2007 19,578

You take out the rental fleet numbers it leaves with a 4.6% drop in sales of retail and govt/commercial fleet sales. Pipas says that retail dropped 1% so that means govt./commercial dropped considerably more than that. This makes sense since a large share of the commercial fleet sales would be in the construction industry. This is relatively positive news.

The downside is the fact that fleet sales for all the current models increased by about 8,000 units over last year. The sales numbers suggest that Mercury may have dumped some Milans, and a few Sables. Fusion and Focus probably dumped some units as well. Especially considering the pattern that Ford has followed thus far this year in which they dump a large amount of the new models in rental fleets the first month out of the chute. (i.e. Edge, New Taurus) I would imagine that the Focus was an above average fleet month. So to get a true picture of the demand for the New Focus next month's numbers should be more indicative since they should have decent dealer stock and hopefully they aren't still filling the rental fleet chanels. The end result is that these extra 8,000 units will diminish residuals but at the same time help with excess inventory that may have existed on whichever models were dumped.

Had Ford not pushed out the extra 8,000 units their overall sales would have been down 13.2%. Which is still less than the analysts had predicted.

Money does matter, but would you rather have a lot of sales of a car that you really don't care about, or a lot of sales of a car that you really care about?

WTF are you smoking? I think Ford can give less then two shits about what you think of the Panther if they aren't making money on them. Ford is in business to make money...not suck up to people who buy cars second hand.

Well I wouldn't have high expectations either with the way the American Economy is going...I'll predict that Ford will be flat or lose about 5% of sales month to month.

STOP IT!!!!! The media has people so worked up over this "bad economy" that panic is going to end up leading to an actual problem. As it stands right now, if people actually look at the hard numbers, the economy is buzzing along pretty well.

Yes, supposedly it was going to bomb according to some. But it doesn't matter, because even if the vehicle did surpass initial sales expectation, in their mind it bombs because Hmm, it didn't surpass it by 10%, or 20%, or sell upwards of 400K units. So sometimes for them, it's just never enough...

I'd rather sell profitable cars people want to buy new. You panther idiots need to be banned from this forum.

Dumbass:

Let me put it this way,

The comment was made that even though the Sable sold half or so of the GM in October, it probably made more money.

My comment was that Ford would rather see sales of the Sable...a car that they damn well better care about...than double that number in GM sales.

YOu people need to slow and read. Use your finger if you can't keep up.

On the 4 cylinder mustang, lets embrace this idea just a little bit.

The current base engine is an iron block, aluminum head OHC 4.0L v6 that is rated at ~240 lbs of torque and 215 hp.

The upcoming 2.5L I-4 will be rated at around 165-170 lbs of torque and 170 hp.

It will also weigh roughly half of what the 4.0L cologne V6 weighs, if that much.

If Ford were to develop a direct gasoline injection version of the 2.5L I-4, which is more than likely, it will produce around 185-190 lbs of torque with similar HP. I suggest that said engine will make a fine base engine for the mustang as the whole vehicle will weigh at least 100 lbs less than the V6 version and the city and highway fuel economy numbers will likely increase by at least 15-20%. Also, when you consider that the D35, which will be the V6 in the mustang in a few years, will be producing around 260 hp and 250 lbs of torque at that time will give substantially better performance than the existing 4.0L v6 while giving better fuel efficiency and weighing less, there will definitely be room for an entry level 4 banger in the lineup.

This will also help with the idea of continuing to make a base mustang available to the masses for under $20K. A 4 banger mustang would accomplish just that.

The end result is that these extra 8,000 units will diminish residuals

It's kind of interesting, Ford is now mandating that rental companies purchase vehicles with more desirable options. Rental companies are now required to buy vehicles with leather, sunroofs, and so forth. Otherwise, they don't get Ford's guaranteed repurchase. This helps offset impact on vehicle residuals as more of the vehicles coming in off the rental car lots have desirable features and higher prices.

Wouldn't the Focus coupe basically be the spiritual successor to the ZX2? It's not like the ZX2 was anything more than an Escort coupe.

They're both coupe versions of the compact offering but if I remember correctly the ZX2 was marketed as a sports coupe and sold well enough in that capacity that Ford didn't rebadge the Cougar as the next Probe.
