rmc523 Posted January 4, 2008 Share Posted January 4, 2008 Guess your not that old...if you look at Ford in the 1980's they had 'frog" nose on most of the car...no grill with a blue oval in the middle of it...the 1986 Taurus is the best example of this. Then look at the 1990's...the Contour, Escort and Taurus all shared the free floating blue oval grill The problem is that after 2000, Ford didn't have any real design direction till the Fusion came out, thus why we are seeing the Razor grill on everything. Lets not even get started on BMW or Pontiac...all their cars share the same grill design. Its all about brand recognition I think at the moment, BMW pulls off the corporate grille the best. IIRC, I read an article somewhere saying they're having trouble unloading them now that initial demand has been filled. So, based on that fact, how do you think a 2 seat Ford roadster would do in the long run? IMO, not too well as a consistent seller, at least not as well as a Flex could do. With Flex, you know that there's always going to be somebody who will need that vehicle a vehicle you can pile tons of stuff, people, whatever into, while still being fuel efficient and stylish (yes, I like it). With a small roadster, there's not necessarily always going to be a market for that type of vehicle, I know you're going to argue about the Miata, but that is an established, proven model that has it's own following already. So your basis is the performance of vehicles that cost 1/2 to 2/3rds of the price of the Flex, which do not seat 6 or 7 passengers, and which, in the instance of the Scion, is aimed at the children of the Flex' target audience. Wow. Somebody needs to put you in charge of market research. That market analysis is completely unassailable. Except, of course, the part where you said why the Flex wouldn't sell. Ford should really just do the Honda/Chrysler/Toyota thing and pretend that you can make a great big box look like something other than a great big box. Oh wait, minivan sales are falling? What? How can that be? They don't look like Scion xBs, but can haul 7 people; by the "Scion xB is a fad" line of reasoning, people that need to haul 6 other people should be lining up to buy a vehicle that can haul 7 people and which doesn't look like a Scion xB. After all your choices are pretty much dust buster or Scion xB. Since the Scion xB look is -so played- then the dust buster look should still be going strong. But it isn't is it? Seems to me that boxy station wagons have been selling in the millions for several years. You just slap on a cutesy marketing name like SUV and they become palatable. After all, isn't that what an SUV is? Now that SUVs are making way for CUVs, lets call those station wagons by that name. ASfter all, isn't that what CUVs are? And the boxy look is just a different approach. Maybe some are sick of jelly beans. No the Flex won't be a million unit vehicle, but 100k units may be quite reasonable. Cavernous interior.
