How the Flex will be a success

America gets the Edge. It doesn't have the S-Max's useless +2 3rd row seating, and Americans like it just fine.

Has dual exhaust too.

Not that this matters much. True dual exhausts on a 4-cylinder would be worse than useless, as they would hamper the partial vacuum which improves the efficiency of a 4-cylinder engine (reason #3 for the flat-plane crank on the DFV, and the reason why Ford's GT40 V8 exhausts were so convoluted, and why on the Ford Indy V8 they exited from the crankshaft valley).

Of course, you knew all that about how dual exhausts after the muffler are pretty much just for show, and how dual exhausts are counter productive on a 4-cylinder, right?

So, if Mazda wanted the CX-7 to be more fuel efficient, it'd be better for them to remove the dual exhaust?

Because it's not a dual exhaust as in twin cat-cons and two exhaust manifolds, it doesn't matter.

What would help the CX-7 is an engine that doesn't have to run at 3000RPM on the highway.

However, since the CX-7 is allegedly a dogs-breakfast combination of C1 in the front and outgoing Mazda6 components, it apparently can't fit a 6 cylinder.

Ford S-MAX Interior dimensions:

Front (mm)

Maximum effective legroom (rearmost normal) 42.8"

2nd row (mm)

Minimum effective legroom (nominal) 39"

3rd row (mm)

Minimum effective legroom (nominal) 28"

Ford Territory Interior dimensions:

Front (mm)

Maximum effective legroom (rearmost normal) 44.1"

2nd row (mm)

Minimum effective legroom (nominal) 41"

3rd row (mm)

Minimum effective legroom (nominal) 33.5" - similar to Mustang Rear seating

So obviously, the S-Max's 3rd row is for little kids.

May I ask why you listed Territory dimensions?

Most of these crossovers and stuff dont have dual exhaust. Does the Edge even have true dual exhaust?

No. True dual exhaust at the under $40k mark is pretty much limited to these cars:

The Mustang GT

P71's daily driver (Police Interceptor)

Chrysler 300C

Dodge Magnum R/T

Dodge Charger R/T

And, in fact, I cannot even begin to tell you if what trucks--if any--come with a true dual exhaust.

I didn't think the Edge had it.

What I want to know is why the heck do they have to drive the freaking grill on every one of their damn vehicles.

I get so sick of having everything have the same basic look.

The 3 bar grill would have looked just fine on just a Fusion / Taurus....

Who in the Hell is in charge of the design...

The Expedition has to look like the F150, oh wait, lets give the Ranger and Explorer the same look too..

The Super Duty had a look of it's own.. It didn't have to look like an F150 and it was a success.....

They can't share the damn grills and headlights by making them resemble each other so by gawd give it a different look and attract other people that don't like the flavor of the next 10 years.....

Jeeeehz...

Well, that grille seems to be getting the attention of customers. If you didn't notice, most of the vehicles w/ the new grille have increasing sales year to year.

If you don't get that a crossover has more appeal than a minivan in NA, then you need to go sit in the corner and think about what you've said.

OK I see, I didn't realise that's what you call a crossover in the USA. To me it just looks like an Ugly MINI, but don't get me wrong maybe it looks really great to people in the USA I just don't get it that's all...

Guess your not that old...if you look at Ford in the 1980's they had 'frog" nose on most of the car...no grill with a blue oval in the middle of it...the 1986 Taurus is the best example of this.

Then look at the 1990's...the Contour, Escort and Taurus all shared the free floating blue oval grill

The problem is that after 2000, Ford didn't have any real design direction till the Fusion came out, thus why we are seeing the Razor grill on everything.

Lets not even get started on BMW or Pontiac...all their cars share the same grill design.

Its all about brand recognition

To tell you the truth, I'm not that fond of the look. Many people are though, and I would still take it over a van shaped thing.

Bedford :)

I really can't say how Ford will fair with this in the USA, I just think that maybe it's too big a gamble when Ford could have played it safe by simply being a bit more conventional. Put it this way could anything better have got build instead? An Mx5 beater or a US C-max for example?

As in a Mazda Miata? Sure. Ford could sell 25k roadsters from April to October at $25k a pop, or they could sell 80-100k Flexes from January to December for about $32k a pop. You do the math....

And to the C-Max question, we already have it, it's called the Escape, and it sells pretty well, thank you very much.

So...you chose optimism over being realistic eh?

80k = 6,667 per month, a figure that the Freestyle got close to its first year on a few different occasions, despite barely raising the pulse of anybody in the market for such a vehicle.

Unlike yourself, I don't believe that my tastes in cars represent the public at large. Nor do I believe that the people who I hang out with represent the buying public at large.

This thing is going to have a pretty substantial -pop- the first year or two, and then should settle into a nice life as long as this particular class of vehicle is popular.

The "Box on wheels" fad started...and ended with the Scion xB.
